First make sure the child’s Microsoft account is in the parent’s family group; then open the child’s privacy or online-safety settings through the Xbox privacy settings site or Xbox Family app. Choose permissions for the child’s edition and the activities you want to allow. Minecraft says these family controls apply even when the game is played on another platform.
It helps to think of access as several separate gates. A child may need permission on the account, the host’s Bedrock world must allow multiplayer, players may need to be Minecraft friends, and console play may require that platform’s online service. Changing one setting cannot fix every kind of access problem.

Before changing Minecraft multiplayer settings
Check that the child plays using a Microsoft account and that the parent’s account is associated with that child through a Microsoft family group. If the child account is not in a group, use the parent account to create a family group and add the existing account, or create a child account. The age at which an account is treated as a child account depends on the region.
Sign in as the parent when managing the child’s controls. Minecraft’s parental-control guidance says that only parent accounts can modify a child’s settings. Being able to launch Minecraft on a device does not, by itself, give that device’s user permission to change the account-level controls. If you are signed in as the child, switch to the parent account before looking for family settings; the child’s game profile and the parent’s management account have different roles.

These controls are tied to the Microsoft family relationship, not to one particular console. Minecraft says it uses Microsoft and Xbox family safety features to manage parental controls even when Minecraft is played on a platform other than Xbox. A child playing on a different supported platform can therefore still be subject to account-level permissions managed through the parent’s family settings.
Change the child’s account permissions
- Sign in with the parent account. Use the Microsoft account that manages the child in the family group. If more than one adult account is involved, use the one that is actually associated with the child as a parent or guardian.
- Choose a management route. Open the Xbox privacy and online-safety settings site, or use the Xbox Family app. Minecraft documents both options for managing a child account. They are two ways to reach the account controls; you do not need to change the same permission in both places.
- Select the child account. Open that child’s privacy or online-safety controls rather than changing the parent’s own settings. If the child is not listed, first confirm the account is in the parent’s Microsoft family group and that you are signed in with the family organizer or parent account.
- Find the permission for the activity you want to manage. Check the game edition first: Bedrock and Java do not expose precisely the same set of controls. Consider whether the decision concerns joining multiplayer, Realms, cross-network play, friend discovery or requests, or communication. Those are related but distinct permissions.
- Choose the access that matches your decision. Read the setting’s current description and available options in the account interface. Do not infer that changing one permission automatically turns on or off the others. A restriction intended to prevent communication, for example, is not necessarily the same as blocking multiplayer access.
- Save the change and check it in Minecraft. If the new permission does not appear to take effect, close Minecraft and sign in again. Minecraft’s recommendation to restart appears in its Realms Stories permissions guidance; treat it as a useful refresh step for that situation, not as a universal requirement for every settings change.
Menu labels can change, and some Minecraft help pages about these controls have appeared in translated versions that warn of possible translation errors. If wording in the live English interface differs from a help-page description, use the current setting label and its explanation in the account interface rather than relying on a translated label. The route is consistent at a high level—parent account, child account, privacy or online-safety controls—but exact labels and layouts may vary.
Which permissions are different in Bedrock and Java?
There is no single “safe multiplayer” switch that represents every online activity. Minecraft’s guidance describes different controls for the two editions. Use the table to identify the kind of permission to look for; confirm its current wording and available choices in the child’s account settings.
| Permission area | Bedrock Edition | Java Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Multiplayer and Realms | Controls access to multiplayer games and Realms; server access is also covered by Minecraft’s multiplayer guidance. | Java permissions differ from Bedrock; check the child account’s current privacy controls. |
| Playing across networks | A separate control determines whether the child can play with people on other platforms. | The cited multiplayer guidance does not list this as a Java control. |
| Finding or adding other players | Controls include friend discovery or adding friends. | Controls include friend requests. |
| Communication | Communication is controlled through account settings; check the current interface for available choices. | The guidance describes friend-only communication as an available choice. |
The practical distinction is that the edition determines which specific permission labels and choices to expect. Bedrock players may need to consider cross-network play as well as general multiplayer access. The multiplayer help guidance refers to friend discovery or adding friends in Bedrock and friend requests in Java. Communication is another separate control; friend-only communication is described as an available Java choice, but do not assume an identical menu or audience options for Bedrock.
Before changing anything, identify the child’s edition and the intended activity. If the child plays Bedrock with someone on another platform, review both multiplayer access and cross-network play. If the child plays Java and wants to join an online server, focus on the applicable Java multiplayer permission and the server connection process. If the concern is who can contact the child, review communication and friend-related options separately from joining access.
Choose settings for the access you intend to allow
If the child should not join multiplayer games
Look for the multiplayer access permission for the child’s edition and restrict it. Bedrock’s controls also address Realms access. This is an account-level gate: it does not change the settings of a world hosted by someone else, nor does it replace platform-specific online-play requirements.

Use this choice when the goal is to restrict online play rather than merely limit a particular contact or communication channel. If you later allow a specific session, remember that the host’s world settings, the child’s account permission, and any platform requirements still have to permit it. Do not expect a family setting to configure the host’s world on the child’s behalf.
If the child should play only with people on other platforms when you allow it
For Bedrock, review the cross-network play permission separately from general multiplayer access. It governs play with people on other platforms. Do not assume that allowing multiplayer automatically means cross-network play is allowed—or that changing cross-network play grants permission to join every world.
This distinction is useful when a child is trying to join someone using a different platform. The cross-network permission concerns platform-to-platform play; it does not override a disabled multiplayer option, a world that disallows multiplayer, a missing friend connection, or a console online-service requirement. Check each relevant condition rather than repeatedly changing the same cross-network setting.
If you want to manage contact or friend discovery
Review the friend-related setting for the edition: Bedrock guidance refers to finding or adding friends, while Java guidance refers to friend requests. These controls affect how players can discover or connect with one another; they are distinct from permission to enter multiplayer or a Realm.
That distinction matters when a child can play online but you want to manage who can initiate or establish a connection. Conversely, allowing friend discovery does not necessarily grant the account permission to join multiplayer. The account interface’s current description should guide the choice because labels and details can vary by edition and settings interface.
If you want to limit communication
Check the account’s communication controls independently. Minecraft’s guidance specifically describes friend-only communication as an available Java choice. For Bedrock or any other current interface, verify which audience choices are actually offered before selecting one; do not assume the same options exist across editions.

Communication controls are not a substitute for multiplayer access controls. If the child should not enter multiplayer at all, review multiplayer access. If the child is allowed to play but you want to limit contact, review communication and friend-related settings too. Selecting a narrower communication option does not, by itself, guarantee that every other online interaction is unavailable.
Why multiplayer may still be unavailable
Account permission is only one part of joining a game. If a friend cannot join a Bedrock world, check the following in order:
- Confirm the host’s world allows multiplayer. The world’s own multiplayer setting can block joining even when the joining account has permission. This is a host-side setting, separate from the child’s family controls.
- Check the joining player’s account permission. Verify that the child’s account can join multiplayer under the applicable family settings. Check the edition and the relevant permission rather than assuming that an allowed friend or communication setting also allows joining.
- Check the friend connection. Players may need to be connected as Minecraft friends for the intended session. A family setting that permits friend discovery does not itself add the other player as a friend.
- Make sure both players are updated. Different game versions can interfere with joining. Check both players’ game installations rather than updating only the host or only the child’s device.
- Check the console’s online-service requirement. Minecraft’s support guidance names Xbox Game Pass Core, Nintendo Switch Online, and PlayStation Plus for console online play. Requirements can change and depend on platform, so confirm the current rule with the console platform before troubleshooting further.
- Recheck the kind of session. A Bedrock world, a Realm, and a Java online server are not interchangeable connection routes. Make sure the permissions and steps you are checking match the session the players are trying to join.
Changing a Microsoft family setting cannot turn on multiplayer in a host’s world, connect two accounts as friends, update an older game installation, or satisfy a console service requirement. Treat each as a separate check rather than repeatedly changing the same privacy permission.
If the account permission appears right but access is still blocked, identify which part of the route fails: can the child sign in, can the child reach multiplayer, can the host’s world accept players, and can the two players connect as friends if needed? This helps distinguish an account restriction from a world setting or connection prerequisite. The exact error may point toward one of those gates, but the checks above remain useful even when the message is not specific.
Java servers and Realms are different options
A Java player can use Minecraft’s Multiplayer menu to select an existing server, add one, or connect directly using a server address. Minecraft says joining an online Java server does not require a Realms subscription. That distinction is about the server option; it does not remove a child account’s multiplayer permission requirement.
Realms access and joining a Java server should therefore not be treated as interchangeable permissions or products. Check the relevant account permission for the child, then follow the connection method for the session they intend to join. If the child is using a server address, the connection method is to add or direct-connect to the server; it is not the same thing as subscribing to Realms. Conversely, the fact that a server does not require Realms does not mean that family permissions or other access requirements can be ignored.

What parental controls do—and what they do not guarantee
Minecraft describes Microsoft account parental controls as a way to manage which online games children may access, whom they may communicate with, and what they may buy. These are useful access and contact controls, but they do not guarantee that every interaction is safe or that every independent server is covered by the same protections.
Minecraft also describes proactive chat filtering for Bedrock Edition, Java Edition Realms, and verified partner Bedrock servers. Do not treat that scope as covering every independently operated server, and do not treat filtering as a substitute for deciding which multiplayer access and communication permissions are appropriate for the child. Filtering has a described scope; it is not a promise that all chat in every Minecraft environment is monitored or filtered.
Parents can use the controls together rather than treating one as a complete solution: decide whether multiplayer is allowed, consider whether cross-network play is appropriate for Bedrock, review friend-related access, and choose communication settings based on the options actually available. These choices manage access and contact, while chat filtering provides an additional safeguard in the environments Minecraft identifies. None of them removes the need to consider the particular world, server, or people involved.
Marketplace purchases are a separate family control
Family settings also address what a child can buy in Minecraft experiences, including Marketplace purchases. Spending controls are adjacent to multiplayer permissions, not a prerequisite for changing them. If the concern is purchases rather than joining games or communicating, use the separate family guidance for child-account Marketplace spending instead of changing multiplayer access as a workaround.
This separation can prevent an overly broad change. A parent trying to prevent Marketplace spending does not need to block multiplayer just to reach a purchase control, and changing multiplayer permissions does not settle what the child can buy. Treat spending as its own family-management question.
Sources and interface caveats
Minecraft’s relevant official help topics include “Set Up Microsoft Family Groups for Parental Controls in Minecraft,” “Managing Multiplayer Game Access for a Child Account in Minecraft,” and its Realms Stories permissions guidance. Some surfaced multiplayer and safety guidance is translated and cautions that translation errors are possible. Account interfaces, regional child-account rules, and console subscription requirements can change; check the current settings and platform terms for the child’s location and device.
Best Value
No universal age cutoff or console subscription price applies to every family and region based on these instructions. The age treatment for child accounts depends on location, and online-service rules are platform-specific and subject to change. Use the live account interface and current platform terms for exact labels and requirements rather than relying on an old menu description.

Where do I change Minecraft parental controls for a child?
Use the parent’s Microsoft account and the child’s privacy or online-safety settings through the Xbox privacy settings site or Xbox Family app. The child must be associated with the parent through a Microsoft family group, and only a parent account can modify the child’s settings.
Do Minecraft parental controls work if the child does not play on Xbox?
Yes. Minecraft says Microsoft and Xbox family safety features manage these parental controls even when Minecraft is played on a platform other than Xbox.
Is multiplayer the same permission as cross-network play or communication?
No. Bedrock guidance describes separate controls for multiplayer and Realms access, cross-network play, friend discovery or adding friends, and communication. Java’s listed controls differ, including friend requests and a friend-only communication choice. Check the child’s current account interface for exact labels and options.
Why can’t my child join a friend’s Bedrock world after I allow multiplayer?
The host’s world may have multiplayer disabled, players may need to be Minecraft friends, either game may need an update, or console online play may require a platform subscription. Also confirm that the joining account has the relevant permission. Account approval does not override these other gates.

Minecraft says joining an online Java server does not require a Realms subscription. A child account’s multiplayer permission still matters, and the player connects by selecting a server, adding one, or direct-connecting with its address.
Should I restart Minecraft after changing a permission?
If the change does not appear, close Minecraft and sign in again as a refresh step. Minecraft’s restart recommendation appears in its Realms Stories permissions guidance, so it should not be treated as a universal requirement for every settings change.
Do parental controls or chat filtering guarantee that every Minecraft interaction is safe?
No. The controls manage access, communication, and purchases, while proactive chat filtering is described for Bedrock Edition, Java Edition Realms, and verified partner Bedrock servers. That scope does not establish coverage for every independently operated server.
The Bottom Line
Manage Minecraft child permissions from the parent’s Microsoft family account, then choose settings for the child’s edition and the specific activity—multiplayer, Realms, cross-network play, friends, or communication. If access still fails, check the host’s world, friend connection, game updates, and any applicable console online-service requirement; no single family setting controls all of those gates.
