Then compare what appeared with Search Console’s performance and indexing data. A screenshot documents one search session; it cannot by itself prove that a migration succeeded or explain a ranking change.
What to capture—and what a screenshot can tell you
Open Google Search in a browser and capture the results page for the exact query you want to track. Save the visible page and, when relevant results are farther down, additional scroll positions. Include the query and capture time in the filename, and keep a note of the conditions.

Search results can vary by time, place, device, and recent search history. Matching the conditions makes two captures more useful to compare, but it does not make results universal or perfectly static. Treat differences as observations from those sessions—not as a definitive ranking measurement. Google describes result variability in its Search Console Performance report guidance.
Do not confuse a results-page screenshot with a screenshot from Search Console’s URL Inspection tool. URL Inspection can show how Google renders a page after a successful live test; it does not show the Google Search results page. Its live-test data also has a different scope from indexed data. Prepare a repeatable before-and-after capture
Choose queries that represent the move
Make a short list of exact queries that matter to the migration. Include branded searches, searches for important pages or products, and queries where you need to see whether the new URL is appearing. Keep the query text exactly as entered so it can be repeated.
Record the capture conditions
For each capture, log the following alongside the screenshot:
- Exact query and capture date and time, preferably in UTC.
- Country or location and search language.
- Device type and viewport dimensions.
- Browser and, if screenshots are automated, the operating system and automation mode.
- Whether you were signed in, plus whether you used a clean browser profile.
A clean profile can reduce variation from account and browsing history. Keep the same setup before and after launch where practical, and note any differences you could not control.
Save a useful record
Capture the browser’s visible results area, then take extra captures after scrolling if a listing you need to monitor is below the fold. Use a consistent filename such as query-slug_2026-10-03T1200Z_desktop.png, and store the conditions in a log or spreadsheet. Avoid relying on a single full-page image if it makes the listings too small to inspect.

Capture the pre-migration baseline
- For every selected query, open Google Search in the recorded browser context and enter the exact query.
- Confirm the location, language, viewport, and profile state match the conditions you plan to use later.
- Save the visible results page and any additional scroll positions needed to show important listings.
- Record the actual capture time and any deviations from your standard setup.
- In Search Console, save baseline Performance report views for the relevant date ranges, queries, and pages. Record clicks, impressions, click-through rate, and average position separately from the screenshots.
Search Console’s Performance report supports filtering by date range, search type, query, and page. Its metrics summarize search activity over a selected period; they are not a visual record of one individual results page. See Google’s Performance report documentation.
Repeat the captures after launch and compare observations
- Repeat each exact query using the same browser and recorded conditions.
- Save the screenshot with the actual post-launch capture time and the same naming convention.
- Note any change in location, language, device, viewport, browser, or profile state.
- Compare whether the expected new URL appears, whether an old URL remains, and whether visible titles, snippets, or result features changed.
- Review Search Console Performance for comparable periods, filtering by the relevant query or page. Interpret clicks, impressions, click-through rate, and average position as trends alongside—not as substitutes for—the screenshots.
A changed listing in one capture may reflect the search context as well as the migration. Use repeated observations and Search Console trends to build a more reliable picture rather than treating one screenshot as a pass/fail test.
Use Search Console for the questions screenshots cannot answer
Check an individual page with URL Inspection
For a new URL that is missing, or an old URL whose status you need to understand, inspect that URL in Search Console. Review indexed information, then run a live test if you need to see how Google can render the page now. Indexed data and live-test results answer different questions; the live test is not a complete substitute for the indexed record, and its rendered-page screenshot is not a SERP capture. Choose migration steps for the kind of move

For URL-changing moves, Google recommends testing redirects and monitoring traffic. Its general guidance says a small-to-medium site may take a few weeks for most pages to move; larger sites take longer. That is guidance, not a guaranteed deadline for an individual migration. Google’s Change of Address documentation says the action lasts 180 days and recommends keeping redirects for at least 180 days, or longer when Search traffic still reaches them. This is operational guidance, not a reason to remove redirects that users or other sites still need. See Change of Address guidance.
Automate captures carefully
For a small query set, manual browser captures make it easy to confirm that the page and conditions are correct. For larger repeated sets, browser automation can reduce repetitive work, but it does not eliminate the need to record the environment or inspect the output.
Playwright supports viewport, element, and full-page screenshots, as well as visual comparisons. Its documentation warns that screenshots can vary with operating system, version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep the capture environment consistent, and inspect visual differences before treating pixel diffs as meaningful: Playwright visual comparisons.

The results differ even though the query is the same
Check the logged time, place, device, language, browser, and profile state. Results can vary across those conditions and with recent search history. Capture again under the same setup and record unavoidable differences rather than treating the discrepancy as proof of a migration issue.

You likely captured URL Inspection’s live-test output. Return to Google Search in the browser and capture the results page itself; use URL Inspection separately to diagnose how Google renders or indexes an individual URL.
A new URL is absent or an old URL remains
First treat the screenshot as an observation, then inspect the relevant new or old URL in Search Console. Check indexed information and, where useful, run a live test. For a domain move, also confirm that redirects and Change of Address requirements are satisfied; for moves without a domain change, follow the applicable URL or hosting guidance above.

Automated visual diffs report many changes
Confirm the operating system, browser and Playwright versions, settings, viewport, hardware, and headed or headless mode are consistent. Then inspect the images: environment differences can create pixel changes that do not represent a meaningful search-result change.
Performance numbers do not match a screenshot
Check that the Search Console date range and query or page filters correspond to the question you are asking. Performance metrics aggregate activity over a period, while a screenshot is one observed page at one time and context; they are not expected to be identical kinds of evidence.
