“Copilot button” can mean the Copilot control on the taskbar or a dedicated Copilot key on your keyboard. To hide the taskbar control, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and switch off the Copilot or “Ask Copilot” option if it appears. To change a physical Copilot key’s action, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard and choose an available action.
First, identify which Copilot control you want to change
Windows settings treat the taskbar control and a dedicated keyboard key separately. Changing one does not necessarily change the other. The Copilot app also has its own shortcut settings.

| What you want to change | Where to look | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Show or hide Copilot on the taskbar | Settings > Personalization > Taskbar | The toggle or its label may differ by Windows configuration. Microsoft’s accessibility instructions call it “Ask Copilot.” |
| Change what the physical Copilot key does | Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard | Choices depend on the device, account settings, and installed applications. Microsoft’s Copilot-key guidance describes the customization options. |
| Change how Copilot app shortcuts launch the app | Copilot app: Account > Settings > Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts | Use the app’s setting to adjust shortcut behavior; it is separate from taskbar visibility. Microsoft’s Windows Copilot access guide describes the shortcut options. |
Remove Copilot from the taskbar
- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization > Taskbar.
- Look for the Copilot or Ask Copilot toggle and turn it off, if available.
If you do not see the toggle, your Windows version or configuration may not offer it under that name. The Microsoft guide documents the “Ask Copilot” control but does not establish that every PC has the same taskbar option.
Change what the dedicated Copilot key does
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard.
- Find the Copilot-key customization setting and select one of the actions offered on your device.
Available actions may include Search, Microsoft Copilot, Custom, or Copilot; you may see a different list. The key’s behavior can depend on account settings, installed apps, and device-specific settings.

If your manufacturer provides its own controls for remapping or managing the Copilot key, Microsoft advises using either the Windows setting or the device setting—not both.
Watch for the Right Ctrl shortcut conflict
Microsoft warns that assigning the Copilot key to Right Ctrl affects combinations that use Right Ctrl with Windows or Shift: those RCtrl+Win and RCtrl+Shift shortcuts will not work as normal. Microsoft recommends using Left Ctrl for those combinations instead.

Change Copilot app shortcut behavior
If you want to change whether keyboard shortcuts open the Copilot app, use Account > Settings > Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts in the app. Microsoft says Windows+C and a dedicated Copilot key can launch Copilot, subject to the available configuration. This setting changes shortcut behavior; it does not hide the taskbar control.
