How DayZ’s loot timer works
DayZ’s Central Economy (CE) continuously tracks loot on the server. It reads mission economy files such as types.xml, globals.xml, and other CE definitions, then cleans up entities and attempts to maintain configured populations.
There are two different timing questions:
- When does an existing item disappear? Its applicable lifetime and cleanup rules answer this.
- When does a replacement appear? The item’s population targets and restock delay answer this.
Increasing a lifetime can keep an untouched item in the world longer, but it does not force a replacement to spawn immediately after the item is taken. Conversely, changing restock does not make an existing item remain longer.

Before changing any mission XML
- Stop the server, or make a complete backup before editing mission files.
- Identify the mission that the running server actually uses. A typical path is
mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus/, but the map and mission name can differ. - Keep a copy of the original XML so you can restore it if the server fails to load the economy.
- Use a text editor that preserves plain UTF-8 text and does not add formatting characters.
Editing a template, an unused map directory, or a local copy does nothing to the live server. The active mission folder is the one that matters.
Change one item’s lifetime in types.xml
Use a per-item setting when only one class, such as a weapon, tool, medical item, or food item, needs a different cleanup period.
- Stop the server or take the backup described above.
- Open the active mission folder, then open
db/types.xml. - Search for the exact class entry, written as
<type name="ClassName">. ReplaceClassNamewith the item class you intend to change. - Find that entry’s
<lifetime>element. The value is measured in seconds. - Replace the number while leaving the surrounding XML structure and required tags intact.
- Save the file, validate that the XML remains well formed, and restart the server.
A representative entry looks like this:
<type name="ExampleItem">
<nominal>20</nominal>
<min>10</min>
<lifetime>7200</lifetime>
<restock>0</restock>
<flags count_in_cargo="1" count_in_hoarder="1" count_in_map="1" count_in_player="1" crafted="0" deloot="0" />
</type>
The 7200 number in this example represents 7,200 seconds for that example class; it is not a universal DayZ default. Use the number of seconds appropriate for your server’s design.
Change the global cleanup fallback in globals.xml
Use the global file when you need to change the default applied to categories or classes that do not provide a more specific lifetime.
- Open the same active mission folder.
- Open
db/globals.xml. - Under
<variables>, locate the relevant<var>entry. - Change the value for the cleanup variable you need, preserving its name and XML syntax.
- Save, validate, and restart the server so the mission configuration is read again.
The documented vanilla values are:
| Variable | What it cleans up | Documented value |
|---|---|---|
CleanupLifetimeDefault |
Global default cleanup lifetime when no more specific lifetime applies | 45 seconds, documented by the Bohemia Interactive Community reference |
CleanupLifetimeRuined |
Ruined objects | 330 seconds, documented by the Bohemia Interactive Community reference |
CleanupLifetimeDeadInfected |
Dead infected | 330 seconds, documented by the StarDZ Team technical reference |
CleanupLifetimeDeadPlayer |
Dead players | 3,600 seconds, documented by the StarDZ Team technical reference |
The 45-second CleanupLifetimeDefault value explains why an item that lacks an explicit lifetime can appear to vanish very quickly. A class with its own <lifetime> entry can use that specific value instead of the global fallback.
What each types.xml field controls
| Field | Purpose | What changing it does not do |
|---|---|---|
lifetime |
How long an untouched item may remain before CE cleanup, in seconds | It does not set the replacement spawn delay |
nominal |
The target population of copies the economy tries to maintain | It does not guarantee that exact number is present at every moment |
min |
The population threshold at which CE attempts to replenish the item | It does not override lifetime cleanup |
restock |
The minimum delay before a replacement can be spawned after removal or taking | It does not keep an existing item from being cleaned up |
flags |
Whether copies in cargo, hoards, the map, or player inventories count toward economy totals | It does not itself define a despawn duration |
Because these fields interact, changing only one can produce an outcome that seems unrelated to the edit. For example, a long lifetime can leave many untouched copies in the world while a high min or long restock still delays replacements after players take items.

Despawn, cleanup, and respawn are separate events
Cleanup of an existing entity
Despawn in this context is CE cleanup of an entity that has met its applicable lifetime condition. The item already exists; the timer determines when it becomes eligible for removal.
Removal by a player
Taking an item, moving it, or otherwise interacting with it is not the same event as passive cleanup. CE behavior references indicate that persistent objects that are regularly used generally do not automatically despawn merely because a player walks away.

Replacement after the population falls
After an item is removed or no longer counts toward the configured population, CE evaluates the class against nominal, min, restock, usage and category definitions, and its counting flags. A replacement is an economy decision made on later processing cycles; it is not guaranteed to appear at the exact second an item disappears.
Per-item versus global changes
| Use case | File | Scope | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| One item or class needs a longer or shorter lifetime | db/types.xml |
Only the matching <type> entry |
Editing the wrong class name or duplicate entry |
| Classes without explicit lifetimes need a different fallback | db/globals.xml |
Global default for applicable objects | Changing cleanup for far more objects than intended |
| A mod supplies its own economy definitions | Mod and mission CE registration files | Definitions registered through the economy core | Conflicting duplicate definitions or an unregistered file |
Start with a per-item edit when your complaint concerns one class. Use the global fallback only when you deliberately want broad behavior across classes that inherit it.
How to tune common server goals
“Items disappear before players can reach them”
Find the affected class in db/types.xml and increase its <lifetime> in seconds. Then restart and observe the class under normal player activity. If the entry has no lifetime, inspect CleanupLifetimeDefault before changing every item globally.
“I want a clean, fast-moving loot economy”
Keep lifetimes appropriate for the intended amount of world clutter, then tune nominal, min, and restock separately. A short lifetime removes untouched items; it does not by itself create a faster supply of replacements.
“Players take an item, but another one does not appear immediately”
Check the class’s min and restock values, then verify that the relevant usage and category tags allow the item to spawn in that location. Confirm that the flags are counting or excluding copies as intended. CE processes replacements continuously, so the next spawn can occur on a later cycle rather than instantly.
“I need one rule for all unmodified classes”
Change CleanupLifetimeDefault in db/globals.xml, but first determine which classes already define their own lifetimes. A global fallback will not necessarily override a more specific per-item value.

Reading and comparing lifetime values
Every lifetime number is expressed in seconds, so convert the value before deciding whether it matches your intended player experience. For example, 300 seconds is five minutes, 1,800 seconds is 30 minutes, 3,600 seconds is one hour, and 7,200 seconds is two hours. These conversions do not change how CE works; they simply make it easier to compare an XML value with an observed play-session interval.
Compare like with like when evaluating two configurations. A per-item value in types.xml has narrower scope than a global value in globals.xml. A cleanup lifetime applies to an existing, untouched entity, while restock applies to the delay before a replacement can be spawned. An active server and an empty server are also different conditions because idle mode can change processing. Finally, vanilla definitions and a mod’s registered CE file may not be the same authority.

A controlled way to test a change
- Record the class name, original lifetime, nominal, min, restock, and relevant flags before editing.
- Change only the lifetime when testing cleanup. Leaving population fields unchanged makes it easier to attribute the result to the intended edit.
- Restart the server after saving the XML, since the mission configuration is loaded again during startup.
- Observe an untouched copy while players are present, and note when it becomes eligible for cleanup. Do not use a moved, stored, or regularly used object as an equivalent test case.
- For replacement testing, remove or take an item and then monitor the same class through later CE cycles. Record whether the population is below
min, whetherrestockhas elapsed, and whether usage and category tags permit a spawn. - Repeat the observation rather than treating one exact timestamp as a guarantee. CE runs as a server-side process, and a server with no players can enter idle mode after the documented 60-second
IdleModeCountdown.
This method separates passive cleanup from replacement behavior and helps expose an override or wrong mission path without changing several variables at once.
Modded servers and CE registration
A mod may provide its own Central Economy file instead of relying only on the vanilla mission definitions. Do not create a second competing definition simply because you cannot find the value in the base file.
The official CE reference describes cfgEconomyCore.xml as a configuration file located in the mission directory and used for CE class and file registration. If a mod supplies a CE file, register it through the mission’s economy-core configuration according to that mod’s instructions. Keep one authoritative definition for each class and avoid duplicate registrations.
After adding or changing a registered file, restart the server and inspect the available CE or server logs if logging is enabled. A syntactically valid file that is not registered will have no effect; a duplicate or malformed definition can prevent the intended economy data from loading.
Why a timing test can be misleading
Empty-server idle mode
IdleModeCountdown is documented as 60 seconds. When no players are present, the economy can enter idle mode. A stopwatch measurement made while the server is empty may therefore differ from an observation made while players are active.
Interaction changes behavior
An untouched object and an object that players regularly use are not equivalent test cases. If an item was moved, used, or stored, do not assume that simply walking away starts the same passive-cleanup behavior as an untouched item.
Processing is not an exact instant
Lifetime makes an entity eligible for cleanup; CE still performs its work as a server-side economy process. Replacement decisions happen on subsequent cycles, so use repeated observations under the same player and server conditions rather than treating one exact timestamp as a guarantee.
Troubleshoot changes that do not work
The item disappears almost immediately
- Check whether the class lacks an explicit
<lifetime>and is inheriting the documented 45-secondCleanupLifetimeDefault. - Confirm that another mission or mod file is not supplying an override.
- Verify that you edited the active mission rather than a template or inactive map folder.
Loot never returns
- Review
nominal, min, andrestocktogether. - Check that the item has valid
usageandcategorydefinitions for the locations being tested. - Inspect the
flagsvalues to see whether copies in cargo, hoards, the map, or player inventory are counted. - Allow for later CE processing instead of expecting an immediate replacement.
The edit appears to have no effect
- Confirm the exact class name and the active mission path.
- Validate XML syntax and make sure required tags were not deleted or incorrectly nested.
- Restart the server after saving; mission XML is read during configuration loading.
- Check CE logs when logging has been enabled through the economy-core configuration.
- Look for a mod-provided CE file or duplicate registration that supersedes the value you changed.
The server fails to load the economy
- Stop the server and restore the backed-up XML.
- Compare the edited file with the original to find an unclosed tag, missing quote, or damaged attribute.
- Reapply one change at a time, validating and restarting after each change.
Verification checklist
- Back up the active mission before editing.
- Choose
db/types.xmlfor a specific class ordb/globals.xmlfor a fallback default. - Confirm that every lifetime number is expressed in seconds.
- Leave
nominal, min, restock, usage, category, and flags unchanged unless you also intend to tune population behavior. - Preserve all required XML tags and attributes.
- Check whether a mod registers an alternative CE file through
cfgEconomyCore.xml. - Restart the server.
- Test with players present if you are measuring normal live-server timing, because an empty server can enter idle mode.
- Compare untouched items with interacted or stored items; they may not follow identical cleanup behavior.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the DayZ loot despawn timer?
For a specific class, it is the <lifetime> value in that class’s db/types.xml entry. For classes without a specific value, check CleanupLifetimeDefault in db/globals.xml.

What is the difference between lifetime and restock?
lifetime controls how long an existing, generally untouched entity may remain before cleanup. restock is a minimum delay before CE can spawn a replacement after removal or taking. They answer different timing questions.
Why did my item vanish in less than a minute?
If the class has no explicit lifetime, it may be inheriting the documented 45-second CleanupLifetimeDefault. An override or an edit to the wrong mission can produce the same symptom.
Will increasing lifetime make loot respawn faster?
No. Increasing lifetime keeps existing untouched copies eligible for cleanup for longer. Replacement depends on nominal, min, restock, tags, flags, and later CE processing.
Does walking away from an item start a guaranteed despawn countdown?
No. Persistent objects that are regularly used generally do not automatically despawn merely because a player leaves. Test untouched and interacted-with objects separately.
Why does loot behave differently when nobody is online?
The documented IdleModeCountdown is 60 seconds, and CE can enter idle mode with no players. Empty-server timing is therefore not necessarily the same as active-server timing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How do I change cleanup for ruined objects or dead players?
Use the corresponding global variables in db/globals.xml. The documented values are 330 seconds for CleanupLifetimeRuined, 330 seconds for CleanupLifetimeDeadInfected, and 3,600 seconds for CleanupLifetimeDeadPlayer.
What if a mod has its own types or globals file?
Follow the mod’s CE instructions and register its file through cfgEconomyCore.xml in the mission folder. Avoid duplicate class or file definitions, then restart and inspect CE logs if enabled.
The practical rule
For a single loot class, edit its <lifetime> in the active mission’s db/types.xml. For classes using the fallback, edit CleanupLifetimeDefault in db/globals.xml. Treat lifetime as cleanup timing only; use nominal, min, restock, tags, and flags to control whether and when replacement loot is produced.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change loot lifetime for one item?
Edit that class’s <lifetime> value in the active mission’s db/types.xml. Values are seconds; save a backup, validate the XML, and restart the server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhere is the global DayZ despawn timer?
Open db/globals.xml and locate CleanupLifetimeDefault under <variables>. It applies where no more specific lifetime is defined.
Why does changing lifetime not make replacement loot appear sooner?
Lifetime governs cleanup of an existing entity. Replacement uses nominal, min, restock, usage and category tags, flags, and later CE processing cycles.
What is the documented default cleanup lifetime?
CleanupLifetimeDefault is documented as 45 seconds. Classes with an explicit <lifetime> can use their own value instead.
Can an empty server change my timing test?
Yes. With no players, CE can enter idle mode; IdleModeCountdown is documented as 60 seconds. Test normal timing with players present.
What should I check if my edit has no effect?
Confirm the active mission path and exact class name, validate XML, restart the server, and check for mod-provided or duplicate CE registrations.
The Bottom Line
Edit types.xml for one class, or globals.xml for a fallback cleanup rule. Lifetime is measured in seconds and controls cleanup, not respawn; use nominal, min, restock, tags, and flags for replacement behavior.
