Use Puppeteer’s page.screenshot() after opening the product page and waiting for the content you need to appear. Choose a viewport capture for the visible layout, fullPage for the whole document, clip for a defined region, or an element screenshot for a single product component. The examples below use Puppeteer 25.12.0 API references; check the documentation matching your installed version if its signatures or defaults differ.
Install Puppeteer and capture a product page
The basic workflow is to launch a browser, create a page, set its viewport, navigate to the product URL, wait for meaningful page content, save the screenshot, and close the browser. This runnable ES module writes a PNG to product.png. Replace the URL and illustrative selector with values from the site you are capturing.

}Install Puppeteer in the project using your package manager (for example, npm install puppeteer) and run the file in an environment configured for ES modules. The selector is illustrative, not a selector guaranteed to exist on a particular shop. If the page does not expose a stable product-title selector, use one that identifies the content you actually need or replace the wait with another explicit readiness condition.
The official Puppeteer screenshots guide demonstrates navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2', but that event is not a guarantee that every commerce page has finished rendering. Choose the screenshot area
Use the smallest capture scope that meets the task. A viewport is suited to checking the visible layout; full-page capture shows content beyond the viewport; a clip captures a known rectangle; and an element screenshot isolates one DOM element.

Wait for the element before locating it, then capture it. The selector below is only an example; choose a stable selector on the target page.

Set a deliberate viewport before navigation
Choose dimensions that represent the layout you want to inspect. Set them before page.goto(), especially when emulating a phone-sized layout: Puppeteer notes that changing some mobile or touch settings can trigger a reload. For repeatable comparisons, keep width, height, and device scale consistent; capture desktop and mobile as separate configurations when both are required.

Choose output format and handling
page.screenshot() writes to the path when path is supplied and returns image bytes (Uint8Array) by default. PNG is the documented default; a path extension can determine the format. Screenshot options also include type, quality, omitBackground, fullPage, and clip. Quality does not apply to PNG. Use omitBackground: true when a transparent background is needed, and use base64 encoding only when the caller specifically needs a string rather than bytes.

Make product-page captures repeatable
- Wait for the thing being captured. Navigation completion and product content readiness are different conditions. Use a page-specific selector or other explicit signal when the product details render asynchronously.
- Keep capture settings fixed. Match viewport width, height, device scale, and capture scope when comparing runs.
- Control page state deliberately. Product variant, consent choices, geolocation, and personalization can affect what appears. Check how the target site behaves instead of assuming those states are identical between runs.
- Choose the output for its consumer. Save to a path for a file workflow, retain returned bytes for in-memory processing, or request base64 only when a string representation is needed.
The documentation does not establish one universally reliable readiness event for every commerce site. Treat networkidle2 as a starting point, not proof that all images, variants, or personalization have finished loading.
Common errors and fixes
- Timeout while navigating or waiting. The page may keep network activity open or the selector may not exist. Use a readiness condition appropriate to the target and verify the selector in the page; do not rely on network idleness alone.
- Selector wait times out. Replace the illustrative selector with one present on the product page, and confirm that the expected product content is visible under the current variant or state.
- Element screenshot reports a detached element. The page may have re-rendered after the element was selected. Wait for the updated element and query it again before calling
screenshot(). - Capture has the wrong dimensions or layout. Set the viewport before navigation and check the width, height, and device scale used for the run.
- Output is not the expected format or transparency. Set the screenshot type explicitly when needed; use
omitBackgroundfor transparency. Thequalityoption does not affect PNG. - Browser does not close after an error. Put
browser.close()in afinallyblock, as in the main example, so cleanup runs if navigation or capture fails.
