To change Google Assistant’s language, open the Assistant language settings for the device you use: Google Home on Android, the Google Assistant app on iPhone or iPad, or Assistant settings in Google Home for a Nest speaker or display. The exact labels can vary with the device setup, and not every language is available on every device or in every region.

Change Google Assistant language on Android

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. At the bottom right, tap Explore & Your stuff.
  3. Tap your profile picture or initial at the top right.
  4. Tap Settings → Assistant → Languages.
  5. Tap the current language to replace the primary language, or tap Add a language to add one.

Google says an Android device can use its device language plus up to two Assistant languages. You can speak to Assistant in either selected Assistant language, but you cannot mix them in the same phrase. Some features are unavailable in some languages. Google also notes that Marathi, Bangla, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Urdu, Gujarati, or Kannada may require setting the preferred language as the primary language. Google’s Android language instructions list the supported options and details.

Change Google Assistant language on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Google Assistant app.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial at the top right.
  3. Tap Assistant → Languages.
  4. Tap the current language to replace it, or tap Add a language to add another.

On iPhone or iPad, Google describes support for the iOS device language plus up to two Assistant languages. Assistant responds in the language you use, but you cannot mix the selected languages in one phrase. Google says Assistant speaks the language set in iOS; you can choose a different language in Assistant settings. If iOS has no default language, Assistant uses the device default when that language is supported. See Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions.

Change the language on a Nest or Google Home speaker or display

  1. Open Google Home and tap your profile picture or initial.
  2. Tap Assistant settings → Assistant → Languages. Depending on your setup, Google Home may instead show Home settings → Gemini for Home voice assistant or Google Assistant → Languages.
  3. Tap the current language to change it, or add another if the option is available.

Your phone or tablet should be on the same Wi-Fi network as the speaker or display, or linked to the same Google account. A language change can affect all Nest and Home devices linked to that account. Google says the Home admin’s primary language takes precedence, and device and regional support can differ. For a shared speaker, Google recommends Voice Match to help it recognize each person and respond in that person’s preferred language. Check Google’s guidance for changing a Nest or Home voice assistant’s language for the current settings route and availability details.

If the language you want is missing

  • Check the instructions for your specific device type; phone, speaker, wearable, clock, and TV language lists are not identical.
  • Check whether the language is supported in your country or region and on your device. A missing choice can reflect availability rather than a problem with the steps.
  • On a phone, check whether the language needs to be set as the primary Assistant language; this may apply to the languages Google identifies in its Android instructions.
  • For a shared Nest or Home speaker, check the Home admin’s primary language and whether Voice Match is configured for household members.
