Your Discord profile picture (avatar) is the image other users see next to your username across servers and DMs. You can update it anytime, and Discord will automatically crop it to fit the circular avatar format.

- A supported image file you want to upload (see requirements below).
- Stable internet to avoid upload failures or partially applied changes.
If you’re switching devices, note that you may need to refresh the Discord page or re-open the app after uploading.

File Requirements, Cropping, and Common Limitations
Discord processes uploaded images to fit the avatar circle. That means you should upload a photo where the subject is centered and easy to crop.
Recommended image types
- JPEG (commonly accepted)
- PNG (commonly accepted)
- GIFs and other formats may or may not be accepted depending on current Discord validation—use PNG or JPG if you’re unsure.
Practical sizing guidance
Discord doesn’t ask for “exact dimensions” in most interfaces, but higher-resolution images upload better and crop more cleanly. A safe approach is an image at least 512×512 or larger.
If you upload a tiny, heavily compressed image, Discord may show noticeable softness after processing.
Crop behavior
If the UI shows a crop box, keep the important part of your face centered. Even if your original photo looks perfect, the circular crop can cut off hairlines, glasses edges, or logos.
Troubleshooting When the New Photo Does Not Show
If you uploaded a new avatar but it still shows the old one, it’s usually caching, a failed upload, or the avatar update didn’t fully apply.
Quick checks (in order)
- Confirm the upload completed on your device. If Discord shows no new avatar, retry the upload.
- Log out and back in on the affected platform (web or app).
- Refresh or restart the client:
- Web: hard refresh (Ctrl+F5 / Cmd+Shift+R)
- Desktop: fully quit Discord and relaunch
- Clear browser cache if you’re on web (try only for discord.com first if possible).
- Try another image file to rule out a format/size issue.
Problems You Might Hit and Fixes That Work
Your upload button is missing or the avatar won’t let you edit
In most cases, you’re either looking at a restricted view, not in the correct settings page, or you’re not fully signed in. Re-open User Settings → My Account and try again.
If you’re using an embedded browser view inside another app, prefer the main Discord app or a standalone browser tab.

The new avatar appears to you but not to other users
That usually points to caching on the other side. Ask a friend to refresh their client, or wait a few minutes in case Discord is still distributing updates.
On your side, hard refresh web or restart the Discord desktop app.
Discord rejects the image
If Discord won’t accept the file, it’s often due to format, corrupted file data, or an unsupported file type. Convert your image to PNG or JPEG, then upload again.
Also check file naming and try a fresh download or export of the image from your editor.
You see the old avatar on one device only
It’s common for one client to lag behind. Refresh the page (web) or force-close and reopen Discord (mobile/desktop), then confirm in User Settings that the avatar thumbnail updates.

Why does my avatar look different after uploading?
Discord crops images to a circular avatar frame. If your subject wasn’t centered, the crop can cut off parts of the photo or change the framing.
Can I upload a transparent PNG?
Yes, transparent PNGs can work, but the final avatar still displays in Discord’s circular crop. If your edges look odd, use a solid background or re-crop to keep the subject centered.
