Start a route in Google Maps on your Android Auto screen, then tap Settings. That in-car menu contains the route choices, traffic display, and map-display options available for your vehicle. When the car is parked, you can also change many Google Maps navigation settings in the phone app. The exact controls can vary by car, Android Auto version, country, and phone performance.
Where Google Maps settings are in Android Auto
Google Maps exposes its Android Auto controls after navigation has started. Connect your compatible Android phone, open Google Maps on the car display, choose a destination, and begin turn-by-turn guidance. During that active route, tap Settings on the Maps screen. Google describes this menu as the place to adjust route options, display options, and related navigation controls.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The important distinction is that the Settings control belongs to the active navigation view. If you are only looking at the Android Auto app launcher or a map before starting a route, the same collection of choices may not be visible. Start guidance first, then look for the Maps Settings control.
The car-screen menu is not guaranteed to look identical in every vehicle. Automakers can support different displays, touch controls, steering-wheel buttons, and vehicle integrations. If a control shown in Google’s instructions is missing, consult the vehicle manufacturer’s Android Auto compatibility information rather than assuming the phone or Maps account is defective.

Change route and display options from the car screen
- Put the vehicle in a safe position and connect your Android phone to Android Auto.
- On the car display, open Google Maps.
- Search for a destination and start navigation.
- Tap Settings in the Maps navigation interface.
- Choose the route or display option you want, if it is offered for your vehicle and region.
This is the shortest path for changes that Android Auto makes available in the car. It also gives you a useful way to tell whether you are changing a Google Maps setting or a general Android Auto setting: route and map choices appear within the active Maps navigation screen, while broader interface and accessibility controls are handled elsewhere.
Some destination-entry actions are deliberately restricted while driving. Google says typing a destination on the car screen requires the vehicle to be in Park. That lockout applies to entering a destination; it is separate from changing map settings during a route. Use voice input or stop safely before entering text.
What the in-car Settings menu can and cannot change
Google describes the menu broadly as a place for route options, display options, and more. The exact list depends on the Android Auto and vehicle setup. A route option changes how Maps handles the current navigation choices; a display option changes what is drawn or shown on the map. These are different from phone accessibility settings, the car’s audio controls, and incident-reporting features.
Do not expect every phone-side Google Maps preference to become a large button on the car display. The in-car interface is designed for driving, so it exposes a focused set of controls and can restrict text entry. Conversely, a vehicle may supply controls through a rotary dial, steering-wheel buttons, or another interface that is not present on a different car. The safest approach is to identify the setting you need, then use the menu where Google documents it.
Turn traffic colors on or off
Traffic display is controlled directly in Android Auto while a route is running:
- Start Google Maps navigation on the Android Auto display.
- Tap Settings.
- Select Traffic.
- Turn the traffic display on or off.
When traffic is available, Google Maps uses colored conditions on highways and roads. The colors represent the traffic information Google can obtain for that area; a road without color is not proof that it is clear, because coverage and data availability vary. If you see little or no coloring, first confirm that the Traffic switch is enabled, then consider whether information is available for that road.
The toggle controls the visual traffic layer. It does not promise that Maps will have a traffic estimate for every street, and it does not create information where Google has none. The setting is therefore useful for controlling map clutter or visibility, but it cannot improve local coverage.

Change settings in Google Maps on your phone while parked
If a setting is easier to find on the phone, park first and open the Google Maps app. Google permits users to adjust navigation settings there while the vehicle is parked. Making a change on the phone can be more convenient than reaching through a car-specific Android Auto interface, but do not operate the phone while moving.

Phone-side settings and Android Auto settings overlap, but they are not the same control panel. A setting documented for the Maps app may not appear as a button on the car screen, and a vehicle-integrated control may be available only while Android Auto is active. Before searching through menus, decide whether you are changing map detail, traffic visibility, a route choice, or the overall Android Auto interface.
Using the parked phone app is also the appropriate workaround when the car screen prevents text entry or when a setting requires several nested menus. Make the adjustment before pulling away, reconnect Android Auto if needed, and then verify the result from the active route view.

Enable 3D map details
Google documents the 3D map-detail control in the Android version of Google Maps. With the vehicle parked, use this path:
- Open Google Maps on your Android phone.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Navigation.
- Tap Map display.
- Under Map detail, turn on 3D.
Google says 3D map details are shown during active driving navigation on both the phone and Android Auto. This setting changes map detail, not the route selected by Maps, the traffic-color switch, or the vehicle’s audio volume. If your goal is to see three-dimensional map information, this is the relevant control; changing the Android Auto theme or phone text style will not substitute for it.
Three-dimensional rendering needs additional phone resources. If the phone overheats, loses connection, or otherwise has performance problems, Google Maps may switch 3D navigation to 2D for the remainder of that drive. Google says 3D can return on the next drive after performance recovers. A temporary 2D map therefore does not necessarily mean that the 3D preference was erased.
When troubleshooting, distinguish a preference problem from a performance fallback. If the 3D switch is still enabled but the current route is flat, the phone may simply be protecting performance for that drive. Let the device cool, restore a stable Android Auto connection, and check again on a later trip rather than repeatedly changing unrelated display settings.

Distinguish Maps display controls from Android Auto accessibility
Not every visual change belongs to Google Maps. Android Auto also provides accessibility and interface options that affect the overall car-screen experience:
- Dark theme: an Android Auto interface option that changes the general appearance of supported screens.
- Voice control: hands-free commands can use Gemini or Google Assistant, depending on what is available on the phone and account.
- Phone text options: Android accessibility settings can provide bold text, outlined text, or reduced animation. These affect the phone and supported interfaces, not necessarily every map element.
Changing an Android Auto theme will not turn on traffic colors, and enabling bold text will not create 3D buildings. Use the Maps settings for route and map-detail behavior; use Android or Android Auto accessibility settings for broader readability and interaction changes.
Voice control is especially useful when the car screen restricts typing. It does not eliminate the need to keep attention on the road, and availability can depend on the phone, account, and vehicle setup. If a voice command is unavailable, use the car’s supported controls or stop safely before making a phone-side change.

Control navigation, media, and voice volume
Volume behavior is partly vehicle-specific. In some cars, navigation prompts, media playback, and voice-assistant responses have separate volume levels. Adjusting music volume may not change spoken turn instructions.
To set the correct level, wait for the type of audio you want to change—a spoken navigation instruction, assistant response, or media track—and use the vehicle’s volume control while that audio is playing. If the car exposes separate menus or a dedicated setting, follow the vehicle owner’s manual. Google directs drivers to the manufacturer’s documentation for those controls because Android Auto cannot standardize every vehicle’s audio implementation.
This distinction helps diagnose a common false alarm: a driver raises media volume and expects the next navigation prompt to be louder, but the vehicle stores those levels independently. Test each audio category separately and change the category that is actually too quiet.
What to do when a setting is missing
The Settings button does not appear
- Confirm that Google Maps navigation is actually active; the route settings menu is presented in the navigation view.
- Check that Android Auto is connected and that the car display is showing the Android Auto version of Maps rather than a different built-in navigation system.
- Stop in a safe place and check the phone app, where Google provides additional navigation settings.
If the menu still differs, compare the vehicle’s supported Android Auto controls with the instructions for your car. A different screen layout or input method can change where a control appears without indicating that Maps is malfunctioning.
Traffic colors do not show
- Open the in-car path Settings > Traffic and verify that the switch is enabled.
- Allow for the possibility that traffic data is unavailable on that road or in that location.
- Do not confuse the traffic layer with incident reporting; those features can have different country and compatibility limits.
Turning the layer on cannot guarantee colors on every road. The display depends on traffic information being available, so an apparently unchanged map may reflect coverage rather than a failed toggle.

- Check whether the phone is hot, under heavy load, or repeatedly losing its Android Auto connection.
- Let the phone cool and restore a stable connection before the next drive.
- Verify the phone-side path profile picture or initial > Settings > Navigation > Map display > Map detail > 3D while parked.
Google’s documented behavior allows a temporary 2D fallback for the rest of the current drive when performance is impaired. It may automatically use 3D again on a later drive.
Voice commands or spoken directions are too quiet
Raise the volume while the navigation prompt or voice response is actively playing. If only one audio category changes, the vehicle probably separates navigation, media, and assistant volume. Use the car’s manual for the exact control rather than repeatedly changing the phone’s media volume.
The car display has different controls than a tutorial
Android Auto capabilities vary by vehicle. Touchscreen layouts, rotary controllers, steering-wheel buttons, supported accessibility options, and display features can differ. Google directs users to their vehicle manufacturer for compatibility details. A missing control can therefore be a vehicle-support difference rather than an installation error.
Android Auto does not connect reliably
First establish the connection before troubleshooting a map setting. Android Auto is integrated into compatible Android phones. Supported vehicles and phones can use wireless Android Auto; wired setups may require a high-quality USB cable. A connection problem can prevent Google Maps from appearing on the car display, but changing the cable or connection method cannot add a map option that the vehicle does not support.

Safety and compatibility limits to keep in mind
- Park before typing: destination typing on the car screen is restricted to Park. Use voice commands or stop before entering text.
- Use the phone only while parked: phone-side Maps settings are intended for adjustment before driving or after stopping.
- Expect vehicle variation: the available Android Auto display and controls depend on the car and its supported integration.
- Expect regional variation: traffic information and incident features are not available everywhere.
- Expect performance fallbacks: heat, connection loss, or other phone problems can temporarily reduce map detail from 3D to 2D.
Android Auto itself is integrated into compatible Android phones. Wired connections may require a high-quality USB cable, while supported vehicles and phones can use wireless Android Auto. Connection setup affects whether Maps appears on the car display, but it does not add map settings that the vehicle does not support.

- While parked, open Google Maps on the phone and set the preferred 3D map detail through Settings > Navigation > Map display > Map detail.
- Connect the phone to Android Auto and open Google Maps on the car screen.
- Start a route, open Settings, and enable or disable Traffic as needed.
- Test a spoken navigation prompt and adjust the vehicle’s navigation volume separately from media volume if necessary.
- Use Android Auto’s voice control or a safe stop for later changes instead of typing while moving.
This sequence separates the settings that belong in the phone app from those exposed during active in-car navigation, reducing the chance of looking for a Maps option in the wrong menu. It also lets you identify connection, volume, and performance issues before they become distractions on the road.

Frequently asked questions
Can I change Google Maps settings without starting navigation?
The documented Android Auto Settings menu is available while Google Maps navigation is active. For settings that are easier to reach outside that view, park and use the Google Maps phone app.
Why can’t I type a destination on the Android Auto screen?
Google restricts destination typing on the car screen unless the vehicle is in Park. This is a safety lockout, not a Maps display-setting error. Use voice input or stop before typing.
Recommended Free Tools
Does turning on Traffic show every accident or hazard?
No. Traffic colors and incident reports or alerts are separate features. Traffic colors depend on available traffic information, while incident features can have their own country and compatibility limits.
Where is the 3D setting?
On the parked Android phone, open your profile picture or initial, then Settings > Navigation > Map display > Map detail > 3D. Google says the resulting 3D map details can appear during active navigation on the phone and Android Auto.
Why did my 3D map become 2D during a trip?
Google Maps can switch to 2D for the remainder of that drive if the phone overheats, loses its connection, or has another performance problem. After performance recovers, 3D may return on a later drive.
Why is the navigation voice still quiet after I raise the volume?
Your vehicle may separate navigation, media, and assistant volume. Adjust the volume while the spoken navigation prompt or assistant response is playing, and consult the vehicle owner’s manual for separate controls.
Can I use Android Auto’s dark theme to improve the Maps traffic display?
Dark theme changes the general Android Auto interface. It does not turn traffic colors on and does not enable 3D map details. Use Maps Settings for those functions.
Best Value
Are the same controls available in every car?
No. Displays, touch controls, steering-wheel inputs, accessibility support, and other Android Auto capabilities vary. Google recommends checking the vehicle manufacturer’s compatibility information when a documented control is missing.
Bottom line
For Google Maps in Android Auto, start navigation and tap Settings on the car display. Use Settings > Traffic for the colored traffic layer, and use the parked phone app for the documented 3D path: Settings > Navigation > Map display > Map detail > 3D. Keep Maps controls separate from Android Auto accessibility settings and vehicle-specific volume controls. If a menu is missing or 3D temporarily becomes 2D, check vehicle support, regional availability, connection stability, and phone performance before assuming the preference was lost.
