Change Discord’s appearance using its built-in User Settings > Appearance controls rather than a third-party client or theme injector. Desktop and mobile provide different theme choices, while Discord’s custom-color controls are documented for Nitro subscribers and may not appear on every client.
Change Discord’s theme on desktop
- Open Discord and select the gear icon to open User Settings.
- Select Appearance.
- Choose an available built-in theme: Light, Ash, Dark, Onyx, or Sync with computer.
Discord also documents custom-color theme controls for Nitro subscribers. If they’re available in your Appearance settings, you can choose a light or dark palette, pick colors or enter hex values, use gradients with up to five colors, and adjust gradient direction and intensity. Change Discord’s theme on mobile
- Tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap the gear icon in the upper-right corner to open Settings.
- Scroll to Appearance.
- Choose Light, Dark, Midnight, or Automatic.
Automatic follows your device’s appearance setting. Discord also documents a Sync across clients option: a theme selected on desktop can sync to desktop, mobile, and browser, but it may look different between them. For example, Discord says desktop Ash appears as Dark on mobile.
Adjust readability without changing clients
If your goal is a more comfortable screen rather than a different color palette, check the other controls in User Settings > Appearance. Discord includes UI density choices (Compact, Default, and Spacious), message display spacing, zoom, chat font scaling, and message group spacing. These built-in settings can change how much fits on screen or how easy text is to read without installing anything.

Why avoid unofficial theme apps and injectors?
Discord’s Terms of Service prohibit “using any unauthorized software designed to modify the services.” They also say users may not “copy, modify, create derivative works based upon, distribute, sell, lease, or sublicense any of our software or services.” These restrictions make Discord’s own Appearance settings the safer supported way to change its look; they do not establish that every third-party tool steals credentials or that every use results in an account sanction. The Terms are effective September 29, 2025, and were last updated August 29, 2025. Read the Discord Terms of Service before using software that modifies the client.
