Choose a capture route
A browser pool provides remote browser sessions or capture capacity without requiring your application to run and manage a local browser for every job. The integration determines how the agent requests a capture and what it receives: an image response, bytes or a saved file, or image data inside a larger agent response.

These approaches are not interchangeable in every detail. For example, capture modes, output format, wait behavior, and session lifetime are integration-specific. The official documentation does not establish comparable independent performance, reliability, price, or success-rate data across providers, so choose by workflow and required output rather than an assumed speed or quality ranking.

Decide what the screenshot should contain
Viewport
A viewport capture shows the currently visible browser area. It is appropriate for a screenshot of the page as a visitor initially sees it or for a state reached after interaction. It does not imply that content farther down the document is included.

Full page
A full-page capture extends beyond the visible viewport. Use an API or browser screenshot method that explicitly supports full-page capture. For pages that load sections or images as the user scrolls, scroll through the page before the final capture and verify the result; scrolling can prompt lazy content to load but does not guarantee every site will render it.
Element or clipped region
An element capture targets a selector such as a chart or product card. A clip capture targets a rectangular region. Browserless’s Screenshot API documents full-page, selector, and clip options; its browser-agent screenshot tool also documents full-page, selector, and clip targets, which are mutually exclusive for that tool. Check the chosen integration’s option names and combinations rather than assuming one provider’s controls work in another.
Use an MCP browser agent when interaction comes first
This route suits an agent that needs to inspect the live page and reach a particular state before saving an image—for example, opening a menu or moving through a page flow. Browserless documents an MCP browser agent that can navigate, inspect a snapshot, interact with page elements, and take a screenshot. Its sessions are one-shot by default, with an option to keep a session across calls.

- Configure the MCP client with the browser service and its credential, following the provider’s current setup instructions. Do not put a real token in source control, prompts, logs, or captured output.
- Ask the agent to open the target URL and inspect the page or snapshot.
- Have it perform only the necessary interaction to reach the target state, then wait for the relevant content.
- Call the screenshot tool with exactly one target mode: full page, an element selector, or a clip region.
- Save or inspect the image returned by the client. Confirm the page reached the intended state; a tool returning an image does not prove that the correct content loaded.
Browserless’s separate Agent Run API returns a visible-viewport PNG in a base64-encoded screenshot field, not a full-page image or URL. Its documented cap for that field is 5 MiB (5,242,880 bytes); check the API reference for current details before depending on that limit. If you need a long full-page image, use a route that expressly supports full-page capture.
Call a screenshot REST API for a direct URL capture
A direct screenshot endpoint is useful when the agent already knows the URL and does not need to change page state. Browserless documents its Screenshot API as a POST request to /screenshot, accepting a URL and Puppeteer-style options and returning an image such as PNG, JPEG, or WebP. Its quickstart shows full-page PNG capture; documented settings include viewport, device scale factor, quality, clip, and selector capture. Consult its current API documentation for the required endpoint authentication and request schema rather than guessing a token format.
For long pages with lazy-loaded material, the provider recommends enabling page scrolling before capture and using full-page mode as needed. Treat that as a technique to try, then inspect the output for missing sections or assets.

Connect Playwright or Puppeteer to a hosted browser
If your application already controls browser actions in code, connect the automation library to the provider’s remote browser endpoint, navigate, wait for the intended state, take the screenshot, and close the connection even if capture fails. Browserless provides connection examples for Playwright and Puppeteer; Playwright documents viewport and full-page screenshot methods. The placeholder endpoint below must be replaced with the exact WebSocket or connection URL from your browser provider, including its required credential.

}Use the connection method and endpoint format documented by your provider; not every hosted endpoint uses the same Playwright transport. Replace domcontentloaded with a wait suited to the page, or explicitly wait for a selector that signals the target content is ready. A generic wait such as network idle is not a guarantee that every visual asset or third-party widget has finished rendering.

For Puppeteer, use the provider’s documented remote connection method, then call its page screenshot method and close the browser in a finally block. Browserless’s examples show this cleanup pattern. Do not copy a made-up endpoint or expose the real token in code examples or logs.
Handle output and page readiness deliberately
- Image response: a direct API may return the image as the response body; write those bytes to a file or pass them to the next step.
- Bytes or saved file: Browserless BAP screenshot methods return image bytes and can optionally write to disk in supported Node.js and Python environments.
- Encoded agent result: an agent-run response may embed an image as base64. Decode it before treating it as a file, and account for the endpoint’s documented size cap.
- Wait for the right signal: wait for navigation, a relevant selector, images, or fonts when those are necessary. BAP documents image and font wait options. Check the screenshot rather than assuming a wait condition implies visual completeness.
- Lazy-loaded content: scroll through the page before capture when lower sections load on demand, then take the full-page image if supported.
- Automation blocks: a site may block or alter automated browsing. Browserless warns that this can affect captures; a successful response alone does not prove that the page rendered normally.
Screenshots are useful as visual records, but they are not always the best interface for an agent that must locate and operate controls. Playwright’s guidance distinguishes screenshot-based visual inspection from snapshots used to find and act on page elements; use DOM or accessibility information for interaction when that is more reliable, and capture an image when the visual state itself matters.

Is a screenshot the same as a page snapshot?
No. A screenshot records rendered pixels; a snapshot can expose structure useful for locating and operating elements. Choose based on whether the agent needs visual evidence or actionable page structure.

Can one browser-pool screenshot request work for every provider?
No. Endpoints, authentication, supported target modes, waits, and response formats vary. Follow the documentation for the specific service and integration you use.
Can I use an AI agent to save a PDF instead?
