Iron ore prices affect Fortescue most directly through the price it realizes on shipments: that feeds revenue and, after costs, earnings. Its share price can respond as investors revise expectations for cash flow, dividends and risk, but there is no fixed formula linking a change in iron ore to a change in Fortescue shares.
How do iron ore prices affect Fortescue?
Fortescue says most of its iron ore sales are exposed to prevailing market prices. Many contracts are provisionally priced, with final pricing set using relevant indices on or after a vessel reaches its discharge port. The timing can therefore matter: a reported sale may be provisionally valued before its final price is established. Fortescue FY24 Annual Report

The benchmark is not the same as Fortescue’s realized price. Realization can differ with product characteristics, contract timing and other factors. Fortescue reported a FY25 hematite realized price of US$85 per dry metric tonne (dmt), down from US$103/dmt in FY24; the FY25 figure was 84% of the Platts 62% CFR Index. Fortescue FY25 Annual Report

Does a higher iron ore price mean higher Fortescue profits?
Generally, a higher realized price raises revenue and margins if shipments, product mix, costs, currency and other conditions stay constant. It does not guarantee higher profit: costs can rise, shipments can change, and the benchmark may not move one-for-one with Fortescue’s realized price.
From realized price to revenue
A useful simplified model is realized sales price multiplied by saleable tonnes, adjusted for product mix, freight treatment and contract pricing. It explains the direction of the relationship, but is not a company-published exact revenue equation.
Fortescue’s FY25 reporting identified lower average realized prices as the primary reason for lower revenue and underlying EBITDA. Shipments, price-linked costs, foreign exchange and other cost movements also affected the results. In FY26, the company reported total iron ore shipments of 201.3 million tonnes and revenue of US$17.0 billion. FY25 Annual Report; FY26 Results Presentation
Costs and earnings
A price increase tends to improve the amount left after costs, but some costs may also move with prices. Fortescue said price-linked costs partially offset the realized-price effect in FY25. For FY26, it reported hematite C1 cost of US$18.74 per wet metric tonne (wmt). C1 cost is a unit-cost measure, while the realized price above is stated per dry tonne; those figures should not simply be subtracted from each other because both the units and scope differ. For context, Fortescue reported FY26 underlying EBITDA of US$8.6 billion and underlying NPAT of US$3.5 billion. These are company-reported full-year results, not estimates of what a particular iron ore price would produce. FY26 Results Presentation
Currency and operating assumptions
Fortescue reports in US dollars, while its shares trade in Australian dollars. AUD/USD movements can affect translated earnings and investor expectations. The company’s FY27 guidance used an assumed AUD:USD exchange rate of 0.70; that is an assumption for the guidance, not a forecast or guarantee of the exchange rate.
With FY26 results, Fortescue guided to 197–207 million tonnes of total shipments and hematite C1 costs of US$20.50–US$21.75/wmt for FY27, using that 0.70 exchange-rate assumption. These ranges describe guidance, not outcomes. FY26 Results Presentation

Final pricing for most provisionally priced contracts is determined using indices on or after vessel arrival at discharge, according to Fortescue’s FY24 financial-risk disclosure. At 30 June 2024, 4.6 million tonnes of sales remained provisionally priced. Fortescue estimated that a 2% movement in realized price on those sales would affect profit by US$6 million before tax, holding other factors, including foreign exchange, constant. This was a dated sensitivity for outstanding provisional sales on that reporting date—not a sensitivity for all company sales, a full year, or a general price change. FY24 Annual Report

Why does Fortescue’s share price move when iron ore prices change?
The effect runs through expectations rather than an accounting formula. A change in expected iron ore prices may alter forecasts for realized prices, revenue and margins. Investors can then revise expectations for earnings, free cash flow, distributions and risk, and value the shares differently.
Each link depends on other assumptions. Share prices can also respond to production and cost news, currency, capital spending and allocation, performance of Fortescue’s energy business, interest rates, risk appetite and broader market movements. The company disclosures cited here do not establish a numeric sensitivity from iron ore prices to Fortescue’s share price; a specific share-price impact should not be inferred from a price move alone.
How to compare iron ore price scenarios
A scenario is useful only when its assumptions are visible. When comparing a higher- and lower-price case, check which of these inputs change and which are held constant:
Recommended Free Tools
- Realized price: the benchmark, product-specific realization and contract-pricing timing.
- Volume and mix: shipment tonnes, hematite versus magnetite mix, and operational disruptions.
- Costs: C1 costs, price-linked costs, fuel, freight and changes in unit costs.
- Currency: the AUD/USD assumption and its effect on reported or translated results.
- Period and valuation: whether the scenario concerns a fiscal year, expected or realized outcomes, cash flow or distributions.
Changing only the benchmark while assuming every other factor is fixed can help illustrate direction, but it is not a forecast of earnings or the share price.
