Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChange Mafia III’s graphics and frame-rate settings from the game itself: start the game, open Options, choose Display, then select the available frame-rate cap and display options. The PC patch provides 30 FPS, 60 FPS and unlimited choices. Start with 60 FPS if your computer can sustain it; use 30 FPS for a steadier target on slower hardware, and choose unlimited only when your system can deliver consistent frame pacing.
Change the frame-rate cap in Mafia III
The reliable path is the in-game menu rather than a launcher setting. 2K’s PC patch announcement says the frame-rate selection is in the display menu and lists three choices: 30, 60 and unlimited frames per second. The same announcement says to tailor the setting to the power of your machine (2K’s Mafia III PC patch announcement on Steam).

- Launch Mafia III and wait for the main menu, or pause the game while playing.
- Open Options.
- Select Display.
- Find the frame-rate option and choose 30, 60 or Unlimited, depending on what your PC can maintain.
- Apply or confirm the change if the menu presents a confirmation prompt, then return to the game and compare movement and camera pans.
If you changed a value in a launcher and nothing appears different, make the change again in Options > Display. A PCGamingWiki community report warns that launcher changes may be ignored and recommends configuring the settings in-game (PCGamingWiki’s Mafia III optimized-settings report).
Which Mafia III FPS option should you use?
A cap is useful when it matches a frame rate your computer can hold consistently. An unlimited setting removes the game’s explicit cap, but it does not guarantee a higher or smoother result: if output swings widely, the game can feel less even than with a lower fixed target. The available evidence does not establish a modern hardware-specific “best” choice, so use the following as a decision framework rather than a benchmark.

| Option | When it makes sense | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| 30 FPS | Choose this when a higher target causes frequent drops and you prefer a stable, predictable presentation. | Motion is less fluid than at 60 FPS, but consistency can be better on a PC that cannot sustain 60. |
| 60 FPS | Use this as the first higher target when your system can hold it during driving, combat and busy city scenes. | If the frame rate repeatedly falls below 60, test lower graphics settings or return to a steadier cap. |
| Unlimited | Try it only when your hardware has enough headroom and you want the game to render above the fixed choices. | Unrestricted output can fluctuate; compare frame pacing and responsiveness, not just the highest number you see. |
Change one variable at a time. For example, select 60 FPS, play the same demanding route for several minutes, then test a graphics option. This gives you a usable comparison instead of mixing a new cap with several visual changes at once.
What the PC graphics menu controls
A launch-era PC Gamer feature published in October 2016 described global quality presets that changed eight core settings: depth of field, ambient occlusion, motion blur, geometry detail, shadow quality, reflection quality, volumetric effects and antialiasing. It also described resolution, V-sync, fullscreen and an FPS limiter. The feature is useful for understanding the menu’s design and visual trade-offs, but it is not proof that every later build exposes exactly the same labels or behaves identically on current hardware (the archived 2K/PC Gamer feature in Steam’s Mafia III news archive).
| Setting | What it changes visually | Performance guidance from the available tests |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | The number of pixels rendered for the game image. | Higher resolutions require more rendering work. Compare at the resolution you actually intend to play; no universal FPS result is established here. |
| V-sync | Synchronizes presented frames with the display’s refresh cycle. | Its effect depends on the display and frame rate. Test it with your chosen cap rather than assuming one setting is best for every system. |
| Fullscreen | Controls whether the game uses a fullscreen presentation mode. | Use the mode that behaves correctly on your display; the sources do not establish a universal performance difference. |
| FPS limiter | Sets a ceiling on rendered frames, including the documented 30, 60 and unlimited choices. | Choose a target your PC can sustain. Unlimited can produce uneven pacing if output varies. |
| Depth of field | Adds a camera-focus blur effect, especially on background areas. | The 2016 feature reported little performance impact on its tested hardware. Treat that as a historical observation, not a guarantee. |
| Ambient occlusion | Adds contact shading where surfaces meet, helping objects appear grounded. | The supplied sources do not provide a current, quantified cost; compare it on your own system after the more demanding settings. |
| Motion blur | Blurs fast camera or object movement. | The historical test reported little performance impact on its hardware. Disable it for image clarity only if you prefer that look; it is not identified as a guaranteed major performance lever. |
| Geometry detail | Controls the complexity or distance of world geometry. | The 2016 feature found little performance impact on its test system. Results can differ with CPU, GPU, scene and build. |
| Shadow quality | Changes the detail and appearance of cast shadows. | The feature showed visible differences between presets, but it did not establish a universal modern cost ranking. |
| Reflection quality | Controls detail in reflective surfaces such as wet streets and glass. | PCGamingWiki’s community report identified this as a reasonable first setting to lower when performance is poor. |
| Volumetric effects | Controls atmospheric lighting and volume effects such as haze or light shafts. | The community report also identified this as a relatively demanding choice and a good early experiment. |
| Antialiasing | Smooths jagged edges around geometry. | The sources do not give a current measured cost for each available level; change it only after recording a baseline. |
The historical feature reported that reflections, lighting and effects were more visibly different between presets than depth of field, motion blur and geometry detail on its tested machine. That ranking belongs to the reviewer’s 2016 test context; GPU model, CPU, resolution, drivers and game build can change the result.

Which settings should you lower for better performance?
Start with Volumetric Effects and Reflection Quality
When the game struggles, lower Volumetric Effects first, then test Reflection Quality, or reverse that order if reflections are the obvious visual burden in your scenes. These two settings were singled out by a PCGamingWiki community optimization report as relatively demanding on its tested system. They are a sensible starting order, not a promise that every current PC will show the same gains.
Make one change, then retest
- Record your current frame-rate cap and graphics values.
- Lower Volumetric Effects by one available level.
- Replay a repeatable section of the game, such as the same drive or combat area, and note whether frame delivery feels steadier.
- If the improvement is insufficient, restore the setting or keep it lowered and test Reflection Quality by one level.
- Only then evaluate shadows, antialiasing, resolution or other controls. Stop when the frame-rate target is stable without visual compromises you dislike.
Avoid changing a global preset and several individual controls at the same time. You will not know which adjustment helped, and a preset can silently raise a setting you had already tuned.
Do not lower every setting automatically
The 2016 PC Gamer test found little performance impact from depth of field, motion blur and geometry detail on its hardware. If those effects do not bother you, leaving them unchanged may preserve image quality while you work on the settings that the community report found more demanding. This is a test order, not a universal ranking for every graphics card.

Use the posted system requirements as a baseline, not a guarantee
2K’s support page, published August 23, 2016 and updated September 3, 2025, lists the following requirements (2K Support: Mafia III PC System Requirements):
| Tier | Operating system | Processor | Memory | Graphics | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Windows 7 64-bit | Intel i5-2500K | 6 GB RAM | Radeon HD 7870 or GeForce GTX 660 with 2 GB video memory | 50 GB free disk space |
| Recommended | Windows 7 64-bit | Intel i7-3770 | 8 GB RAM | Radeon R9 290X or GeForce GTX 780 with 4 GB video memory | 50 GB free disk space |
2K specifically says Intel HD 5500 and earlier integrated graphics do not meet the minimum requirements. These are the specifications posted by 2K, even though the page was updated in 2025; they are not a current compatibility guarantee or a performance benchmark for modern CPUs and GPUs. Meeting the listed recommendation does not establish that a particular frame-rate cap will be maintained in every scene.
Troubleshoot settings that do not seem to work
The FPS value changes but performance does not
- Confirm that you changed the option under Options > Display in the game, not only in a launcher.
- Test the same scene after switching between 30 and 60 FPS. If both feel identical, the PC may be unable to reach the higher target, or another bottleneck may be limiting output.
- Lower Volumetric Effects and Reflection Quality one at a time, then retest.
Unlimited feels less consistent than 60
Return to the 60 FPS choice and compare the same gameplay segment. Unlimited is an available option, not a guarantee of smoother frame delivery. A fixed target that the system can sustain can feel more consistent than a fluctuating unrestricted output.
The image looks different after a preset change
Global quality presets can alter eight core settings at once. Reopen the detailed display controls and check reflections, volumetric effects, shadows, antialiasing and the other values you care about. If you want a controlled comparison, select a preset, note its values, and then adjust one option at a time.
You cannot resolve the problem through the menu
PCGamingWiki documents Mafia III’s Windows video configuration file at %LOCALAPPDATA%2K GamesMafia IIISavesvideoconfig.cfg (PCGamingWiki’s Mafia III reference). Treat this as an advanced troubleshooting reference:
- Exit the game completely.
- Copy
videoconfig.cfgto another folder as a backup before editing anything. - Make only a documented, intentional change, preserving the original copy so you can restore it.
- Start the game and verify the result in Options > Display.
The file path does not mean manual editing is required for normal use. Begin with the in-game menu, and use the file only when the menu does not resolve a specific configuration problem.

A practical tuning sequence for your PC
Because no current hardware benchmark accompanies these settings, the most dependable approach is a short, repeatable comparison on your own computer.
- Choose a target. Start at 60 FPS if you want the higher documented cap; choose 30 FPS when 60 is not sustainable. Test unlimited only after you have a stable baseline.
- Keep the display mode and resolution fixed. Changing them at the same time makes it difficult to attribute a performance change.
- Play a demanding section. Drive through a busy area or repeat a combat sequence rather than judging only from a quiet interior.
- Lower Volumetric Effects. Compare the same section and keep the change only if it improves consistency enough to justify the visual trade-off.
- Test Reflection Quality. Use the same comparison method.
- Evaluate other controls individually. Consider shadows, antialiasing, ambient occlusion, resolution and the remaining options only after the first two experiments.
- Lock in the least disruptive combination. The goal is a frame-rate target your PC can sustain during the situations that previously caused trouble, not the highest number shown in an uncomplicated scene.
Record the cap and settings that worked. If a future update, driver change or display change alters behavior, you can return to that known configuration instead of starting from an unknown preset.
How to judge changes without confusing the results
Use the same resolution, fullscreen choice, V-sync state and frame-rate cap while comparing individual graphics options. Otherwise, a change in presentation mode or target can look like an improvement from the setting you meant to test. A short repeatable route is more useful than a single glance at a quiet menu: drive through the same busy district, perform a similar combat action and watch a camera pan in both runs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Judge two things separately. First, look at frame-rate consistency during the difficult section. Second, inspect the visual cost of the change in the places where that option is visible. Reflections may matter most on wet roads or windows; volumetric effects may be easiest to see in haze and light shafts. If lowering an option produces no meaningful improvement in your route, restore it and test the next control instead of assuming the setting is defective.
A global preset is useful for a quick starting point, but it changes multiple values simultaneously. Once you have selected a preset, write down the individual values that matter to you. You can then keep its useful changes while restoring a favored setting such as antialiasing, shadows or motion blur. This also makes it easier to reproduce your configuration after troubleshooting.

The minimum tier calls for 6 GB of RAM, a processor equivalent to the Intel i5-2500K, and a Radeon HD 7870 or GeForce GTX 660 with 2 GB of video memory. The recommended tier raises memory to 8 GB and lists the Intel i7-3770 alongside a Radeon R9 290X or GeForce GTX 780 with 4 GB of video memory. Both tiers list 50 GB of free space and Windows 7 64-bit. These figures describe the hardware range 2K posted; they do not say that a minimum-tier PC will hold 60 FPS or that a newer integrated GPU is automatically suitable.

If your machine is near the minimum, establish a 30 FPS baseline before making visual changes. If that target is steady, test 60 only after reducing the settings that the community report found demanding. If the game still cannot hold the target, that is useful information: a lower cap may provide a better experience than repeatedly chasing brief peaks. The integrated-graphics warning is explicit as well—Intel HD 5500 and earlier do not meet 2K’s minimum specification—so those systems should not be treated as a normal settings-tuning case.

Preserve a known-good configuration
Once you find a combination that works, record the frame-rate choice, resolution, display mode and the levels of Volumetric Effects and Reflection Quality. This simple note helps distinguish a game-setting problem from a later driver or display change. If you need to inspect the configuration file, close Mafia III first and keep an untouched copy of videoconfig.cfg. Manual editing is an advanced fallback, not a replacement for the normal menu, and an original backup gives you a way to undo an unsuccessful experiment.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The 30/60/unlimited choices and the in-game display-menu path come from 2K’s October 2016 PC patch announcement. The detailed setting descriptions and performance observations come from launch-period coverage and a 2016 community report. They explain how to approach the controls, but they do not measure current GPUs, CPUs, resolutions or drivers. Your machine may show a different cost for every option.
For that reason, use the documented requirements to check whether your PC is in the game’s stated range, then use controlled in-game comparisons to select a cap and graphics mix. No particular graphics card, display, storage device or purchase is required to perform these adjustments.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change Mafia 3 graphics settings on PC?
Launch Mafia III, open Options, select Display, and adjust the frame-rate choice and other display controls there. Use the in-game menu even if a launcher also shows graphics settings, because a PCGamingWiki report says launcher changes may be ignored.
How do I unlock FPS in Mafia 3?
In Options > Display, choose Unlimited. 2K’s PC patch lists unlimited alongside 30 and 60 FPS. Unlimited removes the explicit cap but does not guarantee smoother play; use it only if your PC can deliver consistent frame pacing.
Best Value
Which settings should I lower for better performance?
Start by testing Volumetric Effects and Reflection Quality one at a time. A 2016 PCGamingWiki community report identified them as relatively demanding on its test system. Keep each change only if it improves your own frame consistency without an unacceptable visual loss.
Is unlimited FPS better than 60 FPS?
Not necessarily. Unlimited can render above 60 when hardware has headroom, but fluctuating output may feel less consistent than a 60 FPS cap the computer can sustain. Compare the same driving or combat sequence with both choices.
Why did changing settings in my launcher do nothing?
Reopen Mafia III and make the change under Options > Display. The community settings report warns that launcher values may be ignored, so the game’s own menu is the dependable place to configure them.
Where is Mafia III’s video configuration file?
PCGamingWiki documents it at %LOCALAPPDATA%2K GamesMafia IIISavesvideoconfig.cfg. Exit the game and back up the file before any manual edit. Normal adjustments should begin in the in-game menu.
What are Mafia III’s posted PC requirements?
2K lists Windows 7 64-bit, an i5-2500K, 6 GB RAM, a Radeon HD 7870 or GTX 660 with 2 GB video memory, and 50 GB free space as minimum. Its recommended tier lists an i7-3770, 8 GB RAM, a Radeon R9 290X or GTX 780 with 4 GB video memory, and the same 50 GB storage. 2K also says Intel HD 5500 and earlier integrated graphics do not meet minimum requirements.
The Bottom Line
Use Options > Display in Mafia III to choose 30, 60 or unlimited FPS. For slowdowns, test Volumetric Effects and Reflection Quality first, change one control at a time, and judge the result in the same demanding scene. The 2K requirements and older performance reports are useful baselines, but your own PC determines the final cap and settings.
