How to Capture SERP Screenshots After Dismissing a Consent Dialog

Dismiss a SERP’s actual consent control, verify the resulting page state, and capture it with Playwright. Learn viewport and full-page options, dialog differences, and an API alternative.

In Playwright, navigate to the search results page, identify and click the consent dialog’s actual visible control, verify the dialog is gone, and then take the screenshot. Consent buttons and labels vary by site, language, and consent choice, so there is no reliable universal selector. The example below shows the sequence; replace its button name with the one shown on your target page.

Capture a SERP after handling its consent UI with Playwright

Install Playwright and its browser before running this Node.js example. Set SERP_URL to the search results URL you want to capture. The example uses an accessible button name, “Reject optional cookies,” only as an example: use the label and choice appropriate to the target page and your test.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const targetSerpUrl = process.env.SERP_URL;
  if (!targetSerpUrl) throw new Error('Set SERP_URL to the target search results URL');

  const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
  const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });

  try {
    await page.goto(targetSerpUrl, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });

    // Replace this example label with the actual consent control on the page.
    const consentButton = page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Reject optional cookies' });
    await consentButton.waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
    await consentButton.click();
    await consentButton.waitFor({ state: 'hidden' });

    await page.screenshot({ path: 'serp.png' });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Run it with SERP_URL set to the exact results URL. If you use another consent choice, such as accepting optional cookies, select the actual corresponding control rather than clicking a button simply because it dismisses the overlay. Playwright recommends handling predictable overlays explicitly in the test flow instead of relying on a locator handler. See the Playwright Page API.

Use the page’s real control and verify the result

Inspect the page in the same locale and browser context as the capture. If the control has an accessible button role and stable name, a role-based locator is usually clearer than a CSS selector. If it does not, identify a target-specific locator, including the relevant frame where necessary. Browserless’s banner-dismissal examples likewise treat selectors as starting points to adapt to the target site: Browserless cookie-consent examples.

Waiting for the chosen control to become visible before clicking and hidden afterward checks that the expected interaction occurred. Some sites replace the banner with a compact consent indicator instead of removing every consent-related element. In that case, verify the expected post-choice state rather than assuming the whole interface must disappear. A timeout often means the label, role, locale, frame, or consent state differs from the example.

Choose viewport or full-page capture

page.screenshot() captures the current viewport by default. For a taller image containing the scrollable page, use:

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
await page.screenshot({ path: 'serp-full.png', fullPage: true });

Full-page capture is not necessary just to clear an overlay; it changes the image scope and can make the result much taller. Playwright also supports screenshot masks and screenshot-only styles, but those visually alter the output. They do not demonstrate that the consent choice was actually made. Use them only when the capture specification explicitly permits masking or hiding content. See the Page API screenshot options.

Distinguish an HTML consent banner from a browser dialog

Most consent interfaces are ordinary page content, such as an HTML banner or overlay. Dismiss those by interacting with the page’s actual control, as in the example. JavaScript alert, confirm, and prompt are different: they are native browser dialogs and require Playwright’s dialog handling.

Without a dialog listener, Playwright automatically dismisses JavaScript dialogs. If you register a page.on('dialog') listener, your handler must accept or dismiss each dialog; otherwise, page actions can stall. Do not use a dialog handler as a substitute for clicking an HTML cookie-consent button. Read the Playwright dialog guide. Selenium also documents separate WebDriver handling for native alerts, prompts, and confirmations: Selenium alerts.

Make repeat captures useful for visual testing

For a one-off screenshot, page.screenshot() saves the current page state. For screenshot comparison in Playwright Test, use toHaveScreenshot(). The assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing the last capture with the baseline. This reduces instability from short-lived visual changes, but it cannot make changing search results or target-specific consent behavior invariant. See the Playwright PageAssertions API.

  • Keep the browser, viewport, and execution environment consistent between baseline and comparison runs.
  • Use the same target URL, locale, and consent choice when those affect the page state.
  • Expect live SERPs and other dynamic page content to change; a stable screenshot assertion does not freeze the underlying results.

Troubleshoot consent and capture failures

  • The locator times out waiting for visibility: The dialog may not have appeared yet, or its wording, role, locale, or frame differs. Inspect the rendered page and update the locator to match the actual control.
  • The click succeeds but the banner remains: The control may have opened a settings panel rather than completed a choice, or the site may show a different post-choice state. Follow the visible flow and wait for the relevant state change.
  • The page action hangs after a dialog handler was added: A native JavaScript dialog may be unresolved. Accept or dismiss it in the handler, or remove the handler if the page uses an HTML consent banner instead.
  • The screenshot still contains an overlay: Confirm the click completed and that the chosen control dismissed the overlay; verify the expected state before capture rather than masking the element by default.
  • The image is unexpectedly tall: Check whether fullPage: true was enabled. Omit it for a viewport-only SERP image.
  • Visual comparisons keep changing: Standardize browser, viewport, and execution environment, and account for dynamic results. Consecutive identical captures help with transient rendering but do not guarantee invariant page content.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does dismissing a consent dialog change the search results?

It can affect what the site stores or displays, but the results themselves remain subject to the search engine’s normal changes. Keep the consent choice consistent when comparing captures.

Can I use this flow with Selenium instead of Playwright?

Yes, but the code above is Playwright-specific. Selenium’s documented alert APIs concern native browser dialogs; an HTML consent banner still requires locating and interacting with its page control.
