What you need before going live
- Live-stream access: Enable live streaming for your YouTube channel. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- A prepared playlist: Use recordings you are authorized to broadcast, and decide how the playlist should loop or rotate.
- An encoder or hosted service: YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. OBS uses that workflow locally; hosted services have their own setup.
- A plan for continuity: A local stream depends on your computer and connection. For a broadcast over 12 hours, do not assume YouTube will produce one unbroken archive; plan how you will manage the stream and its recordings.
How to set up a continuous playlist with OBS

- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for your channel. If this is your first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream and open its Live Control Room. Copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Prepare the playlist in OBS. Add your video or audio-and-visual source in OBS and configure the media to repeat as needed. Check that the intended visuals and audio are present before going live. Exact playlist controls can depend on how you supply the media to OBS.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key or connect using the available YouTube account workflow. If entering details manually, use the server URL and key from the YouTube stream you created.
- Check output and connection. Use an output bitrate your internet connection can sustain. Watch OBS’s dropped-frame indicator: rising dropped frames can mean the connection is unstable or the bitrate is too high for it.
- Start and verify. Start streaming in OBS, then check the YouTube Live Control Room to confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed and that the picture and sound are correct.
- End deliberately. When stopping, end the broadcast through the encoder and YouTube Studio as appropriate, and verify the stream status in Live Control Room.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you intend to run longer, check YouTube’s current handling and plan for a restart and separate archive rather than relying on one uninterrupted video-on-demand file.
Music rights can stop an otherwise healthy stream
YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can lead to a placeholder image, warning, interruption, or termination. YouTube also notes that a license may not prevent interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID.

Troubleshooting a continuous stream
YouTube does not show the incoming feed
- Confirm that live streaming is enabled; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Check that you copied the server URL and stream key for the correct stream in YouTube Studio.
- Verify OBS is actively streaming and that the Live Control Room shows an incoming signal.
The stream drops frames or stutters
- In OBS, check whether dropped-frame counts are rising. OBS says this can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain.
- Reduce the output bitrate to a level the connection can maintain, then confirm the feed is stable in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- For unattended local streaming, account for the fact that the computer and network remain part of the broadcast path.
YouTube interrupts or terminates the stream
- Review YouTube’s notice for a third-party content match or other live-stream issue.
- Confirm permissions for every track and arrange any required Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder.
- Do not assume a license alone prevents automated interruption.
