Samsung’s menu layout varies. Some guidance places settings under Camera > Menu > Settings; other versions use Quick controls > Settings. Use the controls displayed on your phone, or consult Samsung support for your exact model rather than assuming every Galaxy follows the same path. Samsung’s general camera settings guide notes that options can vary by device, Android version and Camera app version.

What the ratio and megapixel labels mean
An aspect ratio describes the shape of the image; a megapixel value describes its resolution. Samsung screens may combine them in one choice—for example, 3:4 (64MP High Resolution)—but choosing a ratio alone does not guarantee a particular megapixel count.
That 64MP option is an example in Samsung’s Australian guide for supported models, not a setting available on every Galaxy. Its example path is Camera > Camera Ratio > 3:4 (64MP High Resolution). The Galaxy S23 Ultra guide likewise describes choosing a ratio and resolution through the camera’s ratio-and-resolution icon. Follow the options shown on your own device.

Available labels differ by phone. Samsung gives 12M, 50M and 200M as examples of resolution options, not as a universal set. A high-resolution choice may also change available zoom magnification.

Higher-resolution photos generally use more storage. Samsung’s Galaxy S9+ user manual puts the trade-off this way: “Using a higher resolution will result in higher quality photos, but the files will be larger and require more storage space.” That manual is for an older model; the storage trade-off is useful context, not current instructions for every Galaxy. Samsung does not give a universal file-size estimate for each resolution.

Resolution can affect more than storage. Samsung notes that available zoom magnification may differ with the selected resolution. On the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung also says consecutive high-resolution captures can take longer to process. If you need to take several photos quickly, check how the selected mode behaves on your model.
Why a photo may save at a lower resolution than expected
A selected high-resolution option does not guarantee that every capture will be saved at that resolution. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 guidance says the phone may save a 12MP image instead of 24MP depending on zoom, shooting mode and environmental conditions. The documented zoom ranges are specific to those models:

| Model | Zoom range Samsung identifies for 24MP |
|---|---|
| Galaxy S26 and S26+ | 1x–1.9x |
| Galaxy S26 Ultra | 0.6x–1.9x and 5x–9.9x |
For the S26 family, Samsung also lists conditions that can result in 12MP output: close-ups, continuous or burst shooting, flash, Night mode, document scan, abnormal operating temperature, and certain Photo enhancer settings. Samsung says Prioritize quality is the Photo enhancer setting that saves at 24MP; Balanced and Prioritize speed are among the conditions associated with 12MP. These details apply to the cited S26 models and should not be assumed for other Galaxy phones.

If your saved photo has fewer megapixels than expected, check the exact model, zoom level, capture mode and—on an S26—Photo enhancer setting. Also verify the image’s actual dimensions in Gallery; a ratio label is not itself a megapixel count.

Resize a photo you have already taken
If you mean changing an existing image rather than setting the camera’s next capture, Samsung documents a separate Gallery workflow: open the image, choose Edit > More options > Resize, then select an available size. This changes the existing image’s dimensions; it does not change the camera capture setting. In the documented workflow, resizing can reduce an image, but cannot increase it beyond its original size. Availability and menu labels may vary by device and software.
