To cast a Chrome tab from a Mac, open the tab, then select More > Cast, save, and share > Cast in Chrome and choose your Chromecast or other Google Cast receiver. To end the cast, open the Cast control beside the address bar and select Stop casting.
Before you start
- Update Chrome to the latest version available for your Mac.
- Connect the Mac and Chromecast or other receiver to the same Wi-Fi network, with a strong connection.
- Use a compatible receiver: Google lists Chromecast, Chromecast Ultra, Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer (4K), and TVs with Google Cast. A new device is not required if you already have one. See Google’s current list of supported receivers.
Chrome menu labels can vary slightly by version or language.

Cast one Chrome tab
- Open Chrome on your Mac and navigate to the tab you want to show.
- Select More > Cast, save, and share > Cast.
- Choose your Chromecast or other Google Cast receiver from the list.
If the receiver is already playing something, starting your cast replaces its current content. You can add the Cast button to Chrome’s toolbar as a shortcut if you cast often.
Stop casting
- Select the Cast control to the right of Chrome’s address bar.
- Select Stop casting.
What tab casting shows and where audio plays
Tab casting mirrors the selected Chrome tab: the video or images appear on both the Mac and TV. Audio from the cast tab plays on the TV, while audio from other tabs and apps continues on the Mac. This is different from casting the entire screen, where audio may remain on the Mac.

Choose a tab cast when you want to show just a page and keep other Mac apps out of view. Choose screen casting when you need to show content outside Chrome, such as another app. Google describes both options in its Chrome casting instructions. Some legacy plugins are not supported when casting a tab.
If your Chromecast does not appear
Work through these checks in order. Google’s Cast destination troubleshooting guide covers these discovery issues.

- Check Wi-Fi: Confirm that both devices are on the same network and that the connection is stable.
- Allow Local Network access on newer macOS: On macOS 15 or later, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network and allow Chrome to discover devices.
- Update and restart: Update Chrome, then restart the streaming device and the Mac.
- Check network filtering: A VPN or proxy, or firewall rules blocking local communication, can prevent discovery. Check whether Chrome or network rules are blocking the local connection; do not disable firewall protection broadly.
- Verify receiver setup: If it is still missing, make sure the streaming device was set up correctly and follow Google’s device-specific troubleshooting steps.
Mac compatibility for video casting
Google publishes Mac hardware and operating-system thresholds for video casting on its minimum system requirements page. These are compatibility specifications, not study results. Google notes that a Mac below those requirements may still project pages, images, and slideshows, but video may not work well.
