First, identify which “greeting sound” you mean
A voicemail greeting is the message callers hear when they reach your voicemail. The New Voicemail sound is the alert your iPhone plays when a voicemail arrives. Changing one does not change the other. Apple documents the greeting and alert controls separately in its iPhone voicemail settings guide.

| The message callers hear | Phone app > greeting controls | Select a custom greeting or return to the default greeting, subject to carrier and regional support. |
| The alert on your iPhone | Settings > Sounds & Haptics > New Voicemail | Changes the notification sound on the handset; callers still hear the greeting set for voicemail. |
That distinction is the quickest way to choose the right instructions. If someone calling you hears a spoken message, look in the Phone app. If you are trying to change the sound your own iPhone makes after a voicemail arrives, use Settings. If you want callers to stop reaching voicemail altogether, selecting a different greeting is not the same as disabling the voicemail service; the carrier is the practical contact for that service-level request.
Change or record the greeting callers hear
Apple documents different paths depending on the Phone app layout. Follow the one that matches the tabs and controls visible on your iPhone. The Unified layout path is under Calls; the Classic layout path starts with a Voicemail tab. These are alternate routes to greeting controls, not steps that need to be completed in sequence.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Unified layout
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap Calls, then Edit.
- Tap Edit Voicemail Greeting.
- Choose Custom, then tap Record.
- Record your message and use the controls shown on screen to finish and save it.
Classic layout
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap Voicemail, then Greeting.
- Choose Custom, then tap Record.
- Record your message and follow the on-screen controls to finish and save it.
In either layout, the goal is to choose Custom and use the on-screen recording and finish controls. The exact controls after you record may be presented on the screen, so follow those rather than assuming every iPhone shows the same sequence. If you are replacing a custom greeting, the same greeting screen is where you can make the new recording. Apple’s instructions do not promise that every carrier or region offers the recording option, however.
Apple says custom greeting recording is “not supported by all carriers or in all countries and regions.” Its setup guidance likewise says voicemail, Visual Voicemail, and Live Voicemail are available from select carriers in select countries or regions. If you do not see Custom or Record, that may reflect carrier or regional support rather than a setting you have overlooked. See Apple’s instructions for voicemail greeting controls and its voicemail setup and availability information.
What to do if you only see one layout’s path
Do not keep searching for both sets of labels. Apple’s current guide gives one path for the Unified layout and another for the Classic layout. If the tabs on your Phone app do not match the first route, look for the Classic route instead. If neither route leads to greeting controls, the next useful step is to check voicemail availability with your carrier rather than treating a missing menu as proof that a particular greeting feature is hidden somewhere else.

Return to the default greeting—or disable voicemail
To stop using a custom message, open the greeting screen using the path for your Phone app layout and choose Default, if it is offered. Apple’s setup instructions describe Default and Custom as greeting choices. Choosing Default returns voicemail to the default greeting option; it does not necessarily switch off the voicemail service on your line.
This answers a common interpretation of “turn off my greeting”: if you mean “stop playing the greeting I recorded,” select Default where available. It does not mean that callers will no longer be able to leave voicemail. A default greeting is still a greeting option, and the voicemail service may remain active. If you mean “turn off voicemail so callers do not reach that service,” ask your wireless carrier about disabling voicemail on your line. The iPhone’s greeting choice and the carrier’s voicemail service are different things.

If you want callers not to reach voicemail at all, or if callers continue to hear a greeting you did not select, contact your wireless carrier and ask about voicemail service for your line. The carrier may manage the voicemail service or greeting. Verizon, for example, provides carrier-specific iPhone voicemail greeting instructions; the applicable steps and available controls can depend on your carrier.
Be specific when you contact the carrier: explain whether you want to replace a spoken greeting, return to the default greeting, or disable voicemail service. Those requests are not interchangeable. The iPhone’s documented Default choice addresses the greeting selection, while questions about whether voicemail is active on the line belong with the carrier.

Change the iPhone’s new voicemail alert
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Tap New Voicemail.
- Choose an alert sound.
This changes the sound the iPhone plays to notify you about new voicemail. It does not edit the spoken greeting callers hear. If your goal is to change what callers hear, use the Phone app greeting controls instead. The two paths are intentionally separate: the greeting is managed through Phone, while the handset’s new voicemail alert is selected in Settings.
This distinction also helps diagnose an apparent failed change. If you changed New Voicemail but a caller still hears the old spoken message, the alert setting worked on the wrong part of the experience for your goal. Return to the Phone app’s greeting screen to check the selected greeting. If the controls are unavailable or callers still hear the old greeting after you check there, ask the carrier to check the greeting or voicemail service on the line.
How Live Voicemail fits in
Live Voicemail is separate from greeting selection. Apple describes it as a feature that can show a real-time transcription while someone leaves a message and let you answer during the message. Availability varies by country, region, and language. Do not assume that changing Live Voicemail changes the greeting stored for your carrier’s voicemail service; use the greeting controls for that.

In other words, Live Voicemail concerns what can happen while a caller is leaving a message, including the transcription and the opportunity to answer. It is not another name for the caller-facing greeting, and it is not the setting for the iPhone’s New Voicemail alert tone. If you are trying to change the words callers hear before or while they leave a message, use the greeting controls. If your question is about Live Voicemail availability or behavior, Apple’s setup information is the relevant guide; availability depends on carrier, country or region, and language.

Troubleshoot missing controls or an unchanged greeting
The greeting or edit option is missing
- Check which Phone app layout you are using and try its corresponding route: Calls > Edit > Edit Voicemail Greeting or Voicemail > Greeting.
- If the control is still absent, check with your carrier whether voicemail and custom greetings are supported for your line and region. Apple notes that availability is limited to select carriers and locations.
There is no single menu path that applies to every layout, carrier, and region. Apple supplies the two layout-specific paths, and it explicitly qualifies availability of voicemail features and custom recording. That means a missing Greeting, Custom, or Record control may be a support limitation. If you have identified the matching layout and still cannot reach the control, carrier support can confirm whether voicemail and custom greetings are provisioned for your line.
The custom greeting will not record, or callers do not hear it
Contact your carrier to check whether voicemail is active and correctly set up for your account. A carrier’s voicemail service may control what callers hear, even when you have used the iPhone’s greeting screen. Carrier-specific instructions may differ; Verizon publishes its own iPhone voicemail greeting guidance, for example.
Separate the two possible problems when describing the issue. If the iPhone does not offer recording controls, ask whether custom greeting recording is supported for the carrier, region, and line. If you recorded a greeting but callers still hear the old one, ask the carrier to check the greeting stored for the voicemail service. The available facts do not establish one universal carrier procedure, so follow the instructions for your own provider.
The alert changed, but callers still hear the old message
You changed the handset’s New Voicemail alert, not the caller-facing greeting. Reopen the Phone app’s greeting controls and check the selected greeting. If callers still hear the old message, ask your carrier to check the voicemail greeting on your line.

I chose Default, but voicemail is still available
That is not necessarily a problem. Default changes the greeting selection; it does not necessarily disable the voicemail service. If your goal is to stop callers from reaching voicemail, contact the carrier about the service on your line rather than looking for a second greeting option that turns voicemail off.
The menu labels do not match these steps
Apple provides separate paths for the Unified and Classic Phone app layouts. Labels or available controls can also vary with iOS version, carrier, and region, so use the path visible in your Phone app and contact your carrier when voicemail service controls are unavailable. If your question concerns a caller-facing message, do not use the Settings alert path just because it contains the word voicemail; it changes only the sound on your iPhone.

How do I change my voicemail greeting on iPhone?
Open Phone and use the path for your layout: Calls > Edit > Edit Voicemail Greeting in the Unified layout, or Voicemail > Greeting in the Classic layout. Choose Custom, tap Record, and follow the on-screen controls to finish and save. Custom recording is not supported by all carriers or in all countries and regions.
How do I turn off my iPhone voicemail greeting?
If you mean stop using a greeting you recorded, select Default on the greeting screen if that choice is available. This returns to the default greeting; it does not necessarily disable voicemail. To ask that voicemail be turned off on your line, contact your wireless carrier.
How do I get back to the default voicemail greeting?
Open the greeting screen in Phone and choose Default, if offered. The route is Calls > Edit > Edit Voicemail Greeting in the Unified layout or Voicemail > Greeting in the Classic layout.

How do I change the sound for new voicemail?
Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > New Voicemail and choose an alert sound. This changes the alert your iPhone plays, not the spoken greeting callers hear.
Why can’t I find Greeting or Custom in the Phone app?
First use the route that matches your Phone app layout. If the controls are still missing, voicemail or custom greeting recording may not be supported by your carrier or in your country or region. Check with your carrier about support for your line.
Does Live Voicemail change my greeting?
No. Apple describes Live Voicemail as showing a real-time transcription while someone leaves a message and letting you answer during the message. It is separate from greeting selection, and availability varies by country, region, and language.
