If the game does not offer the choices you need, check its launcher or console settings. There is no universal menu path: supported languages, whether voices and subtitles can be mixed, and when a change takes effect vary by game, edition, and platform.
Check the game’s own settings first
Open the title or main menu, then inspect sections such as Audio, Voice, Dialogue, Subtitles, Text, or Language. Some games put language controls on the title screen rather than in the pause menu or general options. Konami’s support guidance, for example, says, “You can change the language from the main menu,” and notes that the console or computer language does not need to be changed: Konami Support: How to change the language.

Look for distinct controls if you want spoken dialogue in one language and subtitles in another. A single language selector may change both, while other games offer separate voice and text choices. Availability is title-specific; do not assume that a game supports a mixed-language setup just because the platform supports both languages. Konami’s guidance also illustrates that some settings are available only from the Title Menu, not other Options menus: Konami Support.

A platform-level language can influence a game’s default, but it does not guarantee that the game includes that language or provides independent audio and subtitle controls. Use the steps for the platform you play on, then check the game itself if you need a particular combination.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Steam on PC
- Open Library in Steam and right-click the game.
- Select Properties, then open Language.
- Choose a language offered for that game. If prompted, allow Steam to download the language files before launching.
Steam cautions: “If the game supports the language you have selected, files for that language may need to be downloaded before you can play.” Some third-party games use their own language settings independently of Steam, and not every title offers every language. Check the game’s Steam store listing for its supported languages: Steam Support: Steam and Games – Language Settings.
Nintendo Switch
A Switch game or software application defaults to the console’s selected language when the game supports that language. That rule does not mean the system setting separates voice from subtitles. For separate choices, check the game’s options and official support information: Nintendo Support: Can I Play My Game in Another Language?.

PlayStation 5
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Go to Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets.
- Review Subtitles and Audio to enable subtitles and choose console-language game audio or original audio.
Sony says these presets apply only to PS5 games and warns that some settings may not apply to every game. A game’s own settings and language support still determine what is available: PlayStation Support.

Check whether the change is allowed mid-game
Some games let you change voice or subtitle settings at any time; others restrict a choice to the opening setup. Square Enix’s FAQ for Secret of Mana says voiceover can be changed in the options menu during gameplay, but on Steam subtitles cannot be changed after a selection is made at the beginning of the game: Square Enix Support: Can I change the voice over and subtitles from Japanese to a another language?.
Before restarting or beginning a new save, check the game’s instructions for whether language changes require a restart, apply immediately, or are locked after initial selection. The exact behavior depends on the title; the cited examples do not establish one rule for all games.

What to verify before settling on a language
- Separate controls: Confirm whether dialogue audio and subtitles or text can be selected independently.
- Where the setting lives: Check the game menu first, then the launcher or console if the game offers no suitable control.
- Supported languages: Verify the language for the specific game and edition; a system or launcher option alone is not proof that the game includes it.
- When it can be changed: Look for restrictions at startup or after the opening language selection.
- Downloads and restarts: Allow for language-file downloads where required, and check the game’s instructions for any restart requirement.
