DayZ controls an item’s condition when it is created by using the healthMin and healthMax attributes. Both values use a decimal scale from 0.0 (ruined) to 1.0 (pristine). Set both to the same number for a predictable condition, or use a range to let the server choose a random health value for each newly spawned item.
Godlike.Host offers hosted DayZ servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
This is a spawn-time setting, not a documented universal durability multiplier. It will not automatically repair or recondition objects that are already saved in the world. Those items require a compatible server-side mod or script, replacement, or a remove-and-respawn workflow.

What the health settings actually change
DayZ’s item-health attributes determine the condition assigned when an item is created or spawned. They do not represent a percentage bonus to an item’s maximum durability, and they do not accelerate wear during use.
| Setting | Meaning | Example result |
|---|---|---|
healthMin |
Lowest health value the engine may assign at spawn | 0.45 allows an item to be created at 45% health or higher |
healthMax |
Highest health value the engine may assign at spawn | 0.65 prevents that spawn from exceeding 65% health |
0.0 |
Ruined | The item starts ruined and may be unusable |
1.0 |
Pristine | The item starts in pristine condition |
When the minimum and maximum differ, the engine selects a health value somewhere inside that interval. A range of 0.45 to 0.65 therefore produces items from worn to damaged rather than one fixed condition. When both values are identical, every newly created item receives that exact health value; healthMin: 0.80 and healthMax: 0.80 produce deterministic 80% health.

These fields apply to the item being created. They do not change the separate quantity system used by magazines, food, drinks, ammunition, or other stackable and consumable objects. Quantity determines how much is inside an object; health determines its physical condition.
Which DayZ file should you edit?
DayZ server configuration is divided by responsibility. Choosing the wrong file can leave a perfectly valid edit with no effect.

Item definitions in CfgVehicles |
Classnames and the available configuration properties for items | Use this to identify the correct classname before editing a spawn configuration |
| Spawnable-gear configuration in the mission files | Per-item attributes applied when gear is spawned | Yes. Add or edit the item’s attributes block here |
cfggameplay.json |
Gameplay tuning exposed through the mission configuration | Use it only when the relevant setting is defined there; the file must be activated |
types.xml |
Economy rules such as nominal quantities, restock behavior, lifetime, and spawn locations | No documented healthMin/healthMax health range belongs here |
globals.xml |
Economy-wide limits and cleanup or persistence parameters | No. Its timers and limits do not set an item’s durability |
config.cpp and server scripts |
Hardcoded or scripted behavior for systems not exposed in the mission files | Possibly, when a mechanic is owned by code rather than a mission setting |
The exact mission subfolder depends on the server’s map and configuration layout, so locate the spawnable-gear entry used by your mission rather than copying an edit into an unrelated XML file.
Step-by-step: set health for newly spawned items
1. Stop the server and make a backup
Stop the DayZ server before editing mission files. Copy the complete mission folder, including the files you intend to change, to a separate backup location. This protects the working configuration if a restart reports a parse error or if the result is not what you intended.
2. Identify the item’s classname
Find the item’s classname in its CfgVehicles definition. The classname is the internal identifier used by the economy and spawn configuration; it is not always the same as the name shown in the inventory.

Apply the health attributes to that exact classname. A typo, a display name, or a classname from a different item will either affect nothing or affect a different object.
3. Open the item’s spawnable-gear entry
In the server mission files, locate the spawnable-gear configuration for the item. Add an attributes object if one does not exist, or edit the existing health fields inside it.
"attributes": {
"healthMin": 0.45,
"healthMax": 0.65
}
The numbers must be floating-point values between 0.0 and 1.0. Keep the surrounding JSON structure, commas, quotation marks, and braces valid for the file you are editing.
4. Choose the condition range
Use a fixed value when every spawn should have the same condition, or use a minimum and maximum to create variability.
| Goal | healthMin |
healthMax |
Spawn behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Always pristine | 1.0 |
1.0 |
Every newly created item starts pristine |
| Always 80% condition | 0.80 |
0.80 |
Every newly created item receives the same 80% health value |
| Mostly good, with variation | 0.70 |
1.0 |
New items spawn between 70% and pristine |
| Worn-to-damaged loot | 0.45 |
0.65 |
New items spawn randomly in that interval |
| Ruined-only test spawns | 0.0 |
0.0 |
New items start ruined |
Do not set a minimum above the maximum. Keep the values within the documented 0.0–1.0 range.

5. Enable cfggameplay.json when that file is involved
If your health edit is in cfggameplay.json, copy the file into the mission folder and set the following line in serverDZ.cfg:
enableCfgGameplayFile = 1;
Without that activation flag, the server uses its defaults instead of the mission copy. The flag is relevant only when you are using the gameplay configuration file; it does not turn unrelated XML files into gameplay overrides.
6. Validate, restart, and test a fresh spawn
Check the JSON or XML syntax before starting the server. A syntactically valid file can still be ignored if it is in the wrong mission path, uses the wrong classname, or places the field under a configuration owner that does not support it.
Restart the server after saving the files. Test with an item that is newly spawned or newly created after the change. Inspecting an object that was already persisted before the restart cannot confirm a spawn-time health edit.
How to make common loot patterns
Make a particular item spawn pristine
Set both attributes to 1.0 in that item’s spawnable-gear entry:
"attributes": {
"healthMin": 1.0,
"healthMax": 1.0
}
This affects future creations of that classname. It does not repair copies already stored in player inventories, tents, barrels, vehicles, or other persistent containers.
Allow realistic variation
Use a bounded interval such as 0.70 to 1.0 when you want good equipment without making every spawn identical. The engine chooses a value in the interval for each new item.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Make equipment consistently worn
Use a narrower lower range, such as 0.45 to 0.65, for equipment that should enter the economy in worn-to-damaged condition. This controls the starting condition only; later use can still change the item’s health through normal game mechanics.
Use a fixed test condition
Set equal values when testing a trader, loot route, or scripted event. A fixed value removes random variation and makes it easier to verify whether another system is changing the item after creation.
What these settings do not do
They do not repair existing objects
The documented spawn attributes are applied during item creation. There is no documented vanilla switch that retroactively changes the health of every already-persisted object. If the requirement is to repair existing loot, use a compatible server-side mod or script that exposes item-health mutation, replace the objects, or remove and respawn them through an appropriate server workflow.
They do not create a universal durability multiplier
Changing healthMin and healthMax does not make every item lose health faster or slower during use. A request such as “make every item degrade 25% faster” needs a mechanic-specific setting if one exists, or a mod/script that changes the relevant wear behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThey do not control cleanup or persistence
types.xml lifetimes and globals.xml cleanup parameters govern economy behavior, limits, and persistence. They do not set the health range assigned when an item spawns. Changing a lifetime will not turn a damaged item into a pristine one.
They do not replace quantity settings
For magazines and consumables, quantity ranges control contents such as ammunition or remaining uses. Keep those fields separate from the item’s health attributes.

The server starts, but new items still have default condition
- Confirm that the edited file is inside the active mission folder, not a local copy or an unused map mission.
- Check that the classname exactly matches the item’s
CfgVehiclesidentifier. - If the edit is in
cfggameplay.json, verify thatenableCfgGameplayFile = 1;is present inserverDZ.cfg. - Make sure
healthMinandhealthMaxare nested inside the correct item’sattributesobject. - Confirm that you are testing a newly created item rather than one loaded from persistence.
The server refuses to load the mission
- Restore the backup to confirm that the edit is the cause.
- Check every comma, brace, quotation mark, and decimal value in the JSON.
- Ensure the values are numeric, not quoted strings such as
"0.80", when the configuration expects numbers. - Validate the entire file rather than only the lines you changed.
The item is still damaged after changing the spawn range
- Verify that the object was not already saved before the change.
- Check whether another configuration or script modifies health after creation.
- Confirm that the field belongs to the configuration owner you edited; some behavior is hardcoded or implemented in
config.cppor scripts. - Do not expect changes to
types.xmlorglobals.xmlto override the documented health attributes.
Only some items change
Health is configured per item entry. A successful edit for one classname does not apply to every weapon, clothing item, tool, or container. Add the attributes to each required classname, and check that each entry uses the same valid structure.
A practical verification checklist
- Write down the exact classname from
CfgVehicles. - Back up the active mission folder.
- Stop the server before editing.
- Open the spawnable-gear entry for that classname.
- Add or edit
healthMinandhealthMaxinsideattributes. - Keep both values between
0.0and1.0. - Enable
cfggameplay.jsonwithenableCfgGameplayFile = 1;when that file is used. - Validate the complete file.
- Restart the server.
- Test a newly spawned item and record its condition.
- If the result is unchanged, check the mission path, classname, persistence state, and configuration owner before changing another file.
Choosing the right solution for your goal
| Your goal | Appropriate approach | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Make one class spawn pristine | Set that class’s minimum and maximum to 1.0 |
Future spawns are pristine; existing copies are unchanged |
| Give one class a condition range | Set different values, such as 0.45 and 0.65 |
Each new item receives a value within the interval |
| Set every existing item to a new health value | Use a compatible health-editing mod or script, or replace and respawn objects | Spawn attributes alone are not documented to perform this retroactive change |
| Make items degrade faster during use | Find a mechanic-specific setting or use a mod/script that changes wear behavior | healthMin/healthMax affect starting condition only |
| Change how long loot remains or how much exists | Edit the appropriate economy settings in types.xml or globals.xml |
These settings affect economy behavior, not the documented spawn-health range |
The reliable vanilla workflow is therefore per-item and spawn-focused: identify the classname, set a valid health range in the item’s spawn configuration, activate cfggameplay.json when applicable, and test a fresh item after restarting the server. Broader or retroactive durability changes require a separate scripted or modded mechanism.
