Label the link with the official organization name, use meaningful alt text, and check the site’s copyright policy before reproducing its page content. For a small directory, a browser’s manual screenshot is enough; for repeat updates, automate captures with Playwright and review failures by hand.
Choose what the thumbnail should show
A thumbnail is a small preview, not proof that a site is official or current. Decide what it needs to communicate before you capture it:

- Viewport capture: shows the first screen visitors see. This is usually the clearest choice for a directory card because it provides context without becoming overly tall.
- Element capture: isolates a selected area, such as a logo or banner. Use it when that element identifies the organization better than a scaled-down page would.
- Full-page capture: includes content below the fold. It can be useful for a page preview, but a long page is often too busy to read at card size.
Playwright supports viewport, full-page, and locator-based element screenshots. See its screenshot documentation for the capture options.

Make thumbnails consistent and legible
Choose one browser viewport and use the same zoom and capture timing across sites. Then crop or resize each image to the directory’s card format. Playwright can save screenshots as PNG, JPEG, or WebP and provides sizing controls; choose a format and dimensions that keep text and logos legible at the size readers will actually see.
#1 Best Overall
Government websites can render differently across browsers, operating systems, and screen sizes. The Guidelines for Indian Government Websites and Apps (GIGW) calls for testing across these environments and for responsive behavior. If your directory serves readers on mobile and desktop, preview the finished cards at both sizes rather than assuming the thumbnail crop will work everywhere. GIGW resources, including its manual and compliance materials, are available at guidelines.india.gov.in.
Identify the linked organization and make the card accessible
Show the official organization or site name as text beside the thumbnail, and make the destination URL clear through the link itself or an adjacent label. Do not ask readers to infer identity from a tiny logo or image alone. GIGW says official identity should be prominent, ownership information should appear on homepages and important entry pages, and logos and emblems need alternate text. Applying those principles to directory cards, use alt text that identifies the linked site or describes the thumbnail, such as “Homepage preview for the Ministry of …” rather than “image.”

GIGW identifies gov.in and nic.in domains as strong indicators of official status, while also calling for visible ownership information. Treat the domain as a useful cue, not a guarantee: display the organization name and check that the destination still belongs to the expected organization. GIGW’s identity checkpoint says: “Visual Identity elements (logos and emblem) must prominently stand out on the page, in a proper ratio and colour.”
Check permission before reproducing a screenshot
Linking to a public page and republishing an image of its contents are different uses. The Integrated Government Online Directory says its external links are provided for convenience, disclaims control over linked-site availability, and does not guarantee linked sites’ GIGW compliance. Its policy also says reproduction of its own material requires permission and that permission does not extend to third-party copyright. Review the policy of each destination site and seek permission where required, particularly if a capture includes third-party photographs, logos, or other protected material. See the directory’s website policies.

Capture a thumbnail manually
- Open the destination’s public page in a browser and verify the organization and URL.
- Set your chosen viewport and zoom. Use the same settings for each directory entry.
- Wait for the page to finish loading and for any layout shifts or prominent overlays to settle. If the page is blocked, unstable, or unusually sensitive, do not try to bypass its restrictions; flag it for review.
- Capture the visible viewport, or select a concise branded element if that better serves the card.
- Crop or resize to your card dimensions, check legibility at display size, and add the organization name and meaningful alt text in the directory.
- Record the capture date and destination URL with the entry so a later reviewer can identify stale thumbnails.
Automate recurring captures with Playwright
For a large directory or scheduled refresh, browser automation can apply the same viewport and output settings repeatedly. Install Playwright in a Node.js project and install its browser with npm install playwright followed by npx playwright install chromium. Save this as capture.js, replacing the example URL with a public page you are authorized to capture:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const url = 'https://www.india.gov.in/';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
try {
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 60000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'thumbnail.webp', type: 'webp' });
console.log(`Captured ${url}`);
} catch (error) {
console.error(`Capture failed for ${url}:`, error.message);
process.exitCode = 1;
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Run it with node capture.js. The documented basic pattern is to navigate with page.goto(url) and save with page.screenshot({ path: 'thumbnail.png' }). Use fullPage: true when a full-page image is intentional, or capture a specific locator when you have a stable element to isolate:

await page.locator('header').screenshot({ path: 'header.webp', type: 'webp' });
Prefer a compact viewport image for directory cards unless you have a clear reason to show the whole page. Keep automated requests at a respectful rate, handle timeouts and navigation failures, and manually review pages that are blocked or render unusually. Automation is not permission to bypass site restrictions or to capture authenticated or personal information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOr skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. For a thumbnail, save the response as an image; the API also accepts capture options such as output format and viewport. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for available parameters.

Keep the directory accurate over time
Government pages are updated and redesigned, so store the destination URL and capture date with every thumbnail. Periodically revisit links, check for redirects or redesigns, and replace images that no longer represent the destination. GIGW calls for current or reviewed dates on government pages and regular accuracy checks of linked content; applying a review date to your own directory makes the refresh process easier to track.
Troubleshooting captures
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: the page may not have finished rendering or may have timed out. Increase the navigation timeout, review the page in a browser, and retry later rather than treating a failed capture as a valid thumbnail.
- The page never reaches network idle: some sites keep requests open. Try a different documented navigation wait condition and allow a short, consistent delay before capture, then manually verify the result.
- The image is too tall or its text is unreadable: use a viewport or element capture instead of a full-page image, and inspect the crop at the actual card size.
- The page blocks automation: do not evade the restriction. Leave the thumbnail for manual review or omit it.
- The screenshot includes an overlay: some pages show consent dialogs or other overlays. Capture only in a way permitted by the site, and check the final image before publishing.
- The thumbnail appears outdated: compare the stored destination and capture date with the live page, then recapture after confirming the site identity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should a link directory use PNG, JPEG, or WebP thumbnails?
Choose a format supported by your directory’s image pipeline and test the rendered file in the browsers your readers use. Playwright documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output.
Can I use a screenshot just because the destination is publicly accessible?
No. Public access and permission to reproduce page content are separate questions. Check the destination’s policy and rights in any third-party material shown.
