How to Change Storage to an SD Card on a Samsung Tablet

A Samsung tablet’s microSD card can store files, some eligible apps, and sometimes Camera media. Here’s where to find each option and what it can’t do.

You can move files and some eligible apps to a microSD card on a compatible Samsung tablet, and some Camera apps let you save new photos and videos there. You cannot make the card universal internal storage: Samsung says its Android devices do not support Adoptable storage. The available options depend on your tablet model and software version.

Check whether your Samsung tablet supports a microSD card

Not every Samsung tablet has a microSD card slot. Check the specifications for your exact model before buying a card. After inserting one, look in Settings or My Files to confirm that the tablet recognizes it. Samsung notes that settings can vary by device, carrier, and software version. Move or copy files with My Files

  1. Open My Files and find the files or folders you want to transfer.
  2. Touch and hold an item to select it. Select additional items if needed.
  3. Tap Move or Copy. Choose Move to relocate the selected items; choose Copy to keep the originals as well.
  4. Return to the storage locations, select SD card, and open the destination folder.
  5. Tap Move here or Copy here, as applicable.

Keep the card inserted while you use files stored on it. Verify that the transferred files appear in the destination before deleting any separate originals or removing the card. For Samsung’s instructions, see using an SD card.

Move an app only if its Storage screen offers the option

  1. Open Settings > Apps and select the app.
  2. Tap Storage. If Change appears, tap it, select SD card, then tap Move and follow any prompts.

If Change is missing, Samsung’s guidance says that app cannot be moved by this method. Many apps are not eligible, including some preloaded apps, and some app data may remain in internal storage. See Samsung Support’s app and SD-card guidance and Galaxy tablet storage instructions.

Save Camera photos and videos to the card when available

Open the Camera app’s settings and look for Storage location; on some versions, you can select SD card. This setting changes where that Camera app saves its photos and videos. It does not redirect every app’s downloads or change the tablet’s overall storage destination. The option and its location vary by model and software. Samsung Community discusses this app-specific setting at this Samsung Community answer.

What “change storage” can—and cannot—mean

A microSD card can serve as removable storage for files, eligible apps, and, where supported, Camera media. It does not replace the tablet’s built-in storage or create one universal default for all content. Samsung states, “Samsung Android devices do not support the Adoptable storage feature.” Samsung Support.
