If customization is the priority, the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 offers far more physical adjustment and button remapping than the standard Xbox Wireless Controller. The standard controller still lets you change its look and remap buttons on supported systems, and it costs less to start. Which one is “best” depends on whether you will actually use the Elite’s extra adjustments and paddles.
This comparison covers the two controllers Xbox sells for Xbox Series X|S. It is based on Xbox’s official product and Design Lab pages, accessed October 7, 2026. Those pages describe features and specifications; they are not independent hands-on tests, so the performance claims below are Xbox’s own.

Which controller suits a customization-focused player
Choose the Elite Series 2 if you want to change how the controller physically feels and responds, or if you plan to set up several button layouts. Choose the standard controller if you mainly want a personalized look, a hybrid D-pad, and basic button mapping at a lower entry price. Extra customization does not automatically improve play for everyone; a player who never touches the paddles or thumbstick tension settings gets little from the Elite’s added hardware.

Battery: AA batteries or a built-in battery
The standard controller runs on AA batteries, so you can keep spares and swap them in seconds. The Elite Series 2 uses an internal rechargeable battery, which means no battery purchases but a charging routine. Xbox’s battery estimates are manufacturer figures. For the standard controller, Xbox says Microsoft tested the estimate with standard AA batteries on preproduction units, and that real life varies with headsets, accessories, and usage. The Elite page gives the same kind of caveat for usage. Plan around your own sessions rather than the headline number.

Device and connection support
Connection options depend on what you play on, so confirm your setup before buying.
- Elite Series 2: Xbox says it pairs with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles, Windows PCs, and selected mobile devices over Xbox Wireless, Bluetooth, or the included USB-C cable.
- Elite Series 2 on older Windows versions: Windows 7 and 8.1 require the included cable and do not support some functionality.
- Standard controller on Windows 10 and 11: Xbox lists Bluetooth, a compatible USB-C cable, or an Xbox Wireless Adapter. Xbox notes that some of these items are sold separately.
- Standard controller on mobile: Xbox lists Android and iOS support with select-device and operating-system caveats.
- Headsets: Both controllers have a 3.5 mm stereo headset jack, as listed on Xbox’s pages.
Price and configuration
Xbox’s Canada Design Lab page for the Elite Series 2 shows a starting ERP of CAD $209.99 at the time of access. That is a regional starting figure, not a US retail price, and custom additions change the total. The consulted sources do not provide a like-for-like US price comparison between the two controllers, so check current listings for the exact color, components, and accessories you want before comparing.
Checklist before you buy
- List the controls you will adjust: thumbsticks, triggers, D-pad, paddles, or only button layout.
- Confirm your platform: Xbox Series X|S, Windows version, or Android or iOS device.
- Decide how you will connect: Xbox Wireless, Bluetooth, or USB-C cable, and whether you need an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows 10 or 11.
- Choose a power approach: AA batteries with spares, or an internal battery you recharge.
- Check the included contents and configuration on the product page for the exact model you are buying.
If your checklist shows you will use the paddles and adjustable thumbsticks, the Elite Series 2 is the stronger customization choice. If you want a personalized controller with simple mapping at a lower entry point, the standard Xbox Wireless Controller covers that need.
