Set the browser to a desktop device type and the viewport you want before opening or reloading the product page. In Chrome DevTools, select Desktop in Device Mode; in Playwright, use a desktop browser context and set its viewport before navigation. Then capture the visible viewport or the full page. This can help avoid redirects tied to mobile-device signals, but it cannot guarantee that every site will serve its desktop page: sites may use other redirect rules.
Why a product page may redirect
Some sites may use browser signals such as device type, user-agent, viewport, or touch capability when deciding which experience to serve. Chrome DevTools and Playwright let you configure some of these signals, but their documentation does not establish that every mobile redirect is triggered by them. A redirect can persist even when your browser is configured for desktop.

Chrome Device Mode approximates mobile behavior; it does not run your page on a physical handset. If you need to know how the product page behaves on actual hardware, Chrome recommends remote debugging on a real device. Chrome’s Device Mode guide explains the distinction.
Capture a desktop screenshot in Chrome DevTools
- Open DevTools. Open the product page in Chrome, then open DevTools. You can use Device Mode to set responsive dimensions; if it is active, open its device-type menu and select Desktop rather than Mobile.
- Set the dimensions first. Choose the viewport width and height you want to document before navigating to or reloading the product page. If you are testing a particular desktop layout, use dimensions that reproduce that layout.
- Check the device profile. Do not use a mobile device profile or mobile user-agent when your goal is the desktop experience. Chrome allows device settings to be configured, including a custom device’s user-agent and type. See Chrome DevTools Device Mode and the Chrome DevTools Protocol emulation documentation.
- Load the product page and inspect the result. Note the final URL and whether the page actually renders as desktop. If it still redirects, do not assume the viewport is the cause or that changing it will bypass the site’s rules.
- Capture the page. Open the DevTools Command Menu and choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot to include content below the fold. The precise menu wording may vary with Chrome versions.
Device Mode is useful for a controlled browser capture, not proof of how the site will behave on a physical phone. Chrome describes it as a way to “approximate how your page looks and performs on a mobile device.”

Automate repeatable captures with Playwright
Use Playwright when you need to capture the same desktop context repeatedly. Configure the viewport before navigation: some sites do not expect the page to change size after it has loaded. Device profiles can simulate properties such as user-agent, screen size, viewport, and touch capability; choose a desktop context rather than a mobile profile for this task.

Viewport or full page?
- Viewport: the current visible area, useful when you want to show exactly what fits in the chosen window.
- Full page: the scrollable page beyond the fold, useful for documenting the entire product page in one image. Dynamic or very long pages may need additional checks to ensure all content has loaded.
Choose the method that fits the capture

This is a workflow distinction based on the documented controls, not a speed or performance comparison.
Troubleshooting a redirect or an unexpected screenshot
- The page still redirects to a mobile URL. Confirm the desktop device type and profile, then reload after setting the viewport. If the redirect remains, the site may be using rules beyond the settings you changed; the documented browser controls do not reveal every site’s decision logic.
- The page looks mobile even at desktop dimensions. Check that you have not selected a mobile device profile or mobile user-agent. In Playwright, set the intended viewport before
page.goto()and avoid a mobile device preset. - The screenshot contains only the visible section. Use Chrome’s Capture a full size screenshot or Playwright’s
fullPage: trueoption. - The page changes after resizing. Reload after setting the intended viewport. Some sites choose a layout or destination during initial navigation, so resizing only after load may not reproduce the same result.
- You need to verify an actual phone experience. Use a physical device with remote debugging; Device Mode does not execute the page on a real handset.
