Use Playwright’s page.screenshot() to capture a product page as a PNG buffer, then pass that buffer to AWS SDK for JavaScript v3’s PutObjectCommand. This uploads directly from memory, without a temporary screenshot file. The example below captures the full page; remove fullPage: true for the visible viewport.
Install the packages and prepare AWS access
Use Node.js with Playwright and the AWS SDK v3 S3 client. From your project directory, install them with:

npm install playwright @aws-sdk/client-s3Set up AWS credentials and a default region for the process before running the script. The SDK’s Node.js default credential provider chain can use configured credentials, so the example does not put access keys in source code. The identity needs permission to write objects to the target bucket and key prefix; follow AWS’s least-privilege guidance rather than granting broader access than the task needs. Capture the page and upload its Buffer
This ES module example navigates to a product URL, waits for the DOM to be parsed, captures a full-page PNG, and uploads it to S3. Replace the example URL and product ID with values from your application.

The bucket and key identify the destination object; ContentType labels the stored image as PNG. AWS’s Node.js example uses this same client-and-command pattern: JavaScript SDK v3 S3 examples. This composition illustrates the APIs; adapt navigation readiness, permissions, key naming, and error reporting to your application.
Choose what to capture
Viewport, full page, or one element
- Viewport: omit
fullPage, or set it tofalse, to capture the current viewport. - Full page: set
fullPage: trueto capture the full scrollable page. Long product descriptions can produce very tall images. - Element: capture a specific region such as a gallery or price panel with a locator:

Format, scale, and repeatability
Playwright supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshots. Choose a format and any applicable lossy-image quality setting based on the downstream consumer and file-size needs. Screenshot options also control whether output is scaled to CSS pixels or device pixels; consider that choice when comparing images or generating retina-sized output. Keep the S3 ContentType consistent with the format you actually request—for example, use image/jpeg for JPEG rather than image/png.
For repeatable captures, use screenshot options such as animation disabling or screenshot-specific styles and masks where they suit the page. Rendering can still vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep the execution environment consistent when capturing visual baselines. Playwright describes these sources of variation in its visual comparisons guidance.
Wait for product content that matters
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' waits for initial document parsing; it does not guarantee that client-rendered product details, images, stock information, or prices are ready. A fixed delay may help with a known site-specific animation, but it is not a generally reliable readiness test. Prefer a page-specific condition, such as waiting for the product title or primary image:

If the page’s important image is lazy-loaded farther down, ensure it is brought into view or otherwise loaded before capturing; a full-page screenshot does not guarantee every site’s lazy content has finished rendering.
Upload from memory or use a temporary file
Direct Buffer upload is a straightforward default: it avoids local file management, and the same bytes returned by Playwright go to S3. If you need a local artifact for debugging, review, or another processing step, save the buffer first and upload the file with an appropriate file-reading approach. That adds local I/O and requires cleanup and disk-space handling; it is unnecessary solely to make the S3 upload work.
For ordinary product-page screenshots, start with PutObjectCommand. If object sizes or upload throughput make multipart handling necessary, AWS SDK v3 provides @aws-sdk/lib-storage; consult the lib-storage package documentation before changing the upload strategy.
Server-side S3 upload and browser CORS are different
This example runs Playwright and the AWS SDK in Node.js, so the upload is server-side and does not require S3 CORS configuration merely for that request. CORS governs whether browser code may make a cross-origin request; it does not grant authorization. IAM or bucket permissions must authorize a write separately. If you move the upload into browser-origin JavaScript, configure suitable CORS rules and separately provide an authorized upload design. AWS explains the distinction in its S3 CORS documentation.

Product pages may show personalized content, account details, or location-specific prices. Decide whether those details should be captured, mask or avoid sensitive areas when appropriate, and set bucket access and retention to match the data you collect.

Use a key that identifies the product and capture without silently overwriting unrelated captures. The example includes a timestamp and viewport in the filename. If the product identifier can contain arbitrary input, normalize it before including it in a key. Keep logs useful for diagnosing failures by recording the URL and key, but never log credentials.

Troubleshoot common failures
- Playwright cannot launch the browser: confirm the package is installed and that the deployment environment has the browser binaries and system dependencies Playwright requires. Install or configure the browsers using the Playwright browser installation guide.
- Navigation times out or the screenshot is incomplete: the page may be slow, blocked, or rendering content after DOM parsing. Check the URL and network access, set a suitable timeout, and wait for a meaningful page-specific selector rather than relying on a universal sleep.
- The capture is blank or missing product details: verify that the selector points to the expected page content and that lazy images or client-rendered details have loaded before capture. Try an element screenshot to isolate the region you need.
- S3 reports missing credentials: ensure the Node.js process can resolve credentials through the configured SDK provider chain. Do not solve this by hard-coding long-lived secrets in application source.
- S3 returns access denied: verify the resolved identity is authorized to put objects in the specified bucket and prefix, and check that the bucket, region, and key are correct. CORS does not fix an IAM authorization failure in this server-side workflow.
- The saved object has the wrong media type: match
ContentTypeto the screenshot format; a PNG buffer should be labeledimage/png. - The browser remains running after an error: keep
browser.close()in afinallyblock, as shown, so capture and upload failures still trigger cleanup.
