How PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) Works—and How It Compares With DLSS and FSR

PSSR is Sony’s machine-learning upscaler for PlayStation 5 Pro. It analyzes game imagery and reconstructs it at a higher output resolution, helping developers balance image quality and performance. Sony says its upgraded version improves fine-detail clarity and image stability, but results depend on the game and its implementation. The public information does not establish that PSSR always produces native 4K or universally outperforms Nvidia DLSS or AMD FSR.

What PSSR does on PS5 Pro

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is a software graphics feature built into PS5 Pro, not a separate accessory or a setting that applies to every PlayStation game. Sony introduced it as an AI-driven, machine-learning-based upscaling technology. Its role is to reconstruct a higher-resolution image from game imagery, rather than require the game to render every output pixel directly.

Sony positions PSSR as a way to support sharp output, including for a 4K display, while giving developers room to manage rendering workload. The precise internal resolution and performance tradeoff are determined by each game’s implementation; Sony does not publish a single resolution saving or frame-rate gain that applies across titles. Its current product page describes more than 100 PS5 titles as enhanced for PS5 Pro, a broader category than games that specifically support PSSR: Sony’s PS5 Pro product page.

How PSSR reconstructs an image

In a February 27, 2026 announcement, PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny described PSSR as “an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them.” That is the clearest public description of the process in Sony’s materials. It supports describing PSSR as image reconstruction, but Sony has not publicly specified the complete algorithm, neural-network architecture, training data, or all image inputs in the sources cited here. It would be speculation to fill those gaps with assumptions about how PC upscalers work.

Upscaling is not the same as native rendering: a reconstructed output can look sharp, but it does not mean the game rendered every pixel at the output resolution. Nor does the word “AI” mean that PSSR changes a game’s art assets; Sony describes it as an image-upscaling technology.

What changed in upgraded PSSR

On February 27, 2026, Sony said the upgraded PSSR uses “a very different approach to not only the neural network but also the overall algorithm.” Cerny attributed the algorithm and network to Sony’s Project Amethyst partnership with AMD and said the work is also reflected in AMD FSR 4, with further refinement for PS5 Pro. That relationship does not make the console implementation and PC FSR identical products, and results should not be assumed to transfer unchanged between platforms. Sony’s February 27, 2026 announcement.

Sony’s March 16, 2026 rollout post says the upgraded version improves fine-detail clarity and image stability, offers more precise reconstruction and motion stability, and gives developers more flexibility in balancing performance and fidelity. These are Sony’s descriptions of the update, not a standardized independent comparison across games. Sony’s March 16, 2026 rollout post.

Resident Evil Requiem

Sony identified Resident Evil Requiem as the first game using upgraded PSSR. Capcom’s Masaru Ijuin, Senior Manager in Engine Development Support/R&D Foundational Technology, said the update helped process intricate details, including individually rendered hair strands and texture characteristics.

Control and Alan Wake 2

Remedy Graphics Technical Director Tatu Aalto said upgraded PSSR improved upscaling quality and stability in Control and Alan Wake 2, and responded quickly to visibility changes.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Square Enix Director Naoki Hamaguchi said Final Fantasy VII Rebirth showed more natural restoration of fine details such as hair, with less flicker and afterimage. These observations illustrate what a developer reported for that title; they are not a controlled ranking against DLSS or FSR.

How PSSR compares with DLSS and FSR

PSSR, Nvidia DLSS, and AMD FSR are upscaling technologies, but a technology-wide winner cannot be established from the available evidence. Results depend on the game, implementation, hardware, settings, input resolution, and scene. A useful comparison therefore focuses on the same game and conditions rather than treating the technology names as fixed quality tiers.

Comparison axis What to check
Platform PSSR is Sony’s feature for PS5 Pro. DLSS and FSR are separate technologies used on compatible PC hardware and, in some cases, other platforms. Support depends on the particular game and hardware.
Game implementation Compare the same game and build, scene, output resolution, graphics preset, and performance mode. Upscalers are integrated and tuned per game.
Image behavior Look at fine geometry, foliage, hair, particles, thin lines, motion, shimmer or flicker, ghosting, and reconstruction stability. Sony and developers emphasize fine detail and motion stability for upgraded PSSR, but those claims are not a standardized cross-upscaler ranking.
Performance Compare frame rate alongside image quality at a comparable rendering workload. A console performance mode and a PC benchmark with different hardware or settings are not an apples-to-apples test.
Evidence Keep first-party technical descriptions, developer comments, and independent controlled tests distinct. A result in one game does not establish a ranking for other games.

Sony said on February 27, 2026 that PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles at that time. That figure refers to PSSR use, not the number of titles using the upgraded version; it is also distinct from Sony’s broader count of more than 100 PS5 Pro-enhanced titles.

How to enable upgraded PSSR

Sony says PS5 Pro owners can use the “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” system option for games that already support PSSR. This does not add PSSR support to an unsupported game. Sony cautions that the result varies by title and says the option can be turned off if unexpected visual effects occur. The exact menu labels or availability may vary with system software.

  1. On PS5 Pro, open Settings.
  2. Go to Screen and Video, then Video Output.
  3. Select Enhance PSSR Image Quality and turn it on.
  4. Try the game. If you see unexpected visual effects, return to the same setting and turn the option off.

Does PSSR make games 4K?

PSSR can reconstruct an image for higher-resolution output, and Sony presents the feature in the context of 4K gaming. That does not mean every supported game renders natively at 4K, that every PSSR game outputs the same image quality, or that every PS5 game uses PSSR. The game’s implementation determines how upscaling is used, while the visible result varies by title.
