Use Playwright to read the product’s displayed price, compare it with a saved price or threshold, and capture a screenshot only when your drop rule is met. Playwright handles browser navigation, locators, and screenshots; your code must define what counts as a price drop and preserve enough product, variant, and currency context to avoid false alerts.
Build the price-drop workflow
- Open the product page. Navigate to the target URL and wait for the price element to be visible. Prefer a locator based on user-facing meaning or a stable test ID when the retailer provides one.
- Read and normalize the price. Convert the displayed text into a comparable numeric amount while retaining currency and the selected product variant. Handle locale-specific decimal and thousands separators deliberately.
- Apply your rule. Compare the current observation with the last saved observation for the same product and variant, or with a configured threshold. Decide how to treat unavailable products, currency changes, and variant changes; those are not necessarily price drops.
- Capture evidence if the rule is true. Save the visible viewport, full page, or a focused product/price element, depending on what context you need.
- Persist the observation. Save the current price and its context for the next check. Define whether this occurs after a successful read, even when no drop occurred.
Playwright describes locators as “the central piece of Playwright’s auto-waiting and retry-ability.” A locator wait is a better readiness check than relying on an arbitrary fixed sleep. See the Playwright locator guide and screenshot guide.

Runnable JavaScript example
The example uses a placeholder test ID and simple dollar-price parsing. Replace the locator, parser, storage functions, and product URL for the actual retailer. It assumes the page displays a price such as $19.99; it intentionally fails rather than silently comparing an unrecognized value.

Install Playwright in your project with npm install playwright; install the browser binaries required by your environment with npx playwright install. The example is an application pattern, not a claim that a particular retailer exposes data-testid="product-price". The first run has no previous value, so it records a baseline but does not claim a drop.

Choose the screenshot scope
| Need | Playwright capture | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Only the price and nearby product details | await price.screenshot({ path: 'price-drop.png' }) |
Focused evidence, but surrounding page context may be missing. |
| Visible viewport | await page.screenshot({ path: 'price-drop.png' }) |
Captures what is currently visible, not necessarily the entire listing. |
| Entire scrollable product page | await page.screenshot({ path: 'price-drop.png', fullPage: true }) |
More context, but a tall page may include dynamic or changing content. |
| Image bytes for storage or processing | const image = await page.screenshot() |
Returns a buffer rather than writing directly to a path. |
Playwright also supports screenshot options for reducing visual instability, including animation handling and screenshot styling. Check the screenshot API documentation for the installed Playwright version and the exact option behavior you need.
Keep comparisons meaningful
- Key history precisely. A saved value should correspond to the same product, selected variant, region, and currency. Otherwise a variant switch or regional price may look like a drop.
- Parse for the retailer and locale. A parser that handles dollar signs and comma grouping is not suitable for every currency or decimal convention. Store currency separately rather than comparing unlike amounts.
- Distinguish price from availability. A page may show a stale price, an unavailable state, or a price that changes after selecting an option. Confirm the relevant state before updating history or taking evidence.
- Wait for a meaningful state. If the price is rendered asynchronously, wait for the price locator or a condition in your application logic. Poll only when the page’s behavior requires it; a fixed delay alone can be both slow and unreliable.
- Make the trigger explicit. A strict lower-than comparison captures any reduction. A minimum currency amount or percentage threshold can reduce noise, but that policy is yours to implement.
Understand what Playwright Test screenshots do
expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() is a visual assertion in the Playwright Test runner. It waits for two consecutive screenshots to stabilize before comparing against a baseline. That stabilization helps with visual regression tests; it does not monitor historical product prices or decide whether the price dropped. Use your own saved-price comparison for that trigger. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The locator times out. The selector may not match the retailer’s page, the price may be inside a frame, or the page may not have rendered the selected product yet. Inspect the page and choose a locator tied to the actual visible price; wait for the correct state rather than increasing timeouts without diagnosing the cause.
- The parser rejects a price. The displayed format may include a currency code, a range, a sale/regular pair, or locale-specific separators. Log the raw text and write a parser for that exact format; do not default an unrecognized price to zero.
- A false drop is reported. Check whether the stored observation belongs to another variant, currency, region, or product. Confirm stock state and whether the page finished updating before comparison.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete. Wait for the target price and any necessary page content before capturing. For lazy-loaded sections, full-page capture can involve content beyond the initial viewport; verify the resulting image against the evidence you need.
- The screenshot changes on every run. Dynamic promotions, animation, timestamps, or chat overlays can alter the image. Use supported screenshot options to disable animations or mask/style unstable elements, and keep the price comparison separate from visual-baseline assertions.
- The browser does not launch. Install the browser binaries for the Playwright package and environment, and check that the runtime supports the chosen browser. In CI, ensure the browser dependencies are available as well as the package.

Does a screenshot API detect a price drop by itself?
No. Your application must read and compare price observations, then request a capture when its rule is satisfied.

Can I use a product page screenshot as a visual regression baseline?
Yes, but a visual-baseline assertion and a historical price comparison answer different questions: one compares rendered images, the other compares stored price values.
