To capture a website repeatedly and find out when it changes, either set up a hosted page monitor or build a scheduled browser workflow. A hosted monitor is the simpler route: choose a page or region, set a checking schedule, and review its change alerts. For more control, use Playwright screenshot comparisons, then add your own scheduler, storage, and alerting.
Choose what counts as a meaningful change
Decide what you need to notice before choosing a capture method. A full-page comparison can reveal broad layout changes, while monitoring a specific region focuses attention on a price, headline, button, or other important detail. A smaller target can make reviews more focused; it also means changes outside that target will not be part of the comparison.

Also consider whether the page is visible without interaction. Cookie prompts, dropdowns, login steps, and content revealed by scrolling can affect what the capture sees. Choose a workflow that can reproduce any necessary actions and wait for the page to settle before taking the screenshot.
Option 1: Set up a hosted monitor
A hosted monitor is a good fit if you want recurring checks without maintaining a browser on your own computer. - Add the page. Enter the URL you want checked and confirm that the monitor can access the relevant page.
- Select the capture target. Choose the whole page for broad changes or select the region that contains the information you care about.
- Set the check schedule. Choose an interval appropriate for how quickly the change matters. The useful cadence and available settings depend on the service configuration; do not assume a particular interval or detection time without checking its current options.
- Make the page reproducible. If the target is hidden behind a consent dialog, menu, or other interaction, configure the monitor’s available actions. - Review the baseline and alerts. Confirm the preview shows the intended content, then review later alerts against the before-and-after images and highlighted differences. Treat an alert as a prompt to inspect the evidence, not proof that the change matters.

Option 2: Build a Playwright screenshot workflow
Playwright’s visual comparisons let you establish a screenshot baseline and compare later captures with it. This is a browser-testing feature, not by itself a hosted recurring monitoring service: you need to arrange when the script runs, where screenshots and comparison results are retained, and how failures or differences reach you. Install and create a baseline
The example below uses Playwright Test. It captures a page screenshot named as a visual snapshot. The first run establishes a baseline; subsequent runs compare against that baseline. Keep the page URL and capture conditions consistent between runs.

- Install Playwright Test and its browser, following the current Playwright installation guide.
- Create a test file such as

});- Run the test once to create the reference snapshot, then run it again to compare a new capture against the baseline.
- Review reported differences before updating a baseline. Accept an update only when the new rendering is the intended reference, rather than automatically treating every changed screenshot as correct.
The test runner and browser must be available wherever you schedule later runs. Configure recurrence separately with a CI scheduler or a server’s cron facility, and arrange retention and notifications for your own workflow. The exact scheduler configuration depends on the CI service or machine you use.

Keep captures comparable
Visual comparisons can be affected by the rendering environment, not just by website changes. Playwright warns that browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Use a consistent environment for baseline and later runs, and investigate environment changes before attributing every difference to the site.
Page readiness matters too. Delayed images, animations, dynamic widgets, consent overlays, and navigation after a click can produce incomplete or unstable screenshots. Wait for the content you care about to appear, and reproduce any required interaction before capturing. If the page changes continuously, choose a stable target or a readiness condition rather than relying on an arbitrary immediate screenshot.

Choose a hosted monitor when you want a configured cloud service to check a page and show changes. Choose Playwright when custom browser steps, repository-based baselines, or integration with an existing test workflow are more important and you are prepared to operate the scheduler and review process.

Troubleshoot missed or noisy changes
- The capture is blank or incomplete: Check that the page is accessible and that the target content has loaded before capture. Add an appropriate wait or reproduce the interaction that reveals the content.
- The screenshot contains a consent dialog or popup: Decide whether that overlay is part of what you want to monitor. If not, configure repeatable actions to dismiss it where the chosen tool supports them, and wait for the underlying page to render.
- Every run reports differences: Check for animation, rotating content, dynamic widgets, and changes in the browser or host environment. Narrow the target to the relevant section and stabilize the rendering conditions.
- A meaningful change is missed: Verify that the changed content is inside the selected area and visible at capture time. If it appears only after scrolling, a click, or navigation, configure that action before the capture.
- A Playwright baseline changes unexpectedly: Do not immediately accept the new snapshot. Compare the old and new images, check the runner’s browser and operating environment, and update the baseline only after deciding the new rendering is intended.
- A recurring Playwright run never happens: The screenshot comparison does not schedule itself. Check the separately configured CI schedule or machine scheduler, its access to the browser and test files, and how it reports failed runs.
