To change a Windrose dedicated server’s displayed name, stop the server completely, edit the ServerName value in ServerDescription.json, save the file, and start the server again. Windrose does not expose a consistently documented description field: field lists for current server files omit one, while a separate windrose.support guide describes a Description field. Check the schema used by your installed build before adding anything.
Change the Windrose server name
The reliable procedure is a file edit, not an in-game setting. Windrose reads the server name from ServerDescription.json. Because the dedicated server may rewrite that file during shutdown, make the change only while the process is fully stopped.

- Stop the dedicated server. Use the control supplied by your operating system, hosting panel, service manager, or launch script, then wait until the Windrose process has exited. A window that has closed but leaves the process running is not fully stopped.
- Locate the active
ServerDescription.json. Depending on the build, it may be in the server root, anR5folder, orSaved/Config. The location conflict is explained in the next section. - Make a backup copy. Copy the file to a separate name such as
ServerDescription.json.bakbefore editing. Keep the original until the new name has been confirmed in the server browser or connection screen. - Open the file as plain text. Use an editor that does not add rich-text formatting. Preserve the existing indentation, braces, quotation marks, commas, and property names.
- Change only
ServerName. Replace its string value with the name you want players to see. The reference material describes this field as accepting any string; the practical limit, character handling, and display truncation can still vary by build or client. - Save the file without changing its extension. It must remain
ServerDescription.json, notServerDescription.json.txt. - Restart the server. Windrose reads the settings during startup. Check the name from a client after the server has finished loading.
Illustrative name edit
Your file may contain additional properties and may use a different nesting style. Change the existing value in place rather than copying this example over the entire file:

}If the file already wraps settings inside an object, keep that wrapper. Do not move unrelated properties to the top level merely to match an example found online.

Where ServerDescription.json is stored
Published instructions disagree about the path. That disagreement can reflect different dedicated-server packages, installation methods, or game builds, so searching for the filename is safer than assuming one universal location.

How to identify the file Windrose actually reads
- Search the complete server directory for every file named
ServerDescription.json. - Prefer the copy whose modification time changes when the server shuts down or starts, because one guide reports that Windrose rewrites the file on shutdown.
- If more than one copy exists, stop the server, change one copy temporarily, restart, and verify which name appears. Revert the test if necessary, then edit the active copy.
- Do not edit a backup, template, or example file that is outside the directory used by the running instance.
On managed hosting, the panel may expose a file browser that hides the physical path. In that case, use the panel’s configuration editor or ask the host which directory is mounted as the server root; the required setting is still ServerName in the active JSON file.

Why the server must be fully stopped
Editing while Windrose is running can produce two different failures. First, a shutdown routine may write the in-memory settings back to ServerDescription.json, overwriting your manual change. Second, a malformed or partially written file can cause startup problems and may result in fields being restored to defaults. Stopping first avoids a race between your editor and the server process.

- Warn connected players that the server is going offline.
- Use the normal stop command or hosting-panel stop button.
- Wait for the process to terminate and for disk activity to finish.
- Only then copy and edit
ServerDescription.json. - Start the server and wait for a completed startup before checking the new name.
If the server is killed forcefully every time, make a backup before the next start and plan a controlled stop for configuration changes. A forced termination can leave a write incomplete, regardless of the name change itself.

Can you change the Windrose server description?
This is not settled across the available documentation. Field lists for Windrose server descriptions include PersistentServerId, InviteCode, IsPasswordProtected, Password, ServerName, WorldIslandId, MaxPlayerCount, and optional direct-connection properties, but no dedicated description key. A separate windrose.support guide lists Name, Description, Slots, AdminPassword, and JoinPassword, including a 500-character description limit. Because those schemas do not match, that guide may describe an older release, a different configuration interface, or a different build.
Check whether your build supports a description field
- Stop the server and make a backup of the active file.
- Open
ServerDescription.jsonand inspect the existing property names. Do not assume thatNameis interchangeable withServerName. - Check the documentation or example file shipped with the same server build. The installed schema is more relevant than a guide for another release.
- If the file already contains
Description, edit that existing string and keep its current nesting and capitalization. - If no description property exists, do not add one blindly. An unknown key may be ignored, or an invalid structure may prevent startup. Test only on a disposable copy or a separately backed-up instance, and remove the key if the server reports an error or the field has no visible effect.
There is no evidence here that every current Windrose build displays a free-form description in the server browser. A successful JSON edit therefore does not prove that clients will see a description; the client’s browser and the server build must both support the field.

JSON structure differences between builds
Examples found for newer builds reportedly place settings inside a ServerDescription_Persistent object, while older examples put properties at the top level. The key name and nesting level must match the format already used by your file.

}These are format illustrations, not replacement templates. Do not delete properties, change capitalization, or move keys between levels unless the documentation for your installed build requires it. A missing comma, an extra comma, or a curly quote copied from a word processor can make the JSON unreadable.
Fields you may see in the same file
The following names have been reported for build 0.10.0.3 and later, but the exact schema and availability can vary. They are included to help you avoid changing a field unnecessarily while renaming the server.

Do not change these values as part of a name edit. Ports are especially inconsistent across documentation: one source says ports are assigned through NAT punch-through and generally are not fixed, while other sources describe direct-connection keys. Treat those as separate networking modes, not as a reason to alter unrelated settings.
What to do when the new name does not appear
The old name returns after restart
- Confirm that the server was fully stopped before the edit. A running process can overwrite the file during shutdown.
- Search for duplicate
ServerDescription.jsonfiles and verify that you edited the copy whose timestamp changes with the running instance. - Check whether the file is regenerated from a template or panel configuration at startup. If so, make the change in that source instead of the generated copy.
- Confirm that the property is spelled exactly
ServerNameand is located at the nesting level used by your build. - Inspect the file after shutdown and again after startup. If the value changes between those points, the server or management layer is rewriting it.
The server fails to start after editing
- Stop any remaining process and restore the backup file.
- Start the server with the known-good backup to confirm that the failure came from the edit.
- Reapply only the
ServerNamechange, preserving every brace, quote, comma, and wrapper object. - Remove any newly added description key or other unverified property.
- If the failure continues, compare the file with the build’s shipped example and use the log message to identify the invalid key or structure.
The name is changed locally but not for clients
Wait until startup has completed, then refresh the client’s server list or reconnect. A cached listing can continue to show the previous name. If clients still see no change, verify that they are connecting to the same instance whose active configuration file you edited. A description may remain invisible when the build or client does not support that field.

Backups and data-protection precautions
- Keep a dated copy of
ServerDescription.jsonbefore each structural change. - Never alter
PersistentServerIdwhile trying to rename a server. The identifier is separate from the display name and may be tied to save data. - Do not replace the whole file with a minimal example; unknown properties may contain your invite, password, world, capacity, or connection settings.
- When testing an uncertain description key, use a separate test instance or a copy of the server data so a schema experiment cannot affect the production world.
- After a successful restart, retain the previous backup until players have confirmed that the expected world and access controls still work.
Quick verification checklist
- The server process is fully stopped before editing.
- The edited file is the active
ServerDescription.json, not a template or backup. ServerNamecontains the intended string and uses the file’s existing nesting style.- No commas, braces, quotes, or unrelated settings were removed.
PersistentServerIdis unchanged.- The server starts normally after the edit.
- The new name appears after the client list is refreshed.
- A description was changed only when the installed build already documents or contains a compatible
Descriptionproperty.
