You can cast an MKV video from Android if the playback app can send it and the TV or streaming device supports the file’s video and audio codecs. MKV is a container—not a guarantee that a particular TV can decode what is inside it. A file that plays on your phone may still fail on the receiver.
What determines whether an MKV will cast?
Compatibility depends on three parts working together: the file’s tracks, the app sending or playing the file, and the receiving TV or streaming device. Android’s media-format documentation includes Matroska, but Android playback support does not establish that a separate Cast receiver supports the same file. Google lists formats by receiver, so check the exact receiving model rather than relying on the .mkv extension.

Cast an MKV using VLC for Android
VLC for Android documents casting to Chromecast and streaming to UPnP renderers. It is a practical first option for a local MKV, but VLC’s casting feature does not promise that every file will work with every receiver.

Check whether your TV can receive Cast
Google says, “Many TVs released after 2020 support Cast, though some earlier models do as well.” That is a general guide, not confirmation for an individual television. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact model. If the TV lacks a suitable receiver, Google identifies Chromecast with Google TV as an option for adding a Cast destination; that device, like a built-in receiver, has its own format limits.

Why does an MKV play on my phone but not on the TV?
The phone and the receiver may support different video or audio formats. The MKV container can hold different tracks, so identify the file’s video codec and audio codec, then compare both with the supported formats for the exact receiver. This is particularly useful when playback starts but the picture freezes, sound is missing, or the receiver never begins playing.

- Chromecast Built-in: Easily cast movies, shows, and photos from your Android or iOS device to your Android TV
- Easy Setup: Access your Google account and configure the device, language and Wi-Fi network
- Receiver not listed: Confirm the TV or streaming device supports Cast or the renderer type VLC is looking for, and check that both devices are available on the same network.
- Video plays without sound: Check the audio track’s format against the receiver’s supported formats; video and audio compatibility are separate.
- Playback freezes or does not start: Compare both tracks with the receiver’s format limits. The extension alone cannot identify the cause.
To narrow down a specific failure, note the Android phone model, TV or streamer model, player app, and the MKV’s video and audio codec information. Without those details, compatibility cannot be confirmed for a particular setup.

Consider a separate receiver only if the TV has no suitable Cast destination or its built-in receiver is not appropriate for the file. A receiver can add a casting target, but it does not remove codec restrictions; check its supported video and audio formats before choosing it. Google’s format documentation lists support for its individual Cast products, including Google TV Streamer.
