To capture a website from an AWS browser located in India, run your capture in either Mumbai (ap-south-1) or Hyderabad (ap-south-2). For a custom or batch workflow, use a Lambda function with headless Chrome and save the image to Amazon S3. For scheduled availability and latency monitoring that also keeps UI screenshots, use CloudWatch Synthetics. AWS documents Playwright browser layers for both Indian regions, but check the current layer and version for your chosen region before deploying.
Choose the AWS approach for the job
| Approach | Best suited to | Browser evidence | Screenshot handling | Regional setup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Custom Lambda with Puppeteer | On-demand captures, custom logic, or a batch pipeline | An AWS Architecture Blog example packages Puppeteer and headless Chrome in a Lambda container. | The example writes images to S3 and uses a second Lambda to asynchronously fan out over a URL list. | Deploy the function in the Indian region where you want the browser to run. |
| CloudWatch Synthetics | Scheduled synthetic checks for endpoint availability and latency, with UI screenshots | AWS’s regional Synthetics layer table lists Playwright layers for Mumbai (ap-south-1) and Hyderabad (ap-south-2). |
Canaries can store UI screenshots. | Choose the region and verify its currently supported browser, runtime, and layer version. |

Run a custom screenshot pipeline with Lambda and S3
This option gives you control over the capture logic and output workflow. AWS’s example uses a Lambda container image with Puppeteer and headless Chrome; the function receives a URL and bucket name, captures an image, and stores it in S3. A separate function can asynchronously invoke the capture function for each URL in a list. The example establishes the architecture, not a ready-made deployment for every account or region.
Deployment decisions to make first
- Region: Select Mumbai (
ap-south-1) or Hyderabad (ap-south-2) and deploy the browser compute there if its network origin must be in that region. - Network access: Ensure the function has an outbound route to the target website. If it runs in a VPC, check that the VPC configuration permits the required egress.
- Storage permissions: Grant only the S3 write permissions and bucket access the capture function needs.
- Readiness and failure behavior: Define what counts as a loaded page, how long to wait, and what to do when navigation fails, a redirect occurs, or a site requires authentication.
- Browser packaging: Package a compatible headless Chrome binary and Puppeteer in the Lambda container. The AWS example demonstrates this container-based approach; browser binaries and runtime compatibility are deployment details to verify for your build.
Capture function shape
The capture function should accept a URL and destination bucket, launch headless Chrome, navigate to the URL, capture the required scope, and upload the resulting image to S3. Keep the browser launch and page navigation timeouts bounded, and return the S3 key along with a clear success or failure result. The AWS Architecture Blog example documents this pattern; adapt its packaging and permissions to your account rather than assuming a browser binary or bucket is present automatically.
Scale to a list of URLs
For batch capture, separate coordination from browser work: a fan-out Lambda accepts the URL list and asynchronously invokes the capture Lambda once per URL. Set concurrency and retry behavior deliberately, and make output keys unique enough that concurrent captures do not overwrite one another. This separation follows the AWS example architecture; the appropriate concurrency, timeout, and retention settings depend on your workload.
Use CloudWatch Synthetics for recurring checks
Canaries are the better fit when screenshots are part of recurring synthetic monitoring rather than a standalone image-generation pipeline. AWS describes canaries as checking endpoint availability and latency and storing load-time data and UI screenshots. The Synthetics debugging documentation lists Playwright support in both Mumbai and Hyderabad.
- Choose the Indian AWS region in which the canary should run.
- Check the current Synthetics regional layer table for that exact region and the browser/runtime you intend to use. Use the currently listed layer version rather than copying an old ARN from an example.
- Configure the canary’s script to visit the endpoint, wait for the state you need to observe, and capture a screenshot.
- Set the schedule and retention to match the monitoring requirement, then verify that the canary’s run artifacts include the expected screenshot.
Layer names, ARNs, and versions are mutable operational details. Confirm them at deployment time; a version listed for one browser or region should not be assumed to apply to another.

Choose the right screenshot scope
- Viewport: Captures the currently visible browser area. Use it to inspect what a visitor sees without scrolling.
- Element: Captures a specific component, such as a status panel or product card. Playwright supports element screenshots.
- Full page: Captures the full scrollable page in one image. Use it for long-page review or archiving; Playwright documents full-page screenshots.
For visual regression checks, save a reference image and compare later captures against it. Playwright documents snapshot updates for cases where the reference page has changed; update baselines intentionally so a real visual change is not silently treated as the expected state.
Troubleshoot common capture failures
The screenshot shows a loading state or incomplete page
Navigation completion does not necessarily mean the content you care about is ready. Select a readiness condition that matches the target page, such as waiting for a meaningful selector or for a known application state, and test it against that site. Pages that load content lazily may need scrolling or another explicit wait before capture.
The screenshot is blank or navigation fails
Check that the Lambda has outbound network access to the target and that its timeout allows enough time for navigation. If the function runs inside a VPC, verify its egress path. Also inspect redirects and the target’s response rather than treating every browser launch as proof that the page loaded.
The capture is missing content below the fold
Use full-page capture when the desired output is the whole scrollable page. If the page loads images or sections only after scrolling, make the capture workflow trigger that loading before taking the screenshot.

Provide authentication through an appropriate, securely managed mechanism and test the resulting browser state. Do not assume an anonymous capture will match a signed-in user’s page; cookies, account state, and access controls can change what is rendered.
A Synthetics canary cannot find its browser layer
Check the region-specific layer table again and confirm that the browser, runtime, and layer version match. The listed versions can change, and a layer for another region is not a substitute for the selected region’s current entry.
The page differs from what an Indian user sees
A browser running in an Indian AWS region does not guarantee identical content for every person in India. Cookies, account state, DNS, site geolocation rules, and edge routing can also influence the response.

For a one-request capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF. The service is a website screenshot API and MCP server from ScreenshotNeo. It accepts consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does capturing from Mumbai prove a website shows the same page to every user in India?
No. A regional browser origin is only one factor; cookies, account state, DNS, geolocation rules, and edge routing may also affect the page.
Can a Playwright screenshot capture just one element instead of the entire page?
Yes. Playwright supports element screenshots as well as viewport and full-scrollable-page captures.
