Use a Playwright mobile device descriptor with locale: 'en-IN' and timezoneId: 'Asia/Kolkata', then navigate to the page and call page.screenshot(). These settings emulate browser conditions; they do not guarantee that a site will serve India-specific content or simulate an Indian IP address.
Configure a mobile browser context for India
For an English-language India test, combine a device descriptor from the installed Playwright version with the locale and timezone options. The descriptor supplies device-like browser parameters, including viewport and touch behavior. The example uses iPhone 13, as shown in the Playwright guide; use a descriptor present in your own installation.

Capture a viewport or the whole page

Use Playwright without the test runner
For library-only use, create a browser context from the device descriptor and add the same locale and timezone options. Then open a page, navigate, and capture it:

What the Indian locale and timezone settings change
locale: 'en-IN' affects browser language signals, including navigator.language and the Accept-Language request header, as well as number and date formatting. timezoneId: 'Asia/Kolkata' sets the browser context’s timezone. These are browser emulation settings, not changes to the machine running Node.js. As Playwright notes, “this only affects the browser timezone and locale, not the test runner timezone.” See the emulation documentation.

If the test runner itself needs a timezone, set the TZ environment variable separately. If the scenario depends on location, configure geolocation separately where appropriate; locale and timezone do not supply an India-based IP address or force a site’s India route, inventory, or language. Verify the target site’s behavior for the test case.

Choose the locale to match the people and behavior being tested. en-IN is a reasonable setting for an English-language India scenario, not a universal setting for all Indian users. For another language, choose the suitable language-and-region tag. The official documentation describes the locale option but does not prescribe one locale for every India test.
Choose the right device and screenshot scope
- Device descriptor: Use a registry descriptor to emulate its device parameters. Descriptor names can vary by installed Playwright version, so inspect the local
devicesregistry if a name is unavailable. You can also override viewport-related settings when the test calls for a specific size; the emulation guide documents descriptors and context options. - Viewport capture: Omit
fullPagefor the currently visible screen, useful for checking responsive layout at a particular scroll position. - Full-page capture: Set
fullPage: truewhen the artifact should cover the full scrollable document. A long page may produce a much taller image than the viewport. - Element capture: Call
locator.screenshot()when only a specific component matters. - Visual baselines: Use the same execution environment for baseline creation and later comparisons. Playwright warns that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep the Playwright/browser version and CI image stable when visual differences matter; see the visual comparisons guidance.
Device emulation is for testing responsive layout and browser behavior. It does not mean the page was rendered on a physical phone.

Troubleshoot common problems
- “Cannot read properties” or an undefined device descriptor: The selected name may not exist in the installed version’s registry. Check the available keys in
devicesand use one that is present. - The page still shows non-India content: Locale and timezone alone do not establish IP geolocation or dictate site routing. Check the site’s own locale-selection behavior and configure geolocation separately if the test requires it.
- The screenshot is only the visible screen: The default is a viewport image. Pass
{ fullPage: true }topage.screenshot()for the full scrollable page. - The screenshot cannot be written: Confirm the parent directory exists and that the process can write to it. The example’s
artifactsdirectory must be created before use if it is not already present. - Visual diffs change between runs: Host OS, browser version, rendering settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect output. Pin the execution environment used for both baseline generation and comparison.
- Node.js dates do not use the emulated timezone: The context setting applies to the browser, not the test runner. Set
TZseparately if runner-side timezone behavior is part of the test.
