To capture the same UI in multiple browsers and viewport sizes with Happo, configure the targets in the integration you use—Storybook, Cypress, Playwright, or Happo’s generic API—then run the captures in CI and review the comparison report. Choose targets that reflect real browser and responsive requirements: every additional component variant, browser, and viewport combination increases snapshot usage.
Choose the Happo integration for your project
Use the integration closest to the way your interface is already represented or tested. Happo documents integrations for Storybook, Cypress, and Playwright, plus a generic API for custom setups. Check the current documentation and package version for the exact configuration syntax before implementing targets; it can change.

- Storybook: Capture stories for representative components and variants. Use interaction testing where a story needs to reach a particular UI state, such as an open menu or an error message.
- Cypress or Playwright: Add Happo captures to existing tests when those tests already navigate to the relevant page, prepare state, or perform interactions.
- Generic API: Use it when your workflow is not built around one of the documented integrations and you want to connect a custom capture process.
Plan browser, viewport, and UI-state coverage
Choose browsers your users actually need
Happo lists Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge, and iOS Safari as browser options. Availability depends on plan: its pricing page lists Chrome and Firefox on Starter; Chrome, Firefox, and Safari on Growth; and Chrome, Firefox, Safari, iOS Safari, and Microsoft Edge on Pro and Enterprise. These plan details were checked on October 3, 2026, and may change; confirm current availability on Happo’s pricing page.
Choose viewports around responsive behavior
Start with widths where the layout meaningfully changes, such as a navigation collapse, column shift, or different content arrangement. Add a viewport only when it tests a distinct behavior or a user-relevant size. Happo’s integration materials describe capturing at different viewport sizes; a Happo vendor blog example uses viewport: '1024x768'. Treat that as an example, not a universal target or guaranteed current configuration syntax.

Capture meaningful states, not just pages
A screenshot comparison is most useful when the UI state is intentional and reproducible. Select stories or tests that cover important component variants and states—for example, loading, error, hover, and open-menu states—rather than multiplying nearly identical captures. Happo defines one snapshot as one component variant in one browser, so additional variants and browser/viewport target coverage increase snapshot usage.
Configure and run captures
- Select the integration. Follow the setup for Storybook, Cypress, Playwright, or the generic API that matches your project.
- Define the states to capture. For Storybook, select the stories that represent important variants. For Cypress or Playwright, add capture calls after the test has reached the intended state.
- Set browser and viewport targets. Use the target configuration supported by your current integration and package version. Do not assume a target example from a blog post is valid for every integration.
- Run the capture workflow in CI. Happo documents CI use for pull-request review. Keep capture runs aligned with the code changes you want reviewers to inspect.
- Review the comparison report. Inspect the side-by-side, diff, or swipe views to judge visual changes. A successful capture run confirms that images were produced; it does not establish that every viewport looks correct.
Estimate snapshot usage before expanding the matrix
Think of the matrix as the combinations of selected UI variants and browser/viewport targets. Since Happo counts a snapshot as one component variant in one browser, adding more states or browser coverage increases usage; viewport-target coverage also contributes to the broader capture matrix. Estimate the effect before enabling a large set of targets, then add coverage where it answers a concrete compatibility question. Happo’s pricing page explains its snapshot definition and plan information.

- Prioritize browser engines and platforms relevant to your audience.
- Use viewport widths that exercise actual breakpoints or distinct layouts.
- Prefer meaningful UI states over repeated captures of a static, unchanged view.
- Review whether the expanded matrix produces actionable diffs or mostly redundant output.
Reduce flaky captures by controlling external requests
Happo’s integration pages describe capture measures intended to improve consistency, including silencing animations and waiting for asynchronous assets and fonts. For additional control, a Happo vendor post dated September 23, 2026 describes a hostname allowlist option for requests made by snapshot workers. Restricting uncontrolled external requests can improve reproducibility, but an overly narrow allowlist can prevent required assets from loading.

Troubleshooting common coverage problems
A browser target is unavailable
Check whether the browser is included in your Happo plan and whether the integration and package version support the target syntax you used. Plan coverage can change, so verify it against the current pricing page and integration documentation.
A capture uses the wrong size or layout
Confirm the configured viewport target in the integration’s current documentation, and check that the test or story is using that target rather than relying on a local browser window size. Verify the example against your installed package version before copying it.

Images differ between runs
Check for animations, fonts, and asynchronously loaded assets that may not be ready at capture time. Use the integration’s documented waiting and animation controls. If a snapshot worker depends on external hosts, inspect blocked requests before tightening or changing its hostname allowlist.
The report is noisy or usage grows faster than expected
Review the variants, browsers, and viewport targets being captured. Remove combinations that do not cover a distinct user-relevant state or responsive behavior, then add targets deliberately as new compatibility needs arise.
