How to Change Scrollbar Size in Windows 11 (Easy Steps)

Windows 11 has no documented scrollbar-thickness setting. Here is what the Always show scrollbars toggle does, what text size and display scale change, and how to show scrollbars in Word or Excel.

Windows 11 has no documented setting that changes how thick a scrollbar is. The closest built-in control is Always show scrollbars, which decides whether Windows hides scrollbars automatically or keeps them visible. It makes scrollbars easier to notice, but it does not make them wider or narrower. If you want a bigger, easier-to-see interface overall, the supported options are text size and display scale, which enlarge content in general rather than the scrollbar alone.

Why visibility is not the same as size

Microsoft’s Windows 11 accessibility guidance describes the scrollbar control as a visibility toggle. Turning it on keeps scrollbars displayed; turning it off lets Windows hide them until you move the pointer or scroll. Neither state changes the bar’s thickness, so a reader who wants a physically wider scrollbar will not find that option in this setting.

Keep scrollbars visible in Windows 11

  1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Accessibility.
  3. Select Visual effects.
  4. Turn on Always show scrollbars to keep them displayed. To let Windows hide them automatically, turn it off.

Microsoft’s support article for this setting is Make it easier to focus on tasks. It says: “To automatically hide the scrollbars in Windows, turn off the Always show scrollbars toggle.”

Options that make the interface larger

If the bar is hard to see because everything on screen is small, the relevant controls are general size settings. Microsoft’s guidance on making text and apps bigger covers two of them:

Control What it changes Affects scrollbar thickness?
Always show scrollbars (Visual effects) Whether Windows hides scrollbars automatically Not stated; the documented effect is visibility only
Text size (Accessibility) Enlarges text on screen Not stated as a scrollbar control
Display scale (System > Display) Enlarges displayed content, including images and apps Not stated as a scrollbar control; it scales everything proportionally

Display scale is the broader change. It enlarges the whole screen, so a scrollbar may look larger as part of that, but Microsoft does not describe it as a way to resize scrollbars specifically.

Scrollbars missing only in Word or Excel

If the scrollbar is absent only inside Microsoft Word or Excel, the setting lives in the app. Microsoft’s guidance on showing scroll bars in Word or Excel describes this path:

Troubleshooting: what to try when the bar is still hard to see

  • Scrollbars keep disappearing: check that Always show scrollbars is on under Accessibility > Visual effects.
  • Bars are missing only in one app: check that app’s own display options, as in the Word and Excel steps above.
  • Everything is too small to read: raise text size or display scale rather than looking for a scrollbar slider.
  • You need a physically thicker bar: the Microsoft pages reviewed for this guide do not document a built-in way to do that, so there is no supported Windows 11 setting to follow.

Which option matches your goal

  • To make scrollbars stay visible: use Always show scrollbars.
  • To make everything on screen larger, including the scrollbar: use display scale or text size.
  • To show scrollbars in Word or Excel: use the app’s File > Options > Advanced > Display settings.
