What the name and description control
| Setting | Where players see it | What to use it for |
|---|---|---|
Name |
The server browser | A short, recognizable server label. |
Description |
The details panel for a selected server-browser entry, and chat when a player connects | Extra information such as the server’s play style or community expectations. |
These are separate settings: changing the description does not rename the browser entry, and changing the name does not alter the description.

For a server installed and managed directly, the generated settings file is typically in VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/ServerHostSettings.json. The server creates its default settings files after its first run.
Some hosting guides recommend placing persistent settings in save-data/Settings/ServerHostSettings.json, and hosted servers commonly use that location. The exact active path depends on the host and its setup; check the host’s file manager or documentation rather than editing a similarly named file elsewhere. A change will have no effect if you edit a copy the server does not load.

Change the fields safely
- Stop the server. If you cannot stop it, make sure nobody is connected before changing the file. Editing the settings while players are on the server can risk problems for their files.
- Open the active
ServerHostSettings.jsonin the appropriate settings folder using a text editor that preserves plain text. - Find the
NameandDescriptionentries and replace only their quoted values. For example:{ "Name": "My V Rising Server", "Description": "Role playing server. Be nice." } - Save the file and check its JSON syntax. Keep the quotation marks around each value, escape any quotation mark inside a value, and preserve commas between entries. Avoid deleting or renaming other settings.
- Start or restart the server. V Rising’s configuration instructions state that a restart is required after changing any configuration file.
- Check the result in the server browser. Select the entry to see its details, and, if needed, connect to confirm the description appears in chat.
If the name or description does not update
Confirm you edited the file the server actually uses
On a self-managed installation, check the settings file under VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/. On a hosted setup, look in the host’s file manager for the active copy, which may be under save-data/Settings/. If the game keeps showing the old text, an inactive duplicate file is a likely cause.
Check launch options for overrides
The official server instructions list launch-time alternatives for these values, including VR_DESCRIPTION=<description>, -description <description>, and -serverName. If the file contains your new text but the server still displays something else, inspect the server’s launch script or startup settings for these options. A launch-time value may be taking precedence over the file value.

Restart and verify the correct display
Make sure the server was fully restarted after saving. Then check the correct location: the name is shown in the browser, while the description is shown in the selected entry’s details and in connect-time chat. If the file, startup settings, and restart all look correct but the display still differs, verify the instructions for your specific game build and hosting setup; the official reference available for these fields is for the 1.0.x branch, and 2026-build behavior has not been independently confirmed here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Version and hosting considerations
The configuration locations and restart behavior described here follow the available V Rising server instructions and hosting guidance. The official instructions referenced are for the 1.0.x branch, not a direct verification of every later game build. Hosting-panel layouts also vary, so the file manager’s active server configuration is the best guide to which copy is loaded.
