Discard anything labeled single-use, clean reusable sensor bodies only as directed, and prepare clean, dry skin before applying a new patch or sensor. If you develop significant irritation or inflammation, remove the device and contact a healthcare professional.
Start by checking which parts can be reused
A skin-worn wearable may be a single-use sensor, or it may have a reusable sensor body and a disposable adhesive patch. Do not assume the whole assembly is reusable, washable, or waterproof. Check the instructions for your exact model and market for the reuse rule, approved cleaning method, water precautions, skin site, and what to do if the adhesive lifts.

For example, Abbott says not to reuse FreeStyle Libre sensors or applicators in its U.S. safety information. Philips says its ePatch electrode patch is single-use and cannot be reused after separation from the ECG recorder. By contrast, the SENS motion support page describes removing and discarding used patch material, then cleaning the sensor for reuse; the page cautions that some information may be outdated, so confirm the current instructions supplied with your device and patch.
Remove the used wearable and adhesive gently
Use the removal method stated in the device instructions. If you consider an adhesive remover, follow its label as well as the wearable maker’s directions. Dexcom lists medical adhesive products and removal wipes as possible aids, but says its removal techniques summarize an independent clinical article and have not been tested or endorsed by Dexcom.

Prepare skin before the next application
Choose a site approved for your device. Clean and completely dry the skin, and remove traces of old adhesive before applying a fresh patch or sensor. Dexcom’s UK guidance for the G6, ONE, ONE+, and G7 calls for a flat, clean, completely dry site and advises avoiding moisturizers and body oils at the intended insertion area. Abbott’s U.S. FreeStyle Libre safety information likewise advises cleaning and drying the application site and changing sites for the next sensor. Follow the current, market-specific instructions for your own model.

Do not use an overpatch, medical tape, or a barrier product unless the maker’s instructions permit it for that device. Dexcom says third-party underpatches are not tested by the company; its guidance on barrier products should not be treated as advice for other wearables. If a patch or sensor begins to lift, follow the device-specific instructions rather than assuming it can be pressed back into place.
