To change subtitles for the video you’re watching, open the player’s gear or settings menu, choose Subtitles/CC, and select an available language. The menu lists available tracks for that video. If the language you want is not listed, changing the default preference will not create it; check the show’s language information and the episode-specific availability instead. Crunchyroll Help states, “This feature works on all supported devices.” That means the player control is the general route, not that every show has the same tracks or that every device presents the same menu.

There is one important regional exception: for some Japanese-audio anime in certain regions, subtitles may be required to remain on. If the player will not let you turn them off, this can be a regional or title-specific restriction rather than a problem with the settings. The available action is determined by the title and region; repeatedly changing the account preference will not remove that restriction.
Keep the scope of the player selection in mind: it changes the track for the video you have open. It is the quickest choice when you want a one-time switch, such as comparing available subtitle languages on a particular episode. If you want Crunchyroll to start with a preferred language when it is offered on other videos, set the account or profile default as well.
Set a default subtitle language
A default preference reduces the need to choose a language again when starting another video. It applies only when a matching subtitle track is available for the content you play.

A default is a preference, not a guarantee that every show will use that language. Track availability is tied to the specific content and can also vary by region. For that reason, a video may use another available option or show no matching track even when your preferred language is set. The setting does not add a translation, create captions for a dubbed episode, or override title-specific restrictions.
If you set a default and a particular episode still starts with a different language, open that episode’s Subtitles/CC menu and inspect the tracks it actually offers. The default setting answers “which language should I prefer?” The player list answers “which tracks can I select for this video?” Those are related but separate checks. A preference can save repeated selections when the track exists, but the episode menu is the final authority for that playback.
Website and mobile instructions are not interchangeable menu-by-menu: on the website the documented route passes through Settings and Preferences, while the mobile route is described as tapping the avatar and selecting Subtitle/CC Language. If one set of directions does not match the screen in front of you, confirm whether you are in the website or app rather than assuming the option is missing from your account.

The appearance setting affects presentation—such as text font or background/window color where supported—not which language track is being played.

Website profile preferences
Crunchyroll’s help describes profile-based appearance controls on the website. Open the profile you want to edit, then go to Avatar > Settings > Preferences and select the subtitle/caption appearance option. Available adjustments include text font and background or window color. The setting is separate from the language preference, so choosing a font or background does not select a different subtitle track. When you are changing these settings, first make sure you are editing the profile you intend to use. The documented route is profile-based, and the appearance menu is within preferences rather than the playback language list. If your goal is to read a different language, return to Subtitle/CC Language or use the player menu. If your goal is to alter text presentation, use the appearance option instead.
Mobile and other apps
For app caption styling, Crunchyroll directs viewers to their device’s accessibility settings. The exact menu depends on the device and operating system, so do not expect the same labels or options on every phone, tablet, or television. If an app does not expose a Crunchyroll-specific appearance menu, check the device’s accessibility caption controls.
This is a platform distinction, not a workaround for absent subtitle languages. Device accessibility settings can affect how supported captions appear, but they do not make an unavailable track appear in the Crunchyroll player. Start with the device controls when the issue is the look of captions in an app; start with the player’s track list when the issue is language or whether subtitles are present.
TV-specific controls
Television apps can treat closed captions and subtitles differently. On LG TV, Crunchyroll says closed captions can be styled using the player’s Closed Caption Styling option, while subtitles are built into the video and cannot be restyled there. The Android TV help article lists caption styling and subtitle-language preferences as supported features, but that does not establish that every TV app has identical controls. Consult the platform-specific instructions for your device: LG TV app help and Android TV help.
On LG TV, the crucial distinction is whether the text is a closed-caption track or a subtitle built into the video. The Closed Caption Styling control applies to closed captions; it does not restyle built-in subtitles. If the words are visible but the LG styling option does not change them, the video may be using built-in subtitles rather than a closed-caption track. On Android TV, caption styling and subtitle-language preferences are listed as supported, but check the Android TV instructions for the app rather than assuming the LG menu name or behavior carries over.
In short, choose the control by both goal and platform: use Subtitles/CC for a track, profile preferences on the website for supported appearance adjustments, device accessibility caption settings for app styling where available, and the TV player’s own caption styling option where specified. A TV’s support for one control does not mean it supports every appearance option in the same way.

Before troubleshooting a preference, confirm that the title offers the track. From the show’s details page, choose More Details and review the listed audio and subtitle languages. This is a useful first check, but the listing for a show does not necessarily mean every season and episode has every listed option. Availability can also vary by region because of licensing.

- Look at the listed subtitle and audio languages.
- Start the specific episode and check its player’s Subtitles/CC menu for the tracks actually offered there.
Use the episode player menu as the final check for the video you plan to watch; do not assume a track listed for a show is present on every episode. Crunchyroll explains the language listing and regional variation in its available languages help article.
The show details page is useful for a broad overview, while the episode player shows the options for the exact video you are watching. Check both when a language appears to be missing: a show-level listing may reflect options available across the title without guaranteeing that every season or episode carries each one. Likewise, a language may be listed for the show but unavailable in your viewing region because distribution rights differ by region.
Audio and subtitle language are separate entries in the details information. If you are trying to confirm a dubbed version, inspect the audio languages; if you are looking for translated text or captions, inspect subtitle languages and then the episode’s Subtitles/CC menu. Seeing a language in one category does not establish that a corresponding option exists in the other.

The language is not offered for that episode
If a language does not appear in the player, the title, season, or episode may not have that track, or the track may not be licensed for your region. Verify the show’s details and then inspect the episode menu. A default preference cannot override these availability limits.
It helps to separate three possibilities: the show may not list the language at all; the show may list it but not on the particular season or episode; or the track may not be available in the region where you are watching. The first two are content-level availability questions, and the third is a regional licensing question. In all three cases, changing fonts, changing the default, or reopening the same menu cannot create a track that is not offered.
A dubbed episode has no captions
Captions are not available for every dubbed episode. Some titles include an English closed-caption track, but its presence depends on what is offered for that content. Check the player’s Subtitles/CC list rather than assuming a dubbed video will include captions. This distinction is covered in Crunchyroll’s subtitle troubleshooting guidance.
A dubbed audio track and a closed-caption track are not the same thing. Hearing dialogue in English does not mean English CC is available for that episode. Look for a caption option in the menu; if no such option appears, the content may not include one. This is different from selecting another subtitle language for a video that does have subtitle tracks.

- Open the episode in an incognito or private browser window to see whether an extension may be interfering.
- Update your browser or try a different browser.
- Test the episode on another device.
These checks help distinguish a browser or device issue from a missing track. If the language still does not appear, contact Crunchyroll support and provide the episode title, the language you expected, and your viewing location. That information helps identify whether the issue concerns the particular episode or regional availability.
The checks are useful because they change one factor at a time. A private window can help identify an extension conflict; trying an updated or different browser can help isolate a browser-specific issue; testing another device can show whether the problem is limited to one setup. These are troubleshooting steps for subtitles missing on web, not a way to bypass a title’s or region’s actual language availability.
If subtitles have never appeared for that episode, first check its menu and the title details rather than assuming a browser fault. If they appeared before and have disappeared, the web troubleshooting sequence is more relevant. Keeping those situations separate avoids spending time adjusting appearance preferences when the actual issue is a missing track or browser conflict.
