Capture a page, element, or full page
Call browser_take_screenshot after navigating to the page you want to inspect. The tool’s target can identify an element using a ref from an accessibility snapshot or a unique selector. Full-page capture and element targeting are alternatives: fullPage: true cannot be combined with target.

Choose where the image goes and how it is rendered

For example, filename: "report.webp" selects WebP by its extension unless you explicitly set type. For sharper output tied to the device pixel ratio, set scale: "device"; the default scale: "css" uses CSS-pixel sizing.

Set up the standalone Playwright MCP server
The official getting-started guide shows running the server locally on port 8931, then configuring an MCP client to connect to http://localhost:8931/mcp:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest --port 8931Client configuration varies by MCP client; follow that client’s instructions for where to add the server connection. See the Playwright MCP project and its official documentation. The command uses @latest, so the version resolved can change; check the live documentation against the version you install.

Use screenshots for visual inspection, snapshots for interaction
A screenshot is useful for checking layout, viewing canvas or chart content, and documenting a visual bug. It is a picture, not a reliable way to locate interactive controls for the agent to operate. Use browser_snapshot to read page structure, locate elements, and obtain refs for interaction; then use those refs with the appropriate interaction tools. Playwright’s guidance is: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use browser_snapshot to get refs to interact with.” See the tool guidance.

Troubleshoot common capture issues
- The image only shows the visible screen: that is the default viewport capture. Set
fullPage: trueto include below-the-fold content, and leavetargetunset. - An element capture fails or targets the wrong content: take an accessibility snapshot and use the element’s ref, or supply a unique selector as
target. A screenshot itself is not a source of interaction refs. - The result is inline rather than saved: provide
filename. Relative filenames resolve against the workspace root. - The image format differs from what you expected: set
typeexplicitly, or use a matching filename extension. Without an inferable extension or explicit type, PNG is the default. - The image dimensions are not as detailed as expected: use
scale: "device"for device-pixel-ratio output;cssis the default. - The server does not connect: confirm the server is running with the configured port and that the client endpoint matches it. In the documented standalone example, those are port
8931andhttp://localhost:8931/mcp.
Performance and reliability considerations
The documented screenshot options define scope, file handling, format, and scale, but do not establish capture-time benchmarks or guarantees. Full-page captures include content below the fold and may produce a larger image than a viewport capture. Device-pixel sizing produces higher-resolution output than CSS-pixel sizing. If capture details or setup behavior matter for a particular installation, verify them against the current official documentation for that version.

Can I capture one element and the whole page in the same request?
No. The documented fullPage: true option cannot be combined with target.
