How to Change Privacy and App Settings on an Amazon Fire Tablet

A version-aware guide to Fire tablet privacy and app controls, including usage data, Advertising ID, location, Alexa, cache and storage, app removal, recommendations, and child profiles.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exact menu names on a Fire tablet depend on its generation and Fire OS version. Start by checking those details, then open Settings by swiping down from the top of the screen and tapping the gear. The controls below let you limit specific kinds of data use, advertising, location access, Alexa recording, recommendations, and app storage—but no single switch stops every kind of processing or every advertisement.

Amazon’s privacy choices are saved per profile and per device. Repeat the review for every profile and tablet you use, and remember that Amazon services and third-party apps can have their own privacy settings.

Check your Fire tablet’s generation, Fire OS version, and profile first

Amazon publishes different routes for different software releases. For example, its cache and storage instructions apply to Fire tablets from the 8th generation onward, while its uninstall instructions apply to Fire OS 7 and later. Amazon’s advertising settings also appear in more than one location in its support documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a path below is missing, open Settings and use the search field if your tablet provides one. Otherwise, check Amazon’s current Fire Tablet Help index for your model. Perform the review while signed in to the profile whose settings you want to change.

  • Ready when inspiration strikes — With 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, the Made for Amazon Stylus Pen (sold separately) offers a natural writing experience that responds to your handwriting. Use it to write, sketch in apps like OneNote, and more.

Amazon says privacy preferences are per profile and per device; a change on one Amazon device does not automatically copy to another. On some tablets, account-level choices are also available at Manage Your Content and Devices > Privacy Settings > Amazon Devices Privacy.

What each privacy control actually changes

Control Where it applies What changing it does What it does not promise
Device Usage Data Fire tablet device and current profile Opts out of processing device-usage data for marketing and product-improvement purposes. It does not necessarily stop processing needed for device features such as syncing, backups, or Special Offers; it does not guarantee fewer marketing offers; it does not govern other data used for interest-based advertising or processing tied to services such as Prime Video.
Collect App Usage Data Third-party apps on the tablet Controls collection about when third-party apps open, close, and how long they are used. It is not the same as an app permission, and it does not control data collected by an app’s own service.
Interest-based Ads Apps that use the tablet’s Advertising ID Tells those apps not to use the Advertising ID to build profiles or show interest-based ads. It does not remove every advertisement or remove paid Special Offers from the lock screen.
Location-Based Services Whole device or selected apps, where the tablet offers the choice Stops or limits use of estimated location and related information by maps, apps, and Amazon. An individual app or service may have additional location controls in its own settings or privacy notice.
Alexa Hands-Free Mode Compatible Fire tablets Turns off hands-free wake-word listening on the tablet. It does not replace the privacy controls of Alexa services or other apps.

Turn off device usage data

Amazon’s Fire tablet privacy FAQ documents this route:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Security & Privacy.
  3. Tap Device Usage Data.
  4. Turn the setting off and confirm any prompt.

This opt-out concerns processing of device-usage data for marketing and product-improvement purposes. Amazon cautions that some processing can continue when it is required for device features, including syncing and backups. The switch also does not necessarily change Special Offers, guarantee fewer marketing offers, control other data used for interest-based advertising, or stop data processing connected with an Amazon service such as Prime Video. See Amazon’s Privacy Settings FAQs for Fire TV Products, Fire Tablets and Kindle E-readers for the documented scope.

Stop collection of third-party app usage data

This setting is separate from app permissions. It concerns basic use patterns for third-party apps, such as opening, closing, and duration of use.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps & Games.
  3. Tap Collect App Usage Data.
  4. Turn the collection setting off.

Turning this off does not tell an individual app to stop all collection. Review the app’s own account, privacy, and diagnostics controls as well. Amazon documents this control in the same privacy FAQ.

Turn off interest-based ads and reset the Advertising ID

Amazon documents the shared control in two locations, which is a sign that the visible route varies by Fire OS version or model. Try the first route; if it is not present, try the second:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Either tap Apps & Games > Advertising ID > Interest-based Ads, or tap Security & Privacy > Advertising ID.
  3. Turn Interest-based Ads off.

With the setting off, apps that use the tablet’s Advertising ID are instructed not to use that identifier to build an advertising profile or show ads based on inferred interests. Ads can still appear for other reasons, and the setting does not remove lock-screen Special Offers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Advertising ID screen also provides Reset. Use it when you want a new Advertising ID rather than continuing with the existing identifier. Resetting is different from turning interest-based ads off: one creates a new identifier, while the other tells participating apps not to use the identifier for interest-based profiling.

Rank #2
Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet (newest model), 8” HD Display, 4GB memory, 64GB, responsive and vibrant, designed for portable entertainment, Black
  • Fire HD 8 offers an 8" HD display for seamless streaming and gaming, coupled with a 5MP rear facing camera for photos—with a thin, light, durable design.
  • Fast and responsive with long battery life - With up to 4 GB RAM (2X more than 2022 release), 64GB of storage, and up to 1 TB of expandable storage (sold separately). Hexa-core processor for fast, responsive performance. Up to 13 hours of reading, browsing the web, watching videos, gaming, and listening to music at home and on-the-go.
  • Save time, get creative - Enjoy three smart tools to help you send polished emails, quickly summarize webpages, and create unique wallpapers.
  • Stream or download your favorite shows, movies, and games (like Minecraft, Roblox, and more). Enjoy your favorite content from Facebook, Hulu, Instagram, TikTok, and more through Amazon’s Appstore (Google Play not supported. Subscription for some apps required).
  • Stay connected with family and friends - ask Alexa to make video calls to friends and family or download apps like Zoom.

If your goal is to remove paid lock-screen Special Offers, Amazon documents a separate account flow: open Manage Your Devices > Devices, select the tablet, choose Special Offers, and select Remove offers. Amazon says a one-time payment applies and displays the amount in the account flow; no universal price is stated in the support article. The documented instructions are in Limit Interest-Based Ads in Apps and Remove Ads from Your Kindle E-Reader or Fire Tablet.

Turn off location for the tablet or an individual app

Amazon’s privacy FAQ gives this route:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Wireless.
  3. Tap Location-Based Services.
  4. Turn location services off for the whole tablet, or use the individual-app controls shown on your model.

Amazon describes the information as an estimated location and related information used by maps, other apps, and Amazon. A tablet may show fewer or different per-app choices than another generation. For an app that still requests location, open that app’s own settings and privacy notice; Amazon directs users to the provider for service-specific controls. The documented device setting is listed in the privacy FAQ.

Manage Alexa hands-free recording

On compatible Fire tablets, open the tablet’s settings and turn off the Alexa Hands-Free Mode switch. Amazon’s Alexa documentation says the tablet begins recording and sending a request after it detects the wake word; a blue light bar indicates when Alexa is recording and sending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can also use Alexa’s voice deletion commands: say Delete what I just said to remove the most recent request, or Delete everything I said today to delete that day’s requests. For reviewing recordings and other Alexa privacy choices, use the Alexa app or the current Amazon Alexa Privacy controls. Amazon’s Fire-tablet article does not provide one universal menu path for viewing recordings, so do not assume that a route from another Alexa device will match your tablet. See Learn About Using Alexa on Your Fire Tablet.

Clear an app’s cache or its stored data

Amazon’s instructions below are expressly for Fire tablets that are 8th generation or newer. Clearing a cache and clearing app data are different operations:

Action What it is for Risk to local state
Clear Cache Removes temporary files that an app can recreate. Usually targets temporary files, but the app may need to rebuild them.
Clear Data or Clear Storage Resets the app’s locally stored data. Can remove local settings, downloads, sign-in state, or other app data. The Amazon support article lists the control but does not define every app’s data-loss behavior, so check the app’s own sync or backup status first.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps & Notifications.
  3. Tap Manage All Applications or See all apps.
  4. Select the app.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Choose Clear Data or Clear Storage for a full local reset, or choose Clear Cache to remove temporary files.

If an app contains unsynced documents, downloads, game progress, or an offline account, verify its backup first. The source for these generation-specific steps is Amazon’s Clear App Cache and Data on Your Fire Tablet (8th Generation and Newer).

Uninstall a downloaded app

Amazon’s removal route applies to Fire OS 7 and higher:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Games or Apps.
  2. Open the menu.
  3. Choose Library, then Downloaded.
  4. Find the app, open its three-dot menu, and choose Delete from Device.
  5. Confirm the deletion if prompted.

Amazon says preinstalled apps cannot be removed through this procedure. For those apps, organize them on the home screen or use another supported control rather than expecting a complete uninstall. Removing an app from the device does not necessarily delete an account or information held by the app’s service. See Uninstall an App from Your Fire Tablet (FireOS 7 and higher).

Understand app permissions and Fire OS version limits

Usage-data controls and app permissions are separate. A usage setting concerns collection about app activity; a permission controls whether an app can access a capability such as location or camera.

Amazon’s developer documentation for Fire OS 6, which ran on the Fire HD 8 (2018), describes runtime permission checks on API level 23 and higher and the ability to revoke individual permissions. That is developer guidance, not a guaranteed current consumer menu path for every Fire tablet or every app. If your tablet exposes per-app permissions, look in the selected app’s information page under Settings and use the labels shown there. If it does not, use the app’s own privacy controls and your model’s Fire Tablet Help page instead of assuming that a newer Android route applies. The Fire OS 6 reference is Amazon’s Fire OS 6 developer documentation.

Control recommendations and lock-screen content

Dismiss one Discover-row recommendation

Long-press the recommendation in the Discover row and choose Not Interested. This dismisses that item rather than changing every recommendation source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove the Recommendations section

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps and Notifications.
  3. Tap Amazon App Settings.
  4. Tap Home Screens.
  5. Turn off Recommendations and Continue and Discover Row.

Filter mature or adult lock-screen ads

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps and Notifications.
  3. Tap Amazon App Settings.
  4. Tap Special Offers.
  5. Tap Content Filtering and select the filtering option offered.

This is filtering for lock-screen advertising content, not a device-wide mature-content filter. Amazon explicitly warns: Turning on Parental Controls doesn’t remove Mature or Adult-rated content from the device. The recommendation and Special Offers routes are documented in Remove Inappropriate Content from Your Fire Tablet.

Use profiles and parental controls for a child

Amazon describes adult-profile parental controls for users aged 13 and older. Depending on the tablet, they can restrict:

  • Web browsing
  • Email, Contacts, and Calendar
  • Store purchases
  • Prime Video
  • Content types
  • Wireless connectivity
  • Camera access
  • Location-based services

These restrictions do not guarantee removal of mature or adult-rated material from apps, books, music, or Amazon Store search results. For a child younger than 13, Amazon directs caregivers to create a Child Profile: For children under 13, visit our page Create a Child Profile to learn how to make your Fire Tablet kid-friendly. A Child Profile has separate profile settings, so configure it directly rather than assuming the adult profile’s choices carry over.

Because privacy preferences are per profile, review the adult profile and each Child Profile separately. The parental-control details are in Amazon Customer Service’s What are Parental Controls on Fire Tablet?.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a setting or menu is missing

  • Check the software scope: cache/data steps require an 8th-generation-or-newer tablet, and the documented uninstall route requires Fire OS 7 or higher.
  • Search Settings: enter terms such as Advertising ID, Location, Usage Data, or Applications if your Fire OS build offers Settings search.
  • Try the alternate advertising path: look under either Apps & Games or Security & Privacy.
  • Check the active profile: a setting changed in one profile may not appear changed in another.
  • Separate Amazon from app controls: an Amazon device switch cannot override privacy settings maintained inside an Amazon service or a third-party app.
  • Use model-specific help: consult Amazon’s Fire Tablet Help page when labels differ from those listed here.

A practical privacy review checklist

  1. Record the tablet’s generation, Fire OS version, and the profile currently in use.
  2. Review Device Usage Data and decide whether to opt out.
  3. Review Collect App Usage Data for third-party apps.
  4. Turn off Interest-based Ads or reset the Advertising ID if that matches your goal.
  5. Decide whether location should be off for the whole device or only for selected apps.
  6. Disable Alexa Hands-Free Mode on compatible tablets if you do not want wake-word recording and sending.
  7. Clear only an app cache when troubleshooting temporary files; clear app data only after checking sync and backups.
  8. Uninstall downloaded apps through the Fire OS 7-and-newer route, remembering that preinstalled apps are excluded.
  9. Adjust recommendations, lock-screen content filtering, and profile-specific parental controls separately.
  10. Repeat the review for every profile and every Fire tablet you manage.

These controls are deliberately separate: each limits a particular type of access or processing, so privacy on a Fire tablet is managed as a set of targeted decisions rather than one master switch.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
