The controls depend on the device, app, or account—and on what you want to change, such as location access, activity history, tracking prompts, or who can see your posts. Start with the relevant path below, then change only the control for the data or behavior you mean.
Find the right privacy control
First identify the scope of the setting: a device permission affects access on that device; an account control affects data saved to that service; and an app setting applies within that app. These controls are not interchangeable. For example, changing Android app permissions does not pause activity saved to a Google Account.

- Location, camera, contacts, or similar access: check the device’s privacy settings or the app’s own settings.
- Cross-app tracking requests: check the device’s tracking controls.
- Search, video, or location history saved to an account: check that account’s activity controls.
- Who can see posts or profile details: check the social service’s audience and visibility controls.
Change privacy settings on common platforms
iPhone
For app access to information such as Calendars, Reminders, and Motion & Fitness, open Settings > Privacy & Security, choose a category, and change access for the listed apps. Apple’s instructions are at iPhone: Control access to information in apps.
For cross-app and cross-site tracking permissions, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. You can change permissions for individual apps or turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track so apps cannot ask for that permission. This setting does not turn off every form of tracking or data collection. See Apple’s tracking controls guide.

Android
On Android 13 and later, privacy controls are generally under Settings > Security and privacy. On Android 12 and earlier, look for separate Security and Privacy destinations. Menu names and organization vary by device, and not all devices combine these sections. Google explains the variations in its Android security and privacy settings guide.
Windows
In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Privacy & security, choose a capability such as Location, Camera, Contacts, or Calendar, and adjust broad or app-specific access. Microsoft’s instructions are in Manage app permissions in Windows.

These capability controls mostly apply to Microsoft Store apps. Desktop apps may not appear in the lists, so check the desktop app’s own settings as well. Google Account
To change what is saved to a Google Account, review Privacy Checkup and History Settings. History Settings can pause specific activity types, including Search and browsing activity, YouTube History, and Location History. My Activity lets you find and delete saved activity. These are account-level controls, separate from permissions for apps installed on an Android device. Start at Google Safety Center.

Facebook’s privacy controls are under Settings & privacy > Audience and visibility. From there, review options for profile details, how people find and contact you, posts, Stories, followers and public content, profile and tagging, and blocking. Some choices vary by profile type. - Name the data or behavior. Decide whether you mean location, camera or contact access, tracking permission requests, account activity history, or profile visibility.
- Open the settings for the right scope. Use device settings for device permissions, the service’s account controls for saved history, or the social app’s audience controls for visibility.
- Change the specific category or app. Deny access, pause a history type, or adjust the audience as appropriate; do not assume a single toggle covers other categories.
- Check app-level settings if needed. Some apps have their own controls, and Windows desktop apps may not be represented in the system permission lists.
If you need exact taps, identify your device or service, its version if known, and the specific behavior you want to stop. Privacy controls vary by platform and configuration; changing them does not by itself establish that all data collection or tracking has stopped.
