If you reused a password, change it on every account where it appears—not just the account where you first noticed a problem. Start with the email account used for password resets, then secure financial, work, social, and other sensitive accounts. Give each account a different password, turn on multifactor authentication (MFA), and check recovery details and signed-in sessions if you suspect someone accessed an account.
Why changing one password is not enough
Someone who obtains a password from one service may try the same username and password on other services. CISA calls password reuse “a leading cause of account compromise” and describes credential stuffing as using credentials obtained from one system to attempt access to others. Go to the service directly
Open the provider’s official app or type its known website address yourself. Do not follow password-reset links in unsolicited messages. If you cannot sign in, use the provider’s official account-recovery process.

Secure your email account first
Prioritize the email account used to reset passwords on other services. Someone with access to that inbox may be able to request resets elsewhere. Change its password through the account’s official security settings, or use its official recovery process if you are locked out.

Make a list and change every reuse
Identify the other accounts where you used the old password. Next, change it on sensitive accounts, such as financial, work, and social accounts, then cover the rest of the list. Use each provider’s own security settings or recovery instructions; menu names and steps vary.

Give each account a unique password
Use a different, long password for every account. A password manager can generate and store unique passwords, helping you avoid reuse; CISA recommends password managers for this purpose in its strong-password guidance. You do not need to change passwords on a routine schedule unless a service requires it; change them when they are exposed or you have another reason to believe they are at risk.

Turn on MFA
Enable multifactor authentication on accounts that offer it. CISA prioritizes physical security keys, followed by authenticator-app MFA; SMS or email MFA are fallback choices when stronger methods are unavailable. A FIDO authenticator, including a hardware token, can provide phishing-resistant MFA, but the service must support it. Check recovery details and sessions if access may have been unauthorized
Review the account’s recovery email address and phone number, and correct anything unfamiliar. Look for signed-in devices or active sessions you do not recognize; remove them or sign them out if the provider offers those controls. Follow the provider’s security and recovery instructions, since available controls differ by service.
Choosing password storage and MFA
For password storage, consider whether an option helps you create unique passwords, works across the devices you use, and has an account-recovery process you understand. CISA recommends password managers but does not compare individual vendors in the cited guidance.

For MFA, weigh phishing resistance, whether your service supports the method, and how you will regain access if you lose a device or key. CISA identifies FIDO authenticators, including hardware tokens, as phishing-resistant; confirm that each account supports your chosen method before relying on it.

If you cannot access an account
Use the provider’s official recovery flow rather than a link from an unexpected email or text. Once access is restored, change the reused password there and review its recovery details and active sessions. If recovery does not work, follow the provider’s official support or account-recovery instructions; there is no single recovery process that applies to every service.
