To capture a Hindi web page with legible Devanagari text, wait for the page’s content and fonts to be ready, then call Playwright’s page.screenshot(). Use fullPage: true for the entire scrollable document; without it, Playwright captures the visible viewport. Explicitly choose a font stack with Devanagari coverage when the page is yours, and keep the browser and operating environment consistent when comparing screenshots. Playwright’s page API documents the capture options; its visual comparison guide explains why rendering can vary between environments.
Capture a Hindi page with Playwright
This JavaScript example navigates to a page, waits for a meaningful content landmark, waits for the document’s font-loading set to settle, and saves the full page as a PNG:

const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
});
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com/hindi', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.locator('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'hindi-page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Replace the example URL and, if the page has no visible main element, replace that locator with a selector or app-specific readiness condition that identifies the content you need. The explicit viewport makes the capture dimensions more predictable. The font wait is a cautious workflow step, not a guarantee that every page’s fonts have loaded successfully: verify the rendered result when a particular web font matters.

Playwright can use Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit; this example uses Chromium. Choose the browser that matches the project you are automating, and keep it fixed for repeatable comparisons.
Choose the capture area and output
Playwright’s page screenshot API supports several controls. Select only what the task needs: capture options can change the dimensions, appearance, or contents of the image.
| Need | Option or method | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Visible viewport | page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' }) |
Captures the visible page area by default. |
| Entire scrollable document | fullPage: true |
Captures the page as a tall full-page image. |
| Specific rectangular region | clip: { x, y, width, height } |
Limits the capture to the specified rectangle. |
| CSS-pixel output scale | scale: 'css' |
Uses one output pixel per CSS pixel. |
| Device-pixel output scale | scale: 'device' |
Uses device pixels, which can make output dimensions larger on high-density displays. |
| Image format | type: 'png', 'jpeg', or 'webp' |
Selects the output format. PNG is the default when no type is specified; JPEG does not support transparency. |
| Transparent background | omitBackground: true |
Omits the default background where transparency is supported; not applicable to JPEG. |
| Hide caret | caret: 'hide' |
Hides the text caret; this is the documented default. |
| Hide or restyle page elements | style or test assertion stylePath |
Applies styles during capture or visual assertion. A stylesheet that hides dynamic content changes the image being captured. |

await page.screenshot({
path: 'hindi-region.webp',
type: 'webp',
scale: 'css',
clip: { x: 0, y: 0, width: 900, height: 700 },
});
Use fullPage: true when the whole document matters; use a viewport capture or clip when a very long page would create an unwieldy image. The API’s format and scale settings let you make an intentional trade-off between output dimensions and the needs of the destination. The available sources do not establish comparative file sizes or Hindi rendering quality across formats.
Make Devanagari text render correctly
A screenshot records the browser’s rendered page; it cannot supply missing glyphs or correct a font stack that lacks Devanagari coverage. Hindi uses the Devanagari script, which requires software support for complex text layout. If you control the page, choose a script-capable font and include fallbacks:
body {
font-family: "Noto Sans Devanagari", "Noto Sans", sans-serif;
}
Google Fonts advises listing a fallback web-safe font and a generic family in the CSS font stack. Noto’s usage guidance explains that browsers fall back through listed families when the first face lacks required characters, and recommends a script-specific family such as Noto Sans Devanagari for Hindi. See Google Fonts’ getting-started guidance and Noto’s usage guide.

Google Fonts describes Noto Sans Devanagari UI as a sans-serif family for Indic Devanagari interfaces and lists 922 glyphs and support for 272 characters across six Unicode blocks. Those are family metadata figures, not a guarantee that every Hindi text or shaping case has been tested. See the Noto Sans Devanagari UI family article.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Diagnose boxes, missing marks, or an unexpected typeface
- Check the page’s computed font family and determine which font actually loaded; a CSS declaration alone does not confirm that a web font downloaded or rendered.
- For missing characters or boxes, check that a font with Devanagari coverage is available and that the page has a suitable script-specific fallback.
- If the screenshot’s typeface differs from the interactive page, check font loading and compare captures in the same browser and environment. The available guidance does not establish a single cause for every mismatch.
- Keep font readiness separate from content readiness: wait for the page element you need, then wait for
document.fonts.readywhen downloaded fonts matter.
Wait for content and fonts without relying on sleeps
A fixed delay can be either too short on a slow page or unnecessarily long on a fast one. Prefer a meaningful locator, a documented application-ready signal, or another condition tied to the content you need. The sample uses a visible main landmark; pages with client-side rendering may need a more specific locator.
To wait for fonts from the page context, use:
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
This waits for the document’s font-loading set to settle; it does not prove that the intended font was successfully fetched or selected. Inspect the page and resulting image if the exact typeface is important. Do not assume a bare page.screenshot() universally waits for custom fonts before capture.

Keep screenshots repeatable
Playwright notes that browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. For visual regression work, use the same browser and host environment for the baseline and subsequent captures. See Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.
When a screenshot is a test baseline rather than a one-off file, use Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() assertion. Unlike a bare screenshot call, the visual assertion waits for consecutive screenshots to match before comparing. Keep dynamic content and styling choices deliberate: hiding animations or changing styles can make a comparison more stable, but it also changes what is being compared.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshoot common capture problems
| Symptom | Likely check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Lower page content is missing | The capture is only the viewport. | Set fullPage: true, or use a clip if only a particular region is required. |
| Hindi characters appear as boxes or marks are missing | The active font may not include Devanagari glyphs or suitable shaping support. | Inspect the computed and loaded fonts; use a Devanagari-capable face and a fallback stack if you control the page. |
| The screenshot uses a different font than expected | The web font may not have loaded, or the environments may differ. | Wait for font readiness, verify the actual loaded face, and compare with the same browser and host setup. |
| Visual diffs vary between runs | Browser or host rendering conditions may have changed, or the page contains dynamic content. | Keep the environment consistent and consider toHaveScreenshot() for a visual baseline workflow. |
| The full-page image is too large to use | A long document creates a tall capture. | Capture the viewport or a clip rectangle instead; resize or post-process the image if the destination requires it. |
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-call API can return an image or PDF without setting up a Playwright browser in your project. ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.
For Hindi pages, the screenshot still reflects the font the target page renders; an API does not replace a missing Devanagari font on that page. You can use the API with the same URL and image-output requirements as your workflow:

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I capture only part of a Hindi page?
Use Playwright’s clip option with the rectangle you want, or capture the target element separately with the locator screenshot API.
Does waiting for document.fonts.ready guarantee that Noto Sans Devanagari loaded?
No. It waits for the document’s font-loading set to settle; check the active font and the rendered result to verify which face is being used.
