“Math” is not a language setting in Windows 11 Narrator. It is a punctuation level that makes Narrator speak most mathematical symbols. To hear text in another language with a matching voice, install a supported text-to-speech voice in Windows and select it in Narrator. When a matching voice is available, Narrator selects it automatically; otherwise, Narrator names the text’s language and reads it with the default voice.
What the Math setting changes
Microsoft describes Math as a Narrator punctuation level. It controls how much punctuation and symbol detail Narrator reads, including most mathematical symbols; it does not choose the spoken language or voice. See Microsoft’s Chapter 4: Reading text.

To switch punctuation levels, use Narrator + Alt + Left bracket or Narrator + Alt + Right bracket. “Narrator” means the Narrator key configured on your device; Microsoft documents these shortcuts for cycling through punctuation levels.

- Open Narrator settings: press Windows logo key + Ctrl + N.
- Open Windows speech settings: in Narrator settings, choose Add legacy voices. This opens Settings > Time & language > Speech.
- Add an available voice: choose and install a voice for the language you need in Speech settings.
- Choose the voice in Narrator: return to Narrator settings and select the desired voice under Choose a voice.
Microsoft documents the Add legacy voices route and voice selection in Chapter 7: Customizing Narrator and its supported languages and voices guide. Voice availability depends on language.

Install speech features from Language options
You can also check whether Windows offers speech features for a language through Settings > Time & language > Language & region. Open that language’s Language options and download speech features if they are available. Microsoft notes that not every language has speech features. The route is described in its guide to managing language and keyboard settings.
What happens when Narrator reads other-language text
If a voice for the text’s language is installed, Narrator automatically selects it. If there is no matching installed voice, Narrator announces the language and reads using the default text-to-speech voice. Installing a voice and selecting one in Narrator are therefore distinct steps: an available language voice enables matching speech, while Choose a voice controls the voice you select for Narrator.

Narrator is already included in Windows 11
There is no separate Narrator download: Microsoft Support says it is built into Windows 11. The voice options described above are added through Windows settings. See Microsoft’s Complete guide to Narrator.
