You cannot make AI stop inventing TypeScript APIs or guarantee its code is correct, but you can catch some errors early by combining compiler diagnostics with tests that describe the behavior you actually need. Treat them as separate verification gates: TypeScript checks selected static properties of the code, while tests exercise specific runtime behavior. Neither substitutes for reviewing whether the requirements and assertions are right.
What compiler checks and tests can—and cannot—catch
| Check | What it examines | What a passing result means | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| TypeScript compiler diagnostics | Static issues detectable under the project’s TypeScript version, configuration, and included files, such as type mismatches and certain suspicious expressions. | The compiler reported no errors among the checks that were enabled and the files it examined. | That the implementation matches user intent, external data has the claimed shape at runtime, or the program behaves correctly in every situation. |
| Behavioral tests | Runtime behavior exercised by their assertions in the configured test environment. | The selected assertions passed for the cases that ran. | Behavior the tests did not exercise, or whether the assertions themselves encode the right requirement. |
TypeScript’s strict option enables a family of stricter checks, including checks such as noImplicitAny and strictNullChecks. The exact checks depend on the compiler version and configuration. TypeScript 5.6 also introduced diagnostics for some expressions it can identify as always truthy or always nullish; the same release documents --noCheck, which skips full type checking. See the TypeScript 5.6 release notes.

A check can only catch what the project asks it to check. The TypeScript handbook’s discussion of any explains that it allows arbitrary property access without checking. Other permissive types, explicit bypasses, or files missing from the compiler’s project can similarly leave assumptions unchecked. Inspect the project’s tsconfig and scripts rather than assuming that a successful command means every relevant file was checked.

The handbook contrasts any with unknown, which requires narrowing before use. For external input, validate its shape at runtime and test important behavior; a TypeScript annotation does not make incoming data trustworthy.

Use a small, repeatable feedback loop
Work from the requirement, not from the generated code’s explanation. A useful sequence is requirement → failing test → implementation → compiler and test run → review and refinement.
- Make the requirement observable. Specify relevant inputs, outputs, edge cases, and failure behavior. Treat the agreed requirement as the oracle; plausible-looking code is not evidence that it is satisfied.
- Write a focused test first. Choose an example that distinguishes the required behavior from likely mistakes. Jest’s Getting Started guide shows the basic test-and-assertion structure. Run the test against the current implementation or a minimal placeholder and confirm that it fails for the missing behavior.
- Request or write the smallest implementation that can satisfy the test. Keep the change narrow so failures and diagnostics are easier to interpret. Check generated imports, options, methods, and dependency APIs against the actual package types and documentation.
- Run the project’s TypeScript check explicitly. Verify which files the configured project includes and which checks are enabled. A strict configuration can strengthen checking, but does not turn types into a proof of correctness.
- Run the behavioral tests. Review whether their assertions cover the requirement, relevant boundaries, error paths, and integration points. Select unit, integration, or end-to-end tests according to the behavior at issue.
- Investigate every failure. A diagnostic can reveal a real mismatch, an inaccurate type boundary, or a configuration issue. Do not blindly edit until the error disappears; determine which explanation fits.
- Keep both checks in the normal verification path. Run them locally and in CI, with separate commands where needed, so a transpilation step does not silently replace type checking.
The test-first step is useful only when the test expresses the requirement independently. If an assertion merely mirrors the generated implementation, the test and code can agree and still be wrong. Add cases for boundary values, missing or malformed input, error paths, and interactions when they matter. A unit test cannot establish that an external integration works; use a test at the appropriate boundary.

- TypeScript implements a superset of syntax for strictly typed development, facilitating deep static analysis and enhanced development environment integration. The compiler translates source into standard script formats, ensuring parity across any runtime.
- TypeScript is ideal for front-end developers, full-stack engineers, and software architects who build large-scale web applications. It serves those looking to improve code excellence, reduce bugs through static checking, and maintain complex projects more.

Make sure Jest is not standing in for the compiler
Jest can run TypeScript through different transformations, and the distinction matters. Its TypeScript setup documentation states that Babel’s TypeScript support transpiles code but does not type-check tests. If a project uses Babel, retain a separate TypeScript check or use a type-checking setup such as ts-jest. Confirm the project’s actual transformer instead of assuming that a green Jest run checked types.

The Jest 30 upgrade guide sets Node.js 18.x and TypeScript 5.4 as minimum versions for Jest 30, and notes that Jest 30 drops support for Node 14, 16, 19, and 21. Check the guide and package requirements for the exact versions you install; these are not universal requirements for every Jest release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose compiler emission behavior deliberately
Type-checking and emitting JavaScript are related but distinct concerns. TypeScript’s noEmitOnError option controls whether compiler output files are emitted when errors are reported. It can help prevent output from being generated after a failed check, but it does not make a clean build a correctness proof. Check the project’s build command and configuration to understand whether it type-checks, emits, or does both.
Keep compiler diagnostics and tests active as complementary gates: one can expose certain statically detectable mistakes, and the other can reveal failures in the behaviors its assertions exercise. They cannot establish that an AI-generated implementation meets an untested requirement or handles every runtime condition.
