Before capturing, decide whether you need the initial visible screen or the full document. Record the viewport width and height, capture scope, device profile or pixel ratio, and—in Playwright—the screenshot scale. If these settings differ between images, the comparison may reflect more than a responsive layout change.

Capture desktop and mobile widths with Chrome DevTools
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Toggle the device toolbar.
- Select Responsive to enter a custom width and height, or choose a device preset for its configured dimensions. The toolbar also exposes controls for device type, pixel ratio, orientation, and device frame. Chrome DevTools documentation
- Enter your desktop viewport dimensions and capture the page. Then enter the mobile dimensions and capture again. Keep the capture scope the same for both images.
- In the device toolbar, open More options. Choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport or Capture a full size screenshot for the whole scrollable page. Chrome DevTools documentation
Use descriptive filenames so the dimensions and page are clear, such as landing-desktop-1440x900.png and landing-mobile-390x844.png. Those names are a practical convention, not a Chrome requirement.
Automate captures with Playwright
Playwright supports selected desktop, tablet, and mobile device profiles, including settings such as user agent, screen size, viewport, and touch support. You can override a profile’s viewport for a particular capture. The example below saves a viewport screenshot at desktop dimensions, then changes the viewport and saves a mobile screenshot.

import { chromium, devices } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
...devices['Desktop Chrome'],
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
});
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'desktop.png' });
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 390, height: 844 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'mobile.png' });
await browser.close();
This is an illustrative workflow using documented Playwright APIs; it is not a claim that the script was run. See Playwright’s emulation documentation for device profiles and its screenshot documentation for capture details.
Capture the whole page or a specific element
Set fullPage: true to capture content beyond the current viewport:

For a narrower capture, use Playwright’s locator screenshot API to save a selected element rather than the page. The Page API documentation describes page screenshot options, including full-page capture, scaling, and masking elements.
Choose output scale and stabilize comparisons
scale: 'css'produces one image pixel per CSS pixel. Use it when you want output dimensions to correspond directly to CSS-pixel dimensions.scale: 'device'produces device-pixel output. The resulting image may be larger, depending on the device scale factor.- Use the documented masking option for elements that change between captures, such as volatile content, when stable visual comparisons require it.
Full-page screenshots can be very tall, so they are useful for reviewing a document’s overall layout but less suited to comparing what a visitor initially sees. For a first-screen comparison, capture only the viewport.

- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Make the two screenshots comparable
Change the width to test responsive behavior, but keep other capture conditions consistent. Note these settings alongside the images:
- Viewport width and height for each capture.
- Whether each image shows only the viewport or the full page.
- Device type or profile and pixel ratio.
- For Playwright, whether the image uses CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale.
Chrome describes Device mode as a “first-order approximation” of a mobile experience. It does not run the page on mobile hardware, and some mobile characteristics cannot be simulated. Treat emulated screenshots as layout checks, not proof of how the site behaves on an actual phone. Chrome DevTools documentation

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The mobile screenshot still looks like desktop. Check that the device toolbar is enabled and that the responsive width or selected preset is the one you intended. For Playwright, verify the viewport passed to
newPageorsetViewportSize. - The image cuts off content below the fold. You captured the viewport only. In Chrome, use Capture a full size screenshot; in Playwright, set
fullPage: true. - The two images differ in more than layout. Compare viewport height, capture scope, device profile, pixel ratio, and Playwright scale. Align these settings where possible and label them with the files.
- The full-page image is unwieldy. Use a viewport capture to compare the initial screen, or capture a specific element with Playwright when only one region matters.
- The emulated result does not match a phone. Emulation is not actual-device execution. Check on physical mobile hardware if the behavior depends on characteristics Chrome cannot simulate.

FAQ
Can a responsive screenshot prove a page works on every phone?
No. A browser-emulated capture is useful for checking layout at chosen dimensions, but it does not reproduce every mobile-hardware characteristic. Verify on a physical device when actual-device behavior is important.
