Collecting performance data always has some cost; no profiler can guarantee zero impact on FPS. The practical goal is to use the lightest measurement that answers the question, then check its overhead on the target hardware and build. Start with frame timings, add a few meaningful code markers, and capture a deeper trace only when a specific hitch or bottleneck needs investigation.
Start with a repeatable target workload
Choose the device, build type, and gameplay conditions that matter to players. Use a repeatable scene, route, or event, and keep the workload consistent between captures. A profiler result is useful only when you can compare it with another run under equivalent conditions.
For final performance conclusions, profile on the intended platform. Unity notes that Editor Play mode shares the main thread and resources with the Editor, whose UI, inspectors, Scene view, and asset management can affect both timing and memory readings. Play mode is convenient for iteration, but it is not a substitute for a target-device capture. Unity: Profiler
Record the conditions alongside each capture: engine version, device, build type, workload, enabled profiler modules or trace events, and capture window. Do not treat results from different configurations as directly comparable.

- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Choose the least intrusive measurement that fits
For overall frame limits, begin with frame timing
Frame-level timing helps determine whether the game is spending its frame budget on CPU work, GPU work, or waiting for presentation. Unity’s Frame Timing Manager reports total CPU and GPU frame time, plus separate main-thread, render-thread, Present-wait, and GPU timings. Unity describes it as lower overhead than the general-purpose Profiler because it collects deliberately limited information. Check API behavior and platform support for the Unity version in your project. Unity: Frame Timing Manager
For suspected code hotspots, add selected scopes
Instrument only code regions that can answer a specific question, such as a costly update, simulation step, or asset operation. In Unity, ProfilerMarker provides named scopes for targeted code-level visibility. Unity says marker Begin and End calls are conditionally compiled with no execution overhead in non-development builds; the marker field itself remains and uses memory equivalent to an IntPtr. Unity’s ProfilerRecorder can collect profiler counter data in the Editor and Development Players and gives code dynamic control over whether a recorder is attached. Dispose of recorders when they are no longer needed, following the API example for the project’s Unity version. Avoid turning on deep profiling as a default: Unity warns that it adds substantial overhead and can skew execution time.
For Unreal, use traces deliberately
Unreal Insights records frame-by-frame data for later review, but profiling competes with the game for CPU, RAM, and disk. Epic recommends starting with built-in trace event types before adding custom ones. Scoped CPU timer macros, including the TRACE_CPUPROFILER_EVENT_SCOPE_ family, make code regions visible in Timing Insights. Static labels have less performance and memory overhead than dynamic strings. Epic: Introduction to Performance Profiling and Configuration in Unreal Engine Epic: Trace in Unreal Engine

Use counters for values that change over time, and bookmarks for infrequent game-state changes. Epic advises against using bookmarks for high-frequency changes; timers or counters are better suited to those. Unreal Insights’ 4.27 overview recommends running the analysis tool on another machine to minimize impact. That recommendation is specific to the 4.27 documentation, so confirm the appropriate workflow for the engine release in use. Epic: Unreal Insights Overview (Unreal Engine 4.27)
Read the timings, not just the FPS average
A single average FPS figure can conceal occasional slow frames. Inspect frame-time behavior and slow-frame events, then compare the timing dimensions your engine exposes:

- Main-thread CPU time: indicates how much time the primary game thread spends doing work.
- Render-thread CPU time: helps identify CPU-side rendering work.
- GPU time: shows time spent executing GPU work.
- Present or v-sync wait: reveals time spent waiting for presentation rather than doing CPU or GPU work.
These values help distinguish a likely CPU limit, GPU limit, presentation wait, or a more balanced constraint. A timing capture is more diagnostic than FPS alone, but it does not by itself prove the cause of every hitch; use a trace to inspect a reproducible slow frame when needed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use deeper traces to investigate, then validate without them
When a hitch or suspected hotspot is repeatable, temporarily increase capture detail and inspect the relevant slow frame or time interval. In Unity, use the Profiler to examine selected markers and counters. In Unreal Insights, use frame and timing views along with built-in timers and counters. Broad or deep collection is an investigative step, not a setting to leave enabled automatically.

After identifying the issue, reduce the collection detail or detach the profiler and rerun the same workload. Compare instrumented and less-instrumented runs on the same device and build conditions to estimate the collector’s effect in your project. Epic explicitly cautions that profiling uses resources shared with the game; neither engine documentation establishes a universal overhead percentage for every project.
Quick Recap
A practical measurement loop
- Fix the test conditions. Select a representative device, build, scene or gameplay route, and repeatable event.
- Capture a light baseline. Use frame timing for overall CPU/GPU diagnosis, or a small number of targeted scopes for a suspected code region.
- Log the configuration. Note engine version, device, build type, enabled modules or events, workload, and capture window.
- Investigate a specific problem. If a hitch remains unexplained, temporarily collect a deeper trace and inspect the relevant frame or interval.
- Check measurement cost. Reduce detail or disconnect the profiler and repeat the workload; use the observed difference from your own project rather than a generic overhead claim.
- Retest after changes on target hardware. Use Editor measurements for iteration, then confirm conclusions on the platform that matters.
