You generally can’t promote a secondary user to administrator on a Samsung Galaxy tablet. To give someone else primary control, back up the tablet, factory reset it, then set it up with the new owner’s account. If they only need their own space on a shared tablet, add a separate user profile instead.
Choose between adding a user and changing the primary owner
Samsung distinguishes the tablet’s original Admin profile from the Samsung or Google accounts signed in on it. The Admin profile manages user profiles; removing an account from the device does not transfer that role. Samsung says, “The original Admin profile cannot be removed unless the tablet is reset.” Samsung’s Galaxy tablet user guide documents adding and switching profiles, but not promoting one to replace the original Admin.

Add a separate user profile
Use this option when the tablet will remain shared and the other person does not need to become its primary administrator. On supported models, Samsung’s US guide gives this path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accounts and backup, then Users.
- Tap Add user or profile, choose User, and follow the prompts to set up the profile.
To switch users, select a profile under Settings > Accounts and backup > Users, or use the user icon in Quick Settings if available. Samsung says you can return to the original Admin profile by restarting the tablet or choosing it from the User profile option in Quick Settings. Menu names and available options vary by model, software version, and, as Samsung notes, carrier.

Transfer primary control with a factory reset
If the recipient needs full control over user management, Samsung’s documented route is to reset the tablet and complete its initial setup with the recipient’s account. A reset is not a selective administrator change: Samsung warns that it removes personal data stored on the device. Back up photos, videos, documents, and anything else the current owner wants to keep before proceeding.
- Back up the data you need and make sure you can access the accounts associated with the tablet.
- Open Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset. Labels may differ on some tablets.
- Review the reset information. Confirm only when you are ready to erase the tablet.
- When the tablet restarts at initial setup, have the recipient set it up with their own account.
Samsung notes that the Samsung account password may be required to complete a reset. Check that the current owner can sign in before starting. Samsung’s reset guidance covers the reset process and account-verification protections.

Understand account removal and reset protection
Removing an account is not an administrator transfer
You can remove a Samsung or Google account from the device separately: open Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts, select the account, and choose Remove account. Samsung says removing a Samsung account from the tablet does not permanently delete the account. More importantly, account removal alone does not remove the original Admin profile. See Samsung’s account-removal instructions.
Be prepared for Google account verification
After a reset, Factory Reset Protection (FRP) may require verification with a Google account previously registered on the tablet. Samsung says this can happen when a reset is performed by a method other than Factory data reset in Settings. On Android 9 and later, the previously configured screen lock may also be offered as an ownership-verification method. Do not try to bypass FRP. If the legitimate owner cannot complete verification or setup, Samsung directs them to contact Samsung support or service.

If the menu or setup does not match
- You cannot find Users: The setting can vary by tablet model and software version, and carrier differences may affect availability. Check Samsung’s user-profile guide for the applicable options.
- You only removed the previous owner’s account: That does not replace the Admin profile. Use the factory-reset and new-device setup process for a primary-control handoff.
- Setup asks for an account or screen lock you do not know: Do not attempt to bypass the verification. Contact Samsung support or service with proof of ownership if needed.
