A successful capture only proves that an image was produced; it does not prove that the glyphs, conjuncts, diacritics, or line wrapping are correct.
Why Indian-language fonts can look wrong in screenshots
A screenshot records what the browser rendered in its particular environment. The result can vary with the host operating system, browser engine and version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance recommends using the same environment that generated a baseline: Playwright visual comparisons.

A page may request a web font that has not loaded, a container may not have an expected font available, or a font may not contain the characters the page needs. The browser can fall back to another font or show missing-glyph boxes. Different Indian languages and scripts do not all have the same font requirements, so diagnose the specific text and target environment rather than assuming one font package fixes every case.
For example, a September 2026 issue report describes Playwright 1.63.0 with Linux WebKit timing out while waiting for fonts during a screenshot of a public page. The reporter says a Playwright 1.60.0 control succeeded in the same described setup, but intermediate versions were not bisected and the responsible change was not identified. This is a version- and environment-specific report, not proof of a general WebKit problem: Playwright issue 38153. A separate 2024 report about an apparent font change in one full-page screenshot assertion was closed as not planned; it does not establish that current Playwright generally changes fonts: Playwright issue 33566.

Set up a reproducible AI-agent browser run
Before debugging a screenshot, record the conditions that can affect rendering. Use the same browser engine, version, operating system or container image, viewport, and relevant font setup when comparing runs. Also record your automation framework version. A screenshot from a different host or browser build may differ even if the page URL and code are unchanged.
- Automation framework and version
- Browser engine and version
- Operating system or container image
- Viewport dimensions and device scale factor, if configured
- Relevant installed fonts and any page-loaded web fonts
- Whether the browser is headless
When choosing an engine or environment, test the actual page and script. Check whether the needed glyphs render, web fonts load, the output matches the intended production environment, repeated captures are reproducible, and the setup is stable with your automation version. The available documentation and issue reports do not establish a universally best engine or a script-by-script compatibility table.

Capture a page with Playwright and check font readiness
Playwright documents saving a viewport screenshot with page.screenshot(), as well as full-page and output options in its Page API. The example below uses Python’s synchronous API. Replace the URL and readiness selector with the page and content your agent is meant to capture.

from pathlib import Path
from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright
url = "https://example.com/page"
ready_selector = "main"
with sync_playwright() as p:
browser = p.chromium.launch(headless=True)
page = browser.new_page(viewport={"width": 1440, "height": 1000})
page.goto(url, wait_until="domcontentloaded")
page.locator(ready_selector).wait_for(state="visible")
# Wait for fonts currently exposed by the page's FontFaceSet.
# This is a diagnostic aid, not proof of complete glyph coverage.
page.evaluate("document.fonts.ready")
font_status = page.evaluate("document.fonts.status")
font_faces = page.evaluate("""() => Array.from(document.fonts, face => ({
family: face.family,
status: face.status,
weight: face.weight,
style: face.style
}))""")
print("Font set status:", font_status)
print("Font faces:", font_faces)
page.screenshot(path="screenshot.png", full_page=True)
browser.close()
The selector wait ties the capture to meaningful page content rather than an arbitrary delay. The font status and face list can help reveal a loading or error state where the browser exposes one, but they cannot certify that every character in the target script is covered. Inspect the resulting image as well.

Use a page-specific condition that reflects the content being captured. Playwright discourages networkidle as a general readiness signal and recommends web assertions instead; network silence does not necessarily mean the meaningful content or fonts are ready. Fixed sleeps are useful for debugging, not as a production readiness strategy: Playwright load-state documentation.
Verify the captured text, not just the file
- Confirm the expected language text is visible in the screenshot and has not been replaced by empty boxes or other missing-glyph symbols.
- Look for unexpected fallback appearance, especially where text changes style within a word or line.
- Check script-specific details such as conjuncts, diacritics, and marks that may be small or easy to miss.
- Compare line wrapping and spacing with the page in the intended browser environment; changed font metrics can shift layout even when characters are present.
- If the image is wrong, inspect the font-face loading and error state, then check the environment’s available fonts and the requested web font. Retest after changing one relevant condition at a time.
These are practical checks, not a universal automated certification method for all Indian scripts. A ready font set is not proof that the correct font contains every needed glyph.

Make visual comparisons repeatable
For visual regression tests, Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing or saving the result: Playwright snapshot assertions. This helps avoid comparing a capture while it is still visually changing. It checks stability, not script-specific glyph coverage. Keep the baseline and new capture on matching browser and host environments so environment changes do not masquerade as page changes.
Troubleshoot common font and capture failures
| Symptom | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Missing boxes or absent characters | Whether the needed font loaded and whether an available font covers the target text. | Inspect the page’s font-face states and the image; check the actual browser environment and target script rather than installing a presumed universal font. |
| Text renders, but looks different or wraps differently | Browser engine/version, host OS or container, headless mode, viewport, and font setup. | Run the baseline and new capture under matching recorded conditions, then compare the rendered text and layout. |
| Capture waits indefinitely or times out at a font step | Automation and browser versions, engine, environment, and font loading/error state. | Reduce the case to a reproducible page and environment, inspect the font state, and test a compatible version or engine. Do not treat bypassing a font wait as evidence that the output is correct. |
| Screenshot succeeds before the target text is ready | Whether the readiness condition describes the actual content rather than only navigation or network activity. | Wait for a page-specific selector or assertion tied to the text, then inspect the image. |
The Playwright 1.63.0 Linux WebKit timeout report is one documented case, but it does not identify a root cause or first affected version. If your setup resembles it, compare exact versions and retain a minimal reproduction rather than generalizing from that report.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with the page verdict and billing status reported in response headers. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. These features do not remove the need to inspect the resulting Indian-language text for correct glyphs.
For example, using cURL:
