In Chrome DevTools, enter the viewport dimensions in Responsive mode and use More options > Capture screenshot. For repeatable captures, use Playwright and set the viewport before navigating. A screenshot records one moment and context; it does not prove a universal or permanent ranking position.
What a SERP width comparison can—and cannot—show
A set of screenshots can document how a particular Google results page appeared at specified viewport sizes: which modules were visible, their order, and what fit above the fold. It cannot by itself establish that width caused a difference in rankings. Google says results can vary with time, location, language, device type, recent searches, and personalization. Its help page explains: “You may get the same or similar results to someone else who searches on Google Search. But sometimes, Google may give you different results based on things like time, context, or personalized results.” Google Search Help: Why your Google Search results differ from others.

For a useful comparison, treat width as the variable and record the other conditions you know. Keep the viewport height and capture type consistent, and attach the query, market or location, language, date and time, device mode, and account or personalization state to the files or a capture log. Describe findings as observations from those captures, not as a controlled ranking experiment unless the other conditions were genuinely controlled.
Capture SERP screenshots manually in Chrome DevTools
Set exact viewport dimensions
- Open the Google results page for the exact query you want to document.
- Open Chrome DevTools and enable the device toolbar. Select Responsive mode if it is not already active.
- Enter the target width and height directly in the responsive viewport controls. Keep height fixed across captures when width is the comparison variable.
- Wait for the page to settle, then note the query and capture context. Record any visible consent, sign-in, or location state that could affect interpretation.
Chrome documents responsive presets including 320, 375, 425, 768, 1024, 1440, and 2560 pixels. These are convenient starting points, not an SEO standard or an exhaustive list. Choose widths relevant to the comparison, and use exact dimensions rather than assuming a physical monitor or phone width represents the browser viewport. See Chrome for Developers: Simulate mobile devices with device mode.

Choose viewport or full-page capture
In DevTools, open More options > Capture screenshot to save the currently visible viewport. Choose Capture a full size screenshot when you need content below the fold as well. These are different artifacts: a viewport capture shows the initial screen at the selected dimensions; a full-page capture includes the scrollable page. Do not compare one capture type against the other as though they show the same portion of the SERP.
Repeat the same steps at each chosen width. A filename convention such as query-market-language-width-date.png can help, but put the actual values and any unknown context in a companion log. If inspecting responsive changes on your own site, DevTools can also show media-query breakpoints; that is a separate use from comparing Google results.
Automate repeat captures with Playwright
Playwright can open a page with a chosen viewport and save a screenshot. The example below creates a separate page at each width, navigates to a supplied results URL, and saves viewport captures. Set the viewport before navigation: Playwright notes that some sites do not expect phone-sized pages to be resized after they load.

(async () => {
const targetUrl = 'https://www.google.com/search?q=example+query';

const height = 900;
const browser = await chromium.launch();

});
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto(targetUrl, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.screenshot({ path: `serp-${width}.png` });
await context.close();
}
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
This is an illustrative pattern, not a tested guarantee that Google will return a particular page or that the capture reproduces a physical phone. The URL and widths are examples; adapt them to your permitted access method and intended market. Verify the current API syntax against the Playwright version installed in your project. The official Playwright Page API documents page.setViewportSize(), page.screenshot(), the fullPage screenshot option, and viewport configuration through browser.newContext().
Capture full-page images in code
To include content below the fold, change the screenshot call to:
await page.screenshot({ path: `serp-${width}-full.png`, fullPage: true });
Keep full-page captures separate from viewport captures in filenames and comparisons. A long page image can document lower results, but it does not show what a user sees without scrolling.

Use a consistent capture log
For each output, record at least:
- Exact query and results URL
- Viewport width and height, plus whether device emulation was used
- Viewport or full-page capture
- Market or location and language, where known
- Date and time, device type, and account or personalization state, where known
- Any load, consent, or verification state that changed what was captured
Playwright’s screenshot API documents how to set dimensions and save an image; it does not determine whether automated requests to a search provider are permitted for your use case or whether your setup reproduces an individual’s organic results. Check the provider’s applicable terms and your access method separately.

How to compare captures without overstating the result
- Change one factor at a time. Keep height fixed when testing width. If device type, location, language, or account state also changes, note that the comparison has multiple changing conditions.
- Compare like with like. Use viewport captures for initial-screen visibility and full-page captures for below-the-fold content.
- Describe what is visible. Note SERP modules, ordering, and what falls below the fold. Do not convert a screenshot into a claim about permanent rank or all users’ results.
- Keep evidence attached. Include the capture log with exported images so someone reviewing them can interpret the context.
Google notes that newly available pages and the propagation of ranking changes can make results differ over time, alongside location, language, device type, related results, recent searches, and personalization. A difference between two screenshots therefore cannot automatically be attributed to viewport width.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Manual DevTools captures are appropriate for a small number of widths or ad hoc investigation. Playwright is useful when the same capture sequence must be repeated, but each width adds a page navigation and image file; slow loads, verification screens, or changing result content can make a batch inconsistent. Keep timestamps and inspect outputs rather than assuming a completed script means every image represents a fully rendered SERP. Neither documented workflow requires a special monitor, phone, or capture card; the capture is done in browser software.

Troubleshooting common capture problems
The screenshot has the wrong dimensions
Check the Responsive viewport width and height before saving. In Playwright, create the context with the intended viewport before opening and navigating to the page. Do not rely on the outer browser window size as a substitute for the page viewport.
The page changes after resizing
Some sites do not expect a phone-sized page to be resized after load. Set the viewport before navigation and capture a fresh page for each width, rather than loading once and repeatedly changing its dimensions.
The image does not include lower results
A regular screenshot captures the visible viewport. In DevTools, choose Capture a full size screenshot; in Playwright, set fullPage: true. Label those files as full-page captures.

Results differ between runs
Record the timestamp and known search context, then compare only captures with matching context where possible. Google says results can vary by time and other contextual factors, so a different page is not necessarily a width effect.
The automated capture shows a verification or incomplete page
Inspect the saved image and page state instead of treating every output as a valid SERP capture. The Playwright screenshot documentation covers capture mechanics, not guaranteed access to search results. Check your permitted access method and applicable provider terms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a physical phone to capture a mobile-width SERP?
No. Chrome DevTools and Playwright let you set a browser viewport in software; a physical phone is not required for the documented capture workflows.
Do screenshots prove my site’s Google ranking for everyone?
No. They document the results shown for one capture context and moment; Google results can vary across users and circumstances.
