To improve Google Chrome for a specific problem, change the setting that addresses it: use Performance for sluggish browsing or battery drain, Privacy and security and Site settings for tracking and permissions, and Appearance for readability. Chrome’s options and labels can vary by device and version; its detailed Performance controls are desktop features, not personalization settings available on Android or iOS.
Where to start: match the setting to the problem
Chrome’s controls are spread across Settings sections, so there is no single “better browsing” switch. Choose a goal before changing anything:

- Slow pages or too many open tabs: start with Performance and check extensions.
- Battery life: consider Energy Saver on a supported desktop device.
- Tracking or site access: review cookie controls and Site settings.
- Hard-to-read pages: adjust zoom or font size in Appearance.
- Unexpected changes: investigate extensions, then consider resetting settings.
For the general settings map, see Google’s Chrome settings overview. The steps below describe desktop controls where noted; labels may differ by platform or Chrome version.

Try the basic checks first
Google’s performance troubleshooting guidance starts with updating Chrome and closing tabs you are not using. Review extensions too: turn off or remove ones you do not need, since extensions can consume resources or affect browsing. These steps can help identify a cause, but they do not guarantee a particular speed improvement.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
On desktop, Chrome’s built-in Task Manager can help locate resource-heavy tabs or background pages. Open Chrome’s menu and choose More tools > Task Manager, then sort by memory usage to inspect the largest entries. Before ending a task, save any work: stopping a tab or process can discard unsaved changes. See Google’s performance troubleshooting steps.
Choose whether to preload pages
On desktop, find the control under Settings > Performance > Preload pages. Preloading can make likely pages open faster, but it is not consequence-free: Google says it can use cookies when allowed and may send encrypted page requests through Google to help hide your identity from the destination sites. Decide based on whether the possible speed benefit is worth that data-handling behavior for you. Details are in Google’s performance guidance and Chrome’s performance settings documentation.

Manage tab memory and battery use
Set Memory Saver to match your tab habits
On supported desktop devices, Memory Saver deactivates tabs you are not using and reloads them when you return. In Settings > Performance, Google offers three deactivation levels:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Level | How to think about it |
|---|---|
| Moderate | Less aggressive deactivation; inactive tabs can remain active longer. |
| Balanced | A middle ground between memory recovery and keeping tabs active. |
| Maximum | More aggressive deactivation; unused tabs can become inactive sooner. |
If a site needs to stay active, add it to Memory Saver’s exception list. Some activities can already prevent deactivation, including audio or video, calls, screen sharing, downloads, partially completed forms, pinned tabs, and connected devices. The exact controls and availability depend on the desktop device and Chrome version; these detailed options are not offered for personalization on Android or iOS. See Google’s Memory Saver and performance settings guidance.

Use Energy Saver when battery life matters more than peak performance
Energy Saver is available in Settings > Performance on Windows, Mac, and Chromebook devices with a battery installed, according to Google. It can help conserve battery, but may change gaming or video performance. Turn it off for an individual session if those activities are affected. This desktop option should not be assumed to work the same way on Android or iOS. See Google’s performance settings documentation.
Control cookies, camera access, and other site permissions
Change permissions for one site or set defaults
To manage permissions broadly, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings. You can also change permissions for an individual site from the site information control beside its address, without changing the default for other sites. Depending on the permission and prompt, Chrome offers choices such as Allow this time, Allow while visiting the site, and Never allow. Review access to your camera, microphone, location, and other sensitive features rather than granting it automatically. See Google’s site-permission guidance.

Choose a third-party cookie policy with compatibility in mind
Chrome’s cookie controls let you allow or block third-party cookies globally and create site exceptions. First-party and third-party cookies are used in different site contexts; blocking third-party cookies can disrupt sites that depend on them. If a site stops working, an exception for that site may be more targeted than changing the global policy.
Deleting cookies is a different action from blocking them: it can sign you out and remove saved site preferences. If you choose to clear them, use Settings > Privacy and security > Delete browsing data and check what will be removed before confirming. See Google’s cookie controls and deletion guidance.

Review security checks and diagnostic reporting
Use Safety Check and secure-connection warnings
Google says Safety Check runs automatically and can surface concerns such as Safe Browsing status and abusive notification permissions. Chrome also offers Always use secure connections, which upgrades URLs to HTTPS and warns before visiting a site that does not support it. Treat a warning as a reason to pause and assess whether the site is trustworthy; do not click through automatically. See Google’s Chrome security settings guidance.
Decide whether to send crash and error reports
Chrome’s automatic crash and error reporting can be turned on or off. Google says reports may include Chrome settings, extensions, the page open at the time, device details, and memory related to the crash. That memory may include page contents, payment information, or passwords. Consider this scope when deciding whether to share diagnostic reports. See Google’s crash and error reporting information.
Make pages easier to read
Use page zoom for a particular site
To enlarge or reduce one site without changing every page, adjust its zoom while visiting it. Chrome keeps per-site zoom values; you can review and remove them in Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings (look for the zoom controls). This is useful when one site is hard to read but your usual browser scale works elsewhere. See Google’s page zoom guidance.
Set global zoom or font size
For a consistent change across pages, open Settings > Appearance and adjust page zoom or font size. Page zoom scales the page; font size changes text only. Some websites prevent browsers from resizing only text, so use page zoom if a font-only adjustment does not take effect. Chrome’s settings overview also points to accessibility features, Reading mode, and Listen to this page; availability can depend on platform and version. See Google’s zoom and font-size guidance and Chrome’s settings overview.
Reset settings only if targeted fixes are not enough
If an extension or app has changed settings unexpectedly, Chrome provides Restore settings to their original defaults. On desktop, find it under Settings > Reset settings. Google says bookmarks and saved passwords are retained, so this is not a full browser wipe. The reset changes settings such as the default search engine, homepage and startup tabs, new tab page, pinned tabs, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. Fonts and accessibility settings are examples of settings that are not reset. Review the consequences before confirming; see Google’s reset-settings guidance.
