Guides and community configuration files use several spellings, including MaxClanSize and ClanMaxSize, so verify the name already generated in your server’s own file before changing the number.

Do not edit the file while the server is running. A running server can write its in-memory settings back to disk during shutdown and overwrite a manual change. A restart after saving is the safest way to load the new value.

What controls clan size
Conan Exiles stores the clan-size limit in the server configuration file rather than in a normal in-game settings menu. The file is named ServerSettings.ini and contains a [ServerSettings] section. The number assigned to the clan-size key determines how many members a clan may have on that server.
The setting is server-wide. A player cannot raise the limit for only one clan, and changing the value does not automatically merge clans or remove existing members. It changes the limit the server uses when clans are created or managed after the new configuration is loaded.

The exact key spelling is not settled by the available documentation. You may encounter these forms:

Because the sources disagree, do not assume that MaxClanSize, ClanMaxSize, or a particular capitalization will work on every server build or hosting panel. The safest rule is to preserve the spelling used by the configuration file your server generates. If no clan-size line exists, confirm the expected key with your host or compare the host’s current template before adding one.
Before you edit: prerequisites and a safe change window
Prepare the change as a short maintenance task. You need access to the server’s files or its configuration editor, permission to stop and start the server, and a way to keep a copy of the original file.
- Stop the server completely. Use the host panel’s stop control or stop the dedicated-server process on a self-hosted machine. Wait until the panel reports that it is stopped and no process is still running.
- Locate the active configuration. A panel may expose several configuration files. Edit the one associated with the Conan Exiles instance that your players actually join.
- Make a backup. Download or copy
ServerSettings.inibefore changing it. A dated copy lets you restore the previous configuration if the server refuses to start or other settings disappear. - Record the current value. Note the existing clan-size line, if present, so you can return to it without guessing.
- Plan a restart. A restart is the dependable application method even though one hosting guide reports that an administrative
ApplyServerSettingscommand can apply many settings immediately.
Stopping first matters more than convenience. If you edit a live file and then stop the server, the shutdown process may save its old in-memory settings over your edit.

The separators may appear as normal backslashes in Windows Explorer or as escaped backslashes when a path is shown in documentation. Open the file belonging to the server installation that is launched for your Conan Exiles instance.
A Linux server uses the corresponding LinuxServer configuration folder instead of WindowsServer. In other words, look under the ConanSandbox saved configuration tree for the Linux-server directory and then open its ServerSettings.ini. The exact parent directory depends on where you installed the dedicated server.
If you operate more than one instance, check the launch directory and instance-specific save location rather than editing the first file named ServerSettings.ini found on disk. A correctly edited file has no effect if the running process reads a different instance directory.
Edit a panel-hosted server
Most game-server panels provide a file editor instead of requiring direct filesystem access. The wording varies by provider, but the relevant area is commonly called Configuration Files. Use the panel’s stop control first, then open the configuration-file editor for the Conan Exiles service.
- Stop the Conan Exiles server and wait for the stopped status.
- Open Configuration Files or the panel’s equivalent file-management section.
- Select
ServerSettings.ini, not a general startup-options file or an unrelated user-settings file. - Use the panel’s download, duplicate, or copy function to preserve the original configuration.
- Search for
MaxClanSize,ClanMaxSize, andclanMaxSize. If one is already present, edit that line rather than creating a second spelling. - Save the new number under the
[ServerSettings]header. - Start or restart the server from the panel.
Some panels regenerate configuration files when a setting is changed through their own form. If a manual line disappears after a panel save, use the panel’s built-in Conan Exiles setting if it provides one, or contact the host for the key name that its template accepts. Do not keep adding alternate spellings; duplicate keys make it unclear which value the server will read.
Edit a self-hosted server
For a self-hosted installation, use a plain-text editor that does not add rich-text formatting. Notepad or another text editor that preserves the .ini extension is sufficient. Avoid saving the file as ServerSettings.ini.txt.

- Stop the dedicated server process.
- Open the active
ServerSettings.iniin the appropriateWindowsServerorLinuxServerdirectory. - Copy the original file to a safe location and give the copy a date or version label.
- Find the
[ServerSettings]section. - Locate the existing clan-size entry, regardless of whether its spelling is
MaxClanSize,ClanMaxSize, or another form supplied by your installation. - Replace only the value after the equals sign. Keep the key spelling and the basic
key=valueformat intact. - If the entry is absent, add the key your host or generated template identifies, directly under
[ServerSettings]. Do not add multiple candidate keys as a test. - Save the file as plain text, confirm that the filename and extension remain
ServerSettings.ini, and restart the server.
A minimal line looks like this, but the key must match your installation:
MaxClanSize=10
The line above is an example of the format, not a universal default or recommendation. Other published examples show ClanMaxSize=20 and clanMaxSize=60. Those numbers demonstrate possible values seen in guides and community files; they do not establish the default for your server.
Choose and validate the value
Enter a whole-number value that fits the policy you want for the server. The available material does not establish a single official default, a documented maximum, or a guaranteed minimum for every current server version. Treat the value in your own generated file, host template, or server documentation as authoritative for that installation.
Before announcing the change, validate it in a controlled way:
- Restart the server after saving the file.
- Join with an administrator account or a test account.
- Check the clan-management interface by attempting an action that would exceed the old limit, without recruiting real players solely for testing.
- Ask a second player to confirm the observed limit if the server is populated.
- If the limit is unchanged, stop the server again and troubleshoot the key, file path, and save operation rather than repeatedly changing numbers.
Do not infer success merely because the server starts. A syntactically valid file can still contain an unrecognized key, or you may have edited a file that the running instance does not read.
Restart versus live application
Instructions conflict about whether a file edit can be applied without a restart. One hosting guide says many settings can be applied immediately with the administrator command ApplyServerSettings; another says changes in ServerSettings.ini take effect after a restart. Neither statement resolves the conflicting clan-key spellings.

Use a full stop-and-restart cycle as the default procedure:
- Stop the server before editing so its shutdown cannot overwrite your work.
- Save the file while the process is stopped.
- Start the server and allow it to finish loading before testing.
If you already use ApplyServerSettings and your server’s own administration documentation confirms that it handles this setting, you can treat it as an optional live-apply attempt. Keep the restart procedure available as the recovery path, and do not assume that a command reported as successful proves that the clan-size value was recognized.
Common failure modes and fixes
The change disappears after stopping the server
This usually indicates that the file was edited while the server was running, or that the panel rewrote the file from an older in-memory or template copy. Stop the server, restore the backup if necessary, make the edit while it is stopped, save, and then start it.
The server starts, but the clan limit is unchanged
- Confirm that the edited file belongs to the instance players are joining.
- Check whether the key spelling matches the line already generated in that file.
- Make sure the line is under
[ServerSettings], not under another section. - Look for a second clan-size line that could create ambiguity and remove the accidental duplicate.
- Verify that the editor saved the file with the
.iniextension. - Perform a complete restart rather than relying on a live-apply command.
The setting is missing
Do not automatically add every spelling found in online examples. The evidence available for this setting is inconsistent. Ask the hosting provider which key its current Conan Exiles template accepts, or inspect a freshly generated configuration from the same installation. Once you know the accepted spelling, add one line under [ServerSettings] and restart.

The server fails to load after the edit
Stop the service, restore the untouched backup, and start it to confirm recovery. Then compare the edited file with the backup for accidental formatting changes, a damaged section header, an extra character, or a filename change. Reapply only the intended one-line modification after the original server is running normally.
A panel keeps reverting the line
Some panels regenerate files from their own configuration model. Check whether the panel has a dedicated Conan Exiles setting or an editable template. If it does not expose clan size, provide the host with the exact file name, section, and key spelling your installation generated and ask which configuration method it supports.

The underlying change is the same on all three routes: one clan-size key in the active ServerSettings.ini, under [ServerSettings], followed by a restart.
How to roll back safely
Rollback is simply the reverse of the change, provided you kept the original file. Stop the server, restore the backup, verify that the restored file is still named ServerSettings.ini, and restart. If you recorded the prior clan-size value, you can instead edit the single line back to that value.

Keep the backup until players have confirmed that clan management behaves normally. If a later configuration change causes trouble, retain separate dated copies rather than overwriting the only known-good file.
What is and is not established about the setting
The reliable operational points are limited but clear: the setting belongs in ServerSettings.ini; the server should be stopped before manual editing; the line belongs under [ServerSettings]; and a restart is the safe activation method.
The exact key name and default are less certain. Published material uses MaxClanSize, ClanMaxSize, and clanMaxSize, while examples show 10, 20, and 60. Those examples should not be presented as an official default, a guaranteed limit, or proof that every edition accepts all three spellings. The Official Conan Exiles Wiki search result for server configuration did not show a clan-size entry, and no confirmed Funcom documentation for this particular key was identified. For that reason, the file generated by your own server and the configuration guidance from your host should take precedence over a copied snippet.
